On the morning of Saturday, June 20, 2009, Evan Bryce Schuler, W/M, age 22, was riding in a Danville police vehicle with a Danville police officer. Schuler was a civilian who had been approved two weeks earlier as a participant in the department’s ride along program. After the officer refueled at the Monument Street facility, Schuler jumped from the front passenger seat of the police vehicle without saying a word and ran toward an opossum that was running along the perimeter fence. Schuler kicked the opossum several times, killing it. Schuler was immediately confronted by two of the officers present. He explained that he lives on a farm, that opossums routinely kill his chickens, and that his behavior was “instinctive”. After consultation with supervisors and an investigation, Schuler was charged with Cruelty to Animals (SC 3.1-796.122). He was arrested on June 29, 2009 and released on a summons for an appearance in Danville General District Court.
