I sold my wife's old car yesterday that I used during college and in cleaning out the trunk I found all of the newspaper clippings I had during the championship season. Now I cut these out and taped them on my room's door throughout the season so they had tape all over them and they've been sitting in a car trunk for 2 years, get over the fact that they are in terrible shape. Also I'm sorry that they're so freaking huge. Acutally they've been uploading for a long time and I figured by the time I finished typing this they'd be done but it's not. So I'll probably resize them if I care to take the time. So coming soon: pictures...

This banner that was in the newspaper for the game was too long to scan as one so this is the best you'll get.

and because I care about you- I edited the banner back together (bit of a hatchet job).

Incidentally- this occurred during the "dark years" when I was outta the loop, so to speak- I had never seen these before. THAT'S what winning looks like- got it.

I tried to repair the other clippings. They couldn't be salvaged. It was nothing too great though.

Good stuff Luconn. That was a great Big South run. We hope to see more days like that in the near future. Medic you should have been there man it was something to watch for sure. I got to call that 1st opening round game when Dees put the team on his back when it looked like Chas So ws gonna upset us. Then I got to watch from press row when Newby from Coastal was playing hurt but went 16-17 from the field. What a job Mantlo did on EJ Gallup though to give us a 15 point victory. It was a much closer game than that as it was a 1 possession game until Woodson blew out Newby's bad knee on a cross over and hit Blair in the corner for 3. The place went bananas! The championship game was so surreal for 2 reasons: 1 because of the noise and the amount of people and the fact that they were all so rowdy and 2 because the game was over after about 5 minutes. HPU never had a chance! For me it was the 2nd greatest day in LU Hoops history! The first, well lets just say the initials ESPN and ETSU were in the building. (Sorry Sly).

Shameless Self-promotion Alert! Beautiful :D

Yeah- hoping those days are here again- though our friends over at WU aren't in a real hurry to be impressed.

SLY spent some time the other day (without success) attempting to convince them that Blair/Brew-pub are gonna make us a much better team. We'll see.

No Doubt Medic. The Big South may get a lot of flack from us on this board and elsewhere but it is tough to win that conference Tournament. What Winthrop has done is amazing to me knowing how tough it is to win 1 let alone 6 of 8! It would be nice to have a run like that in Men's hoops for us. Getting home court advantage in the reg season is the key IMO....As far as the dunk? Big -e- was there, he can tell you about it from 1st hand experience! I think some others may have been there too, HMO was a youngster so he may not remember it but I am sure he was there too with Papa HMO.

I know Spctc, they did. It was deja Vu except the second time Dees didn't take over. He pulled a Kobe and only took 3 shots in the second half (not sure that is an actual stat but just a metaphor). Ironic that it was the last time we saw Dees in a #21 Liberty jersey just like it may be the last time we see Kobe in a #8 Lakers jersey. Yes, Kobe is Transferring to Louisiana Lafayette! You heard it here first. No really I am sure you guys know that he is gonna wear #24 next season for the Lakers. Kobe not Dees.

I often wonder what this season would have been like with Dees. Probably not that much better. But maybe a few more conference wins.

I subscribe to the theory that they would have been better with Dees. I think he would have given them a go to person in the paint when they needed a bucket. That is what they missed a lot and he would have given them that. Plus he would have taken a lot of attention from LB by the oppossing defense. His defensive lapses would have been reduced since he was a Jr. That is all my opinion but I am a big Dees fan and I know David pretty well so I may be biased.

LUCONN, you bring back alot of memories. I still have many of those pictures from the paper as I saved them as well. I believe we will see another championship in the near future.

Dees would have certainly helped, I liked David alot and it was a shame to see him leave but, I will never forget that Chuck South game from 05 amazing, stunned would be the proper word to use in describing the last 10 mins of that game...But I like what Coach is doing with this team, he certainly is doing everything in his power to avoid another season like last year. And I firmly believe that he will turn this thing around

Watching that LU/HPU game in 2004 was one of the most impressive performances I've ever seen by any team in any sport...You guys just absolutely dominated every part of that game for the whole 40 minutes. Going into that game, I knew Larry Blair was good, but he was unbelievable that night.

As for Dees..I'm not sure what his presence would've done for you guys this year...it's really hard to tell, though it wouldn't have really helped the Flames' weaknesses in the paint. But I missed watching him play...he was one of the smoothest players I've seen in the 10 years I've been watching Big South basketball...

WEF so you must remember Greg Lewis then. He was a beast. I went to the game up in College Park MD, when Winthrop took them to OT and he was unstoppable that night. The Big South has had some great players over the past 18 years I have watched but I would say he was one of the best. Dees kind of played like him but was not as aggressive, strong or athletic. Actually Dees was very athletic but didn't really play like a big leaper like Lewis did...That March in 2004 was special for sure. A performance that gets overlooked in all the excitement was Jason Sarchett's 14 points and 14 rebounds and I don't think he missed a field goal. LB was sensational for a Freshman. 29 points and didn't get the MVP. I thought if he didn't get it G-Mart would. I remember talking about it at press row. At least Gathings did the right thing and gave LB the trophy but of course the Big South has yet to step up and acknowledge it.

They acknowledge that he got a sportsmanship award because of it. But since they don't acknowledge it in the first place, I guess they don't know why he got the sportsmanship award. They should hire a Big South detective.

So you were at that Maryland game Scar? Man, I remember listening to that one on the radio and it killed me that WU wasn't able to pull that one out. I'm from Maryland and the Terps are my #2 team, but I was 100% going for the Eagles in that matchup. Lewis missed two big FTs late that could've won it for WU. Luckily WU was able to bounce back a few weeks later and take out a pretty good Missouri team, which was the first real 'big name' win under the Marshall era (or any era for Winthrop).

That championship game was something special. I was in the student section on the front row directly behind the press box. Because of so many people packed down front, there were many times where I was short on oxygen. It was simply amazing.

I remember how great Dees played the first two games. If it weren't for LB's special play in the championship game everyone would have been talking about his performance instead. I'm still sorry he is not here.

I was riding up to Powhatan VA with some friends of mine. We were in an indoor drumline competition and we listened on the radio as far as WRVL's signal could reach. I had my mom tape the game back home so I could watch it in my dorm after we got back...man how that brings back memories...

I remember that year I always got to the game an hour and 15 minutes before the game started, and I was always the first student there. For the championship game, I got there at 8:30 (3hours before the gates were opened) and there were already a handful of students there! That was great.

JC you are a true fan for sure my man! What do you do for 3 hours? I had free food and access to the players and coaches and I still didn't get there til an hour before. All that pre-game stuff makes me tired. I just want to get the game going when I get there. That enthusiasm you speak of though needs to return. We don't have to be Duke for there to be a great crowd and pride for Liberty hoops. I don't have the marketing answer (if I did I would be part owner of Prototype with Josh Op and the boys) but there has to be a way to galvanize this student body and the community. I think the efforts are definitely being made by SJ, AD Barber, Proto and others which will pay off soon.
