Because your school doesn't have a football program :I chortle audibly.:
I can respect that, but I grew up as a Richmond football fan and still live right beside campus. I'm still a bit of a casual fan and will certainly take my kids to games someday. I just kind of respect, in terms of football, the Richmonds or William & Marys of the world. They are content with where they are at and are striving for success at that level.

What game or draw would be more exciting for you and the fanbase as a whole in Williams Stadium? Delaware vs Liberty or New Mexico State vs Liberty? I just don't see the end game and, like I said, its just chasing a rainbow and an outdated mission from your founder. When my sister was at Liberty I went to see the football games against VMI, Coastal, JMU, and others. It was always a good atmosphere and an atmosphere I don't really see replicated with Louisiana Monroe coming to town, especially after you further expand your stadium.

Like I said I'm the exception, not the rule. No need for poking, I just thought some here would be interested here and couldn't resist some shameless self promotion.

You are big and you are famous in the core niche that you're trying to attract. I don't get how the Sun Belt is a stepping stone to being "big and famous" athletically? If you think the Sun Belt is a stepping stone to the ACC/B1G/PAC12/SEC then sure, its going to make you big and famous. But I'm having trouble thinking of any Sun Belt champions or schools for that matter who are now big and famous. North Texas or Troy hasn't exactly garnered the attention of the BCS.

A Georgia Southern fan posted this on another board. I can't say that he's wrong...
Liberty is somewhat of a loner, a kind of loner like Richie rich with no friends but lots of money and facilities.
We went to the door with a well-prepared 3 course meal and dessert... JMU came through the backdoor with 2 boxes of Tacos... The moral of the story is: everyone loves Tacos!

I'm sorry. I have to laugh to keep from Crybaby

Jerry's vision was to be the Evangelical answer to Notre Dame and BYU, and part of that vision included whipping Notre Dame in South Bend in football.

No, but Jerry's casket gets lowered back into the grave. He said he'd be there on the 50 yard line, even if he was in a casket.

It's about a pursuit of excellence at all levels and facets of the university RVA. By doing this, we are able to reach more people and increase our sphere of influence in this world. As you have pointed out, we do have a good amount of exposure in our current niche, but what you fail to realize is that LU really is a university that is national in make-up and scope. Why should we want to remain in an FCS conference that only exposes our athletic teams, and the university to a region? Sure, in a lot of ways, LU's residential operations are similar in make-up to a lot of those in the Big South, CAA, SoCon, etc. But, even in our residential base - only about 30% are from the state of VA, and I don't think that necessarily factors in the online component.

Suffice it to say, our goal has always been to pursue the highest level of athletics. I didn't know Jerry Sr., but it seems to me that he realized the power of collegiate athletics when it comes to PR and brand enhancement. At this juncture, there really isn't an 'Evangelical' university that fits this bill. LU aims to capture that niche, and in doing so we hope that the best of all high school Christian athletes choose to attend LU over other major public universities.

Of course! But you first have to rap the song "Big Papa" in Spanish like the Taco Bell commercial in order to get Cool Ranch flavor. :P

With regards to big and famous in the niche...no. There are thousands upon thousands of Christians in this country who haven't a clue about Liberty or have ever heard of us...particularly in the 15-18 demographic. NOTHING can do more to change that except winning big games in football/men's basketball, although I am still waiting for a superbowl commercial which could do more perhaps. And so we press on!!

Now time for the vision police and a history lesson. The goal is to win a national championship in FBS football...end of story. If you aren't on board with this or cannot understand it...don't bother to continue reading. No ifs ands or buts about it...well maybe an "and"... as in football AND basketball national championships...AND every other sport. The goal is number one. The goal is Stanford, who has the best overall athletic department in the country. The goal is to beat Alabama or whoever else will be good by the time we're ready.

2150? Sure. If that is how long it takes, let it be known that we laid the groundwork for a national championship in football in 2150 by moving to FBS and taking our lumps or playing in the #inserttrendybowlsponsorshipnamehere bowl now, in 2013.

Now for you're history lesson - Let me share with you the story of a one, Leroy Buffington. Leroyyyyyy was an architect in the late 1800's and was one of the early designers of what we now know as the modern skyscraper. At the time he proposed a 28 story structure and was mocked by the press because of it. It was impossible, it was insane they said. This was circa 1890.

Now fast forward some 120 years to 2013. We have the Burj Khalifa at 2,722 feet in Dubai, and on its way up right now in Saudi Arabia is the Kingdom Tower, which is rumored to be over 3,000 feet tall when completed. So tell me again about vision. Tell me about 2150. Tell me about wining national championships in football. We're only 42 years old my friend, and we imagine where we'll be in 2150 and it will be so.

Will / Way
Anything / Through Him

The cliches get old but they're true. Let it be known throughout the Google archival history that way back in 2013 good old logic said Liberty will be winning national championships of all kinds in many different sports/activities...and really it will be sooner than that.

A word of caution my friend - history never remembers the names of the doubters... Tell me the name off the top of your head of one of the doctors that told Roger Bannister a sub 4:00 mile was impossible and that he would die trying. But you know the name Roger Bannister. Can you name more Patriots or Tories? Super Bowl winners or losers? What was the name of the play Babe Ruth was sold to the Yankees to finance? The list goes on and on.

You're never too old to be captivated by vision Steven, it is what keeps men young and with a hop in their step! Men do not retire...they retool. A man starts to die the minute he retires and has no vision to live for! We say this tongue in cheek now, my guess is that advances in neuroscience in the next 100 years will prove it to be true. Without purpose, the brain dies, the body dies. FCS is not our vision, dream, goal, purpose. We were meant to live for so much more. Hear Hear!!

So the change in construction materials and techniques didn't help facilitate the building of sky scrapers? Did differing training techniques help Roger? See a trend?

ok that was a little over dramatic but I guess the general premise is true.

Ha! is this even considered a choice? Would I rather qualify, but come in last in the olympics, or would I rather win a gold in the special olympics?

Sure, just the same way that LUOnline enabled a move to FBS for Liberty.

The one thing that remained constant Haize is/was the vision. Buffington didn't have the technology to go 28 stories in 1890, but he knew from his engineering it was theoretically possible, and thus he dreamed.

Jerry Falwell Sr. didn't have the resources to go FBS or beat Notre Dame when he said it...The internet had not even been "invented" yet....but he knew it would happen some day, just didn't know when or how. No different than Buffington calling for 28 stories in 1890 and being laughed at. He knew he wouldn't be the one to build 28 stories, but he paved the way for those that would.

That's called Faith Haize, of which ye have little!!

The beatings from logic will continue until the morale improves.

We have been planning a move 1A/FBS for a long time. You missed the entire point. In order for their 'visions' to be fulfilled different approaches than the one they were currently taking needed to be employed.
Funny, you never mention those people who had visions that were incredibly off base. Lead to Gold. Even Martin Luther got caught up in that. All that glitters is not gold.
