Rob McClellan finished among the top 10 at the WPIAL golf championships his senior season and went on to become a solid collegiate golfer at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.
A 1998 Butler Area High School graduate, McClellan always knew his way around the course. But as he put it, "I wasn't a great player" at the Division I school. "As a sophomore I averaged 76-77, nothing great."
Safe to say that it's likely that of the players who finished better than him at the WPIAL championship his senior year or had a scoring average lower than him in college, there aren't many -- if any -- who will play in a PGA Championship tournament.
A 30-year-old Butler resident, he earned an entry into the 92nd PGA Championship Monday through Aug. 15 at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wis.
