GW is coming in with mixed results thus far in the young season with the only win being a 4-0 Exhibition victory over Puh-fieffer. They played UNC-Chapel Hill to a 1-1 tie after 2 OTs, and lost to Winthrop 5-nil.
Before facing us, they are slated to play UNC-Asheville on the 30th.
That's an impressive tie with the number one ranked team in the nation...hopefully LU can match or better that result when they play UNC. Those GW players must be stoked that they played so well with the heels.
Soccer is a sport where you can hang with a team that is ranked way higher than you. Over the years when Bruce Arenas was the coach at UVA, Liberty soccer played them to 1-0 games or 1-1 games. Not trying to take anything away from GW because they should be proud of their performance. I actually believe that we can beat UNC here at Liberty or at least tie. Talking to coach Alder a couple of weeks ago he is really excited about some of his players.
Good to hear that there's been a steady rise in playing quality when playing the high caliber teams...In 97, I went to the game up at UVA and LU hung tough for the first half and then settled for a 4-1 decision. Great strides for the team if they can tie or pull one over on the heels.
I'm beginning to wonder if UNC even played any of their good players when they played Gardner-Webb. Winthrop destroyed G-Webb (in Boiling Springs too), and though I think WU is going to have a very good year, 5-0 scores don't usually happen unless there is just a big mismatch. Even worse for GWU is that they only managed to tie High Point (also at home)...HPU only won one game last year...
I thought about that too, if they played their starters for the first half or something like that, especially after seeing the Winthrop-Gardner Webb score...but kudos to Winthrop for 5 goals, a nice feat and great for the spectators no matter who one is playing.
