KWC ranks 140th in Division II in rushing offense, 47th in passing offense at 268.7 yards per game but just 102nd in passing efficiency, tied for 133rd in scoring offense and 143rd in total defense. The Panthers are tied for 133rd in turnover margin. The bright spot? KWC is ranked 14th in DII in punt returns.

While clicking through the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers’ website, I was a bit confused about what position Jeff Ward plays. He is still listed as a defensive back on the roster, but then is called a running back in several stories, despite most of his 2013 stats being accumulated as a receiver. However, one fact is very clear- Jeff Ward is the focal point of the NCAA Division II Panthers’ offense.
Ward started his career as a defensive back, getting a little playing time in his freshman year, and then began playing both sides of the ball as a sophomore, in 2011. Last year, Ward began focusing on offense, leading the team in rushing for the second straight year, with 5.6 yards per cary and was also the Panthers’ leading receiver.

Tomorrow the Flames will be taking on a struggling Kentucky Wesleyan squad in a somewhat lackluster matchup. The Panthers are still searching for their first win of the season after an 0-3 start by the hands of Kentucky State, Lindsey Wilson, and Lindenwood-Belleville. They are currently transitioning from the Great Lakes Valley Conference to a newly formed conference that is more regionally convenient. Chances are, this Kentucky Wesleyan squad will be overwhelmed as they try to contend with the Flames in Williams Stadium this weekend.
The Panthers have had extreme problems stopping opposing offenses this season, allowing over 43 points and 500 yards per game. There is no real leadership on the defensive side of the ball, and the Panthers rarely force turnovers. The Flames should have no problems driving up and down the field.
