We finish our look at the offensive side of the ball with the boys that will be tasked with paving the way:
Players Lost:
Mark Tomlin
Toney White
Players Returning:
Malcolm Boyd First Team All-Conference
Mitch Hanson
Stan Herring
Trevor Jenkins (2011 Redshirt)
Grant Jones
Aaron Lundy Second Team All-Conference
Andre Mondor
Greg Ray
DJ Sellman
Hunter Steward
Jay Weatherington
Kevin Widener
Players Incoming:
Aharown Campbell 6-4 300 Lbs Teaneck, N.J. (Hargrave Military Academy)
This is probably the most experienced unit coming back for Liberty this season. 2011 first team all-conference selection Malcolm Boyd is back to anchor the line, Hunter Steward converted from defensive to offensive line (check out Chris Lang's story on Steward in the Lynchburg News and Advance tomorrow) and two other players (Jay Weatherington and Aaron Lundy) who were opening day starters last year are back as well. Grant Jones stepped right in and contributed on the line and here is hoping that freshman Aharown Campbell (who played for Hargrave's post-graduate team last season) can have the same success that Jones did.
With a new quarterback, the play of the line will be even more important to Liberty's offensive success in 2012, under former Western Carolina head coach Dennis Wagner. Boyd and Steward came out of the spring as starters at their positions, look for Lundy, Weatherington, Jones, Hanson (offensive winner of the 2012 Samkon Gado Award in the spring) and Herring to be battling for the remaining three positions on the week 1 line, with Widener, Ray, Sellman, Mondor and the odd men out from the other group battling for the second unit.
UPDATE: Jay Weatherington will be out for the next four weeks with a ruptured eardrum. Aaron Lundy moves to the top of the depth chart at center with Widener moving up to the #2 spot at center
