To keep the fan enthusiam chugging along, it would seem that at least a game over .500 would be necessary this year.

A game over 500 would be the bare minimum for fan enthusiasm. If LU was in the A-10 or the Southern and played an 8 or 9 game conference schedule then a 5-6 or 6-5 record would generate some enthusiam. With the schedule LU has this year 7-4 would be necessary.

I think that you could see one of the two come 08... Like Chris mentioned above we still have returns to a few teams...I think year 3 of the Rocco era is when you will see the schedule be pretty beefed up, and that will be the Senior seasons of Brock, Zach and Rashad....

Lehigh, Youngstown State and Western Carolina will all be on the road in '08 ... maybe JMU, too. William & Mary at home that year, Elon too, I think. That schedule may be pretty much done.

Check this out, that will be an interesting match-up with Youngstown State, considering this news:
August 4, 2006
Football: Penguins Set to Visit Ohio State in 2007, 2008
Youngstown State University and The Ohio State University have entered into a two-year agreement to play in the 2007 and 2008 football seasons at Ohio Stadium, both athletic departments announced on Friday (August 4). The Penguins open both seasons at “The Horseshoe” on Sept. 1, 2007 and August 30, 2008.

Youngstown State Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Ron Strollo said that playing the top-ranked Buckeyes gives the athletics department, the entire university and community great national exposure.
“The opportunity to play a tradition-rich program like Ohio State in consecutive years benefits our student-athletes, our university, our fan-base and the entire Mahoning Valley,” Strollo said. “I know everyone in our football family appreciates this chance to play one of the most storied college football programs in the nation.”
The matchup also offers the intrigue of pitting former YSU coach and current Buckeye coach Jim Tressel against his old team. Tressel amassed a 15-year record of 135-57-2 at Youngstown State from 1986-2000.
Youngstown State has played a Division I-A foe 39 times since moving to the Division I-AA ranks in 1981. YSU is 19-19-1 all-time against I-A schools and played its first-ever game against a member of the Big East Conference, Pittsburgh, this past season.
The Penguins are coming off an 8-3 campaign in which it was 5-2 in the Gateway Football Conference tying playoff finalist Northern Iowa and playoff quarterfinalist Southern Illinois for the league title. The only other loss in 2005 was at Pitt.
Ohio State, who was voted preseason No. 1 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, is coming off a 10-2 season and a 34-20 Fiesta Bowl victory over Notre Dame. The Buckeyes return nearly all of their starters on offense, including Heisman Trophy candidates Troy Smith and Ted Ginn, Jr.
The remainder of the 2007 and 2008 Youngstown State football schedules will be released at a later date.

Also, more I-AA teams playing stiff competition in the next couple of years:
Virginia Cavaliers Headline Spider Football Future Division I-A Opponents

Spiders scheduled to take on ACC and SEC opponents through the 2012 season, including two tilts with in-state foe Virginia.

July 27, 2006

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond Football squad is slated to take on teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southeastern Conference in each of the next six seasons. Virginia headlines a list which includes Duke and Vanderbilt as future Division I-A opponents on the Spiders' schedule through the 2012 season.

"We are excited about the challenge of facing teams from the ACC and SEC," head coach Dave Clawson said. "These are attractive games for our players, Spider fans and future recruits."

Two of the most awaited Division I-A match-ups on the Spiders' future schedule are with Virginia in the 2008 and 2010 seasons. Richmond has faced the Cavaliers 28 times in its 123-year history with the most recent meeting dating back to Sept. 1, 2001, when it lost 17-16 in Charlottesville, Va.

Next season the Spiders return to Nashville, Tenn., to face the Commodores of Vanderbilt. In 2005, Richmond fell, 37-13, in Vanderbilt Stadium to a then-undefeated Vandy squad. Richmond is also slated to make a trip to Vanderbilt in 2012.

Richmond will open its 2006 schedule with a game at ACC-foe Duke, Sept. 2, at 6 p.m. Return trips to Duke are also on the schedule for 2009 and 2011. The 2006 matchup between the Spiders and Blue Devils will be the 11th in Richmond's 123-year history.

RICHMOND SPIDERS' FUTURE DIVISION I-A OPPONENTS
2006 - Duke
2007 - Vanderbilt
2008 - Virginia
2009 - Duke
2010 - Virginia
2011 - Duke
2012 - Vanderbilt

Kudos to Richmond. As far as I-As go, that's probably the easiest I-A schedule this side of the Sun Belt. Duke was only marginally better than VMI last year and Vandy will still have not recovered from losing Cutler. By '08, hopefully UVa will have recovered from the slide they're about to go into but we'll see.

