Virginia Beach council hearing sports arena pitch

The City Council listened to a pitch to build an 18,500-seat sports arena near the Oceanfront this afternoon, and a development official called the proposal an opportunity of a lifetime. Before it was over, though, one councilman was questioning the potential public cost.

Officials for Comcast-Spectacor, the company that wants to build the arena along with Live Nation, have said they would bring a professional sports team to Virginia Beach if the deal goes through.

The arena would host 200 events a year, with 1.4 million attendees, and would be up to 800,000 square feet, according to an announcement from the city’s development authority.

Sounds to me like itll host a lot of other events as well like concerts, expositions and other things, because at first glance, 200 sounded a bit far fetched to me as well.

It would be the only option of its size within several hundred miles. There are plenty of travelling shows, concerts, local college tournaments, high school tournaments, etc. that could easily fill up another 150-160 dates a year.

LiveNation is HUGE. They promote all the big concert series and shows. Take a look at where bands play and they will almost all be LiveNation venues. At least the one I've been to, Rush,Iron Maiden, U2 KISS Mötley Crüe Chicago, Def Leppard, StyxPoison. You know, all the gospel groups

Virginia Beach city council meeting today confirms what was already obvious: Nothing in place for arena, no real chance to get the Kings.
Pretty sure I said not happening.

Suffice it to say, it appears pretty obvious that Inside Business was getting desperate for viewers to throw out such a story that appears to have had close to zero basis in fact.

The sales pitch to the City Council was simple: Hampton Roads is ripe for a large arena to host a major league basketball or hockey team and other events, which would bring jobs, sports fans and concerts.

But details on who would pay for the estimated $350 million building or what team would play there were not part of Tuesday’s presentation.

A group of companies, led by Comcast-Spectacor – owner of NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers and former owner of the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers – are in talks with the city to build an 18,500-seat arena next to the Virginia Beach Convention Center near the Oceanfront.

Sources have said the NBA’s Sacramento Kings are the target tenant. Comcast-Spectacor officials said Tuesday they haven’t talked to Kings representatives about moving here. The family that owns the Kings has declined to comment.
I would take that with a bit more credence than someone who isnt even from here OR Tidewater posting something that they happened to see on Twitter

THe dude is from the NBA. The NBA would know more about what the Kings want to do than HamptonRoads.com. We've already seen what kind of lies VA Beach media wants to perpetuate.

Kings to VA Beach has popped up again...
Virginia Beach reportedly reaches deal with Comcast, Kings; may ask for $150 million from statehouse

Virginia Beach mayor Will Sessoms has reached a deal with Comcast-Spectacor and apparently the Maloofs to build a city-owned arena in that fair burg, with the cable company as the operator and the Kings as the primary tenant. Next Tuesday, Rader reports, Sessoms will ask the Virginia Beach City Council to approve a request to the State of Virginia for $150 million to help build the arena and finance the team's relocation.
