Hopefully this will carry weight coming from me: Macs are no more secure than anything else.

Install ALL software updates. Preferably as soon as their available.

Don't install random free software on the Internet.

Use a firewall.

Even then, there are no guarantees with any computer connected to a network.

we run into it almost daily. networks running mostly macs with outdated firewalls and old rules. they will tell me initially they don't need vp because they are a mac school but they want to try other features. once we get in there more times than naught their servers are hacked up and and their icmp traffic is through the roof.

mind you it happens with novell and ad networks a ton too.