I LOVE HOW EVERYONE PREDICTS HOW UVA IS JUST GOING IN THE TANK THIS YEAR. when the hoos are preidcted to fail, they usually step up. but definite kudos to richmond on scheduling up.

Smoothie, I have followed this team very closely the last 3 years and interview players on a regular basis and I just don't see them having a great year this year... I really don't even hate them like I used too... From a coverage stand point I would like to see them do well, makes a better year.... But they have lost SO much on both sides of the ball, I think if they get 6 wins and go to a bowl game that it will have been a good year for them this year, Unproven QB in Olsen really makes it tuff in my opinion...

Did this resolution over at App State take effect back in '01? If it did, is it still their party line? If LU moves to Div 1 Bowl Subdivision (or whatever the NCAA decided to call it now), could LU find itself facing similar actions by schools?

From http://www.sga.appstate.edu/index.php?m ... 43:149:231

V. Unfinished Business

Heather Robertson addressed the Student Senate concerning the rules report on SB 035-003. In the 2nd sentence strike does not, add an "s" to need. In the question and answer section add, a comma and "or should that be changed"

Mark J. Miller motioned to add "remarks" between the word "closing" and "stating" in the closing comments.

Ian Mance and Paul Funderburk came forward to give opening remarks on their legislation SB 035-003.

Stephen Barker asked: Do you see this financially affecting Appalachian in a negative way?
Ian: No Appalachian will have time to find another team that will fill Liberty's place-give

Brian Stevens: What is the university thinking of doing on this issue right now?
Ian: I don't know that is why we are writing this legislation, they want Student Government's opinion.

William Foster:-Did you poll any Liberty students to see if they agree with Jerry Falwell?
Paul Funderburk: We were told by Roachel Laney and Dr. Blimling not to contact Liberty since we do still have a contract with Liberty and they may be able to sue.

Chung Wei Sun- If we don't extend the contract, do you know if the new team's financial contract will be the same?
Ian: I Imaging it will be equitable contract.

Graham Morris: Do you think you properly assessed all student needs in writing this legislation?
Ian: Yes, everyone has had an opportunity to contact their constituencies and everyone's opinion.

Michael Putnam: Why didn't you poll the Athletic Students Association?
Ian: We didn't poll any specific students, club soccer is represented and their representative is voting no for the legislation. The Athletic Student Association is represented just like any other club or organization.

Jennifer Brannock: Do you think minority opinions were taken into consideration?
Ian: We have gotten opinions from BGLAAD and other minority organizations.

Followup for Jennifer Brannock: How were those who did not agree with the bill get represented?
Ian: You have to rely on the senators to convey the way their constituencies felt. Some residence halls will have the vote split like in Appalachian Heights. Everyone had an opportunity to have his or her voice heard.

Michael Putnam: Why shouldn't extreme conservative views be heard and accepted at Appalachian?
Ian: They are we are, and we are all allowed to speak our minds. The conservative groups have been able to speak their views just as much as any other group on campus.

Follow up from Michael Putnam: Would you be just as compassionate about if liberal views were being protested against by a conservative group, and will this open the door for this to
happen every time conservative views are expressed by someone Appalachian is affiliated with?
Ian: This is not going to happen every week, but we feel like the views expressed by Reverend Falwell should not be affiliated with Appalachian.

Katherine Allen: Do you have any quotes from Liberty and not just Jerry Falwell?
Ian: All the quotes on the legislation with the exception of a couple.

Walt Elder addressed a question to Senator Michael Putnam:-what is a radical conservative and what does one believe?
Michael: I don't have a complete definition

William Foster: How are we supposed to effect Liberty to make them more accepting by cutting ties?
Ian: We are not trying to change Liberty. They can say and do whatever they want. We are just here to protect the students of Appalachian.

Stephen Barker: Do you feel that this legislation opens the door for unfair discrimination?
Ian: No, we just don't want to affiliate with intolerance.

Derrick Holder: DO we have any prospective teams to replace Liberty?
Ian: Yes that information is in the legislation.

David Thadani: Does this have legislation have ASU Athletics best idea in mind?
Ian: They have been represented equally so if they had a concern they had time for their concern to be heard.

Graham Morris- Do you believe that ASU being financially involved with Liberty makes us diverse?
Ian: No, I think its counterproductive in our quest for diversity.

Mark J. Miller-Can we look into cut ties with all private universities?
Ian: You can
Mark J follow up-Can we add in legislation to pick up a public university?
Ian: That would be a separate piece of legislation.

Dustin Bayard motioned to accept SB035-003.

Amendments- Under Purpose, remove the word "terminate" and add "not renew".

On AIDS quote- Revise to say "It is a commonly accepted fact that"

On the third page, revise to say, "a men's basketball game, man's and women's tennis matches, and a tentatively located football game."

Heather Robertson moved to accept the amendments.
There was some dissention.

