Lewis and Gelatt Score Goals as Liberty Downs Asheville, 2-0
October 14, 2006
Lynchburg, Va.

Toby Lewis and Mike Gelatt each netted goals as the Liberty Flames downed the UNC Asheville Bulldogs, 2-0, Saturday evening in Big South Conference action at Liberty Soccer Field.

With the win, the Flames even both their conference mark at 3-3 and their overall record at 5-5. The Bulldogs drop to 1-4 in the Big South and 4-9 overall. Liberty has won four-straight matches against UNC Asheville.

The Flames took a 1-0 lead in the contest’s 19th minute. Midfielder Adrian Bumbut (So., Zalau, Romania) burst into the open on the left side of the box and sent a hard shot which goalkeeper Phillip Horner blocked down. Lewis (Jr., Morrison, Colo.) pounced on the rebound and sent a right-footed blast into the right-hand corner of the net to give Liberty the advantage. It was the forward’s third goal of the season.

The goal would be all the Liberty defense needed on the night as the Flames limited the Bulldogs to only two shots on goal.

In the second half, Liberty extended its lead to 2-0 off a corner kick in the 66th minute. Joshua Boateng (So., MF, Accra, Ghana) found an attacking Mike Gelatt (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind.) with a crossing pass, which the defender headed into the top of net for his first collegiate goal.

On the evening, the Flames outshot the Bulldogs, 15-10. Liberty also held the advantage in corner kicks, 8-1.

Kevin Mahan (Sr., Waterford, Mich.) made two saves in the Flames’ net for his second shutout of the season. Horner had four saves in the Bulldog net.

Liberty finishes conference play on Tuesday night when it hosts High Point in a Big South match-up. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m. UNC
