I think Karyl Bacon's great game and 13 kills are worth noting.
After spending the first half of the season shifting around our hitters/libero position, I believe Coach Pinder may have finally found the lineup that's going to "bring the rain" in the BS tournament. After moving Nicki from right side to outside (which could have been a debate in itself), we found ourselves scratching our heads about whether Jess or Karyl would find herself swinging at the other outside spot. The season started with Jess hitting outside and newcomer Kelly Haseman playing libero. Jess is perhaps the best all-around female athlete I know, and is one of the best volleyball players LU has ever had. And Kelly has definitely proved that she could play at this level, and has been an incredible asset to the team. But, this meant that Karyl was spending time subbing in to both the outside and the libero spots. This has worked at times, and Karyl definitely provides a spark off the bench, but...
I have made a few observations over the past couple of years of LU volleyball. One of those observations is that, in my opinion, the team is noticeably more intense and enthusiastic with Karyl on the floor. She provides energy and always seems to boost the overall moral of the team. She's always talking and encouraging her teammates. And there's absolutely nothing like seeing "The Baconator" jump 4 feet in the air after a kill. Both Jess and Karyl have the talent to thrive at both the libero and the outside positions, but Jess is one of our most experienced defenders and best passers, and I like to watch her run the defense. And I believe that moving Karyl to the outside position could be the spark that sets the BS on fire. I think that Karyl's 13 kills against Radford on Tuesday is simply a precursor to what we will see in the near future.
I have had the privilege of talking with Karyl on a few occasions off the court, and I am proud to say that Karyl is as solid off the court as she is on. Her love and passion for Christ is evident in the way she lives her life. Thank you, Karyl, for representing Liberty volleyball in the way that you do. You are a joy to watch play, and you are truly a blessing to the Liberty community.
The team is playing well together right now, and I don't know about you, but I'm ready to see Liberty take back what is rightfully theirs: the number one spot in the BS. Let's make some noise this weekend...