Debate 1st round positive
Heather Robertson: All amendments were clear. They were discussed in the rules committee and they have been available for questions.

1st Round Negative
Brain Stevens: move to end debate on amendments

The amendments were accepted.

Call for the previous question.
There was some dissention heard.

Debate began

1st Round positive
Dustin Bayard: This legislation should be passed because the Appalachian Mission Statement upholds and supports specific people that Jerry Falwell and Liberty University personally attack. We are funding our hindrance to promote diversity.

1st Round Negative
Brian Stevens: The comments were made on the 700 Club, and I yield the floor to Greg Hip.
Greg Hip: I am a concerned Student Athlete everyone is entitled to their own opinion and athletes?
One-minute time limit was then called on Mr. Hip.

2nd round positive
Heather Robertson: We must be accepting of everyone's views, and they have all been heard and taken into consideration.

2nd round negative
Alicia Walker: The disclaimer on Liberty's webpage explains that they except no responsibility for unaffiliated web pages.

3rd round positive
Ian Mance: All quotes in the legislation are from Liberty's webpage. They were prepared by Liberty's Administrators.

3rd round negative
Alicia Walker: Jerry Falwells comments are not on the webpage there is a link to his comments. We should accept everyone's views even though they may not be good or we may not agree.

4th round positive
Ian Mance we are not intolerant of Liberty's website, we just don't want our money to go to people who attack our students.

4th round negative
Brian Stevens: The comments found on Liberty were links but not directly connected to Liberty's Homepage.

Call for previous question

Roll call vote was held
SB 035-003 with a vote 14 abstentions, 41 yes, and 17 no votes

It was App State's SGA (and subsequently Faculty Senate) voting on a resolution to sever athletic ties (namely football) with Liberty because of the revenue that would benefit LU from the arrangement. Since this is a thread on "what teams [one] would like to see on the schedule in the future" and several on here have mentioned wanting to see App State on the schedule, and noting that they are also the defending National Champions, if they actually instituted severing ties with LU, then that would make it kind of difficult to play them. Apparently, they didn't want to be affiliated with LU in anyway; this is what they cited as their reasoning: (source, http://www.sga.appstate.edu/index.php?m ... AGE_id=155
Subject: Athletic Relationship with Liberty University

Purpose: To support any administrative decision to not renew sporting contracts with Liberty
University

"Liberty University's Chancellor, Jerry Falwell, has made numerous public statements of an intolerant nature over the past decade. In the wake of the World Trade Center and Pentagon tragedy, Reverend Falwell accused a variety of minority groups and civil rights organizations for helping the attack happen. Liberty University's website also features a variety of intolerant official statements issued by the University. Appalachian State University has sports contracts with Liberty University, and the financial benefits of these contracts support Liberty University."

"...Appalachian State University has traditionally arranged to play Liberty University in football on a semi-regular basis for the past 14 years. There are also tennis and basketball contracts between the Universities."

"...Terminating the basketball and tennis contracts would not lose Appalachian State any money; however, termination of the football contract would result in a forfeiture fee of an undisclosed amount. Laney would prefer not renewing the Liberty contract as opposed to terminating it. Should Appalachian State University not renew its sporting contracts with Liberty University, it would not have difficulty finding other schools to take Liberty's place, according to Laney and the Faculty Athletic Representative, Allen Hauser. Laney has named both James Madison University and Eastern Kentucky Univetsity as possible replacements.

As is the case with most college football contracts, both schools benefit financially. The terms of the contract between Appalachian State University and Liberty University are confidential, but Hauser confirmed that Liberty does profit from the arrangement. "
So, I was just curious if there was a precedent in D1BS where publics (and other high profile private institutions) denied contracts to schools that they didn't agree with, and if this type of discrimination is a hurdle that LU will encounter when trying to schedule stiffer competition in the future in order to move up in the world of major college football? That's all, just wondering if there was a history of schools refusing to play another because of ideological differences. [/quote]

I'm sure that type of discrimination exists but I sincerely dopubt any school would admit to it.

I can tell you that the University of Texas AD has publicly stated he won't allow any of the UT mens athletic programs to schedule games with the University of Houston as long as he is in charge. He was ticked at the way UH was operating in regards to scheduling football games. So he pulled the money and is schedule crosstown rival Rice every year. As a result, the millions of dollars that used to be in the UH athletic budget from UT event revenues are now over in the Owls coffers.

I think boycotts b/c of what our chancellor says is ridiculous...lets keep athletics about athletics and leave the political views out. But to each school their own, I guess...

Anyway, here are some teams I'd like to see:
U of Richmond
JMU
Hampton
ODU

IA:
UNC
Duke
NC State
Maryland
Vanderbilt
Virginia
