I don't think anyone disagrees with you on that one coach forbidden...we are not deep at the QB position. We essentially have Masha, two freshmen, the scout team QB and a WR who can play QB if absolutely necessary (and if we get to that point something is very VERY wrong). Now, none of this throwing he is doing is in an official practice setting, but if he is the same way when training camp starts, you have to think that theyll pocket his redshirt.

I get what you're saying, but from a practical standpoint, if it's just a question of being behind Masha (whether he feels it is justified or not) transferring anywhere in D1 after this year would mean sitting a year, and would ultimately not get him on the field any sooner than sticking around Here's hoping TG will find a way to utilize everyone's skills

If he leaves or tries to or wants to or whatever you want to call it, my "gut" says they stick it to him and wont make it easy, by just letting him go. You know come up with any and every possible scenario to make It absolutely dang near impossible to move, and on top to boot he has to sit. I just think that this kid will possible take over by mid season, just because he is that good. You hate to have a platoon system, but from mop up duty to some live action if he impresses he takes over, just that simple. Unfortunately, Masha has to move positions, because if were honest here, any shot at next level wont be under center. May as well get him as comfortable and acclimated as possible, and it (IMO) actually puts more weapons on the field IF the QB is what we think he is.

If this kid is as good as advertised and IF HCTG is coaching for his job I'd start the kid in the 2nd half of the SMU game. Takes a lot of pressure off of him And it gives TG some ammo at the end of the season if LU doesn't make the playoffs to say 'Hey, look at this Freshman I am playing. We can do things'. If HCTG is secure in his job and this kid is about equal to Masha than let Masha play and this guy hold a clip board and learn

I think that we will get our answer the first couple weeks of practice. If he clearly outplays Masha, you may see him start and Masha moved to WR ahead of the VT game. If they are equal or he is only slightly ahead, expect Gill to go with the experience of Masha but keep Calvert at the ready and give him plenty of looks.

That said, I don't see Gill as the vengeful, "stick it to you" type who will put a ton of unnecessary restrictions should someone make their intentions to transfer known

His RS has him him for four more years, is there ANY guarantee that HCTG will be here. If this kid is good enough then like i said awhile back, Masha can't afford to get hurt, PERIOD. You could have a Drew Bledsoe/Tom Brady situation, and Masha gets moved to another position. Wins = job security, not saving for the future.

Gill actually has more security than you realize. For one, JB has typically been quick to hire and slow to fire. If you look at LU's recent job history, Gill likely has at least two more seasons left. Additionally, and I don't know this for certain, but JB has always come across as the type of AD that can be convinced with a plan. If you have a plan and can clearly paint a picture of how successful your program will be in the next 2-4 seasons, he will keep you around. Look at the timing of Dale Layer's firing. He should have been fired about two seasons prior but he had several players coming back. He was fired during a year in which there was a lot of uncertainty about the program's future. That's when JB seems to get uncomfortable.

You don't risk a program's future based on perceived job security.

As to the QB situation, one of the two freshmen will be redshirted that much is pretty certain. The "loser" between the two will have to ask themselves, whether or not it will be worth either sitting out a year, dropping down a level or transferring to junior college

That would be interesting. With Masha's speed and hopeful development of his pass game; adding Calvert to mix it up could make for a long Saturday for opponents. Calvert's footage shows he can really work in and out of the pocket and reads the field well. I just have not seen anything demonstrating his speed, yet. Nevertheless, if he shows up like it appears he will (and I recall his decision being based in part on his chance to compete for starting job) then I'm not sure it would be prudent to redshirt him. I'm no coach or AD, but IMHO...the last thing I would want to hear from my HC after a losing or disappointing season is that "our star quarterback was redshirted".

to much thinking is going into this, HCTG has been at this for awhile now, and he himself knows the QB spot. Coming in Buck was told he would have chance to compete, that means we both get same play calls and whomever makes better decisions should win the job. If he loses and decides to transfer I would guess it was because he was "mislead" about things moreso than being beat out. Masha wins Masha plays, Masha loses Masha then gets moved to another spot and doubles as the backup as it would be hard to have to sit for another year.

Once again, let me remind you that the season that would be affected if we redshirt Calvert is 2020 If we can't bring in more talent to stabilize the position between now and then, we need a new staff for sure The idea that we would essentially sacrifice this year by having no capable backup QB in order to have Buck around 4 years from now is mind boggling to me

thats a shirt that wont be used, and that's with no "inside" information. bottom line is we have NO QB's behind Masha and as was pointed out Yearick threw like 3/4 passes in the spring game, I doubt with that whole month or so to get things installed if things were going well they would have let him throw just a tad bit more. This is going to be a 2 man race between Masha and Buck, so lets just hang on tight and enjoy the ride.
