Stonington field hockey coach Jenna Tucchio said one of Jackie Albert’s key attributes was that she was “a good leader, who tries to bring everybody with her.”
That, by the way, includes freshmen.
With no lower-level feeder program, field hockey is one of the Stonington teams where girls can pick up a stick for the first time and become contributors overnight. If a youngster shows skill and aptitude for the game, Tucchio tends to elevate them quickly — such as she did with Albert.
Coming into high school, the All-Bulletin Player of the Year in field hockey had planned to run cross-country, but followed in her sister’s footsteps and took up field hockey instead. But when she made the varsity team, she didn’t feel welcome.
