you beat me to it.
Lynchburg, VA. - Liberty University Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. said Liberty plans to start construction on a new baseball stadium by mid-Fall.

The new stadium will be built next to the current David's Place building on campus which is now a big dirt field between the football and soccer field.

It will seat 2,500 to 3,000 fans, which is much more than the current stadium.

The Flames will also move softball to the current baseball stadium area.

The new baseball stadium will be ready for the 2013 season

PS: eat it, SLY

OK, I guess Dennis reported it at 6. If he didn't, then he missed his chance to break the story first.
I told the AD a few months ago to go ahead and start planning for an overhaul of Worthington Stadium and for a new softball stadium. The plans were drawn and looked very nice but the work had to be done between baseball seasons. At the same time, we were in the process of building 600 more parking spaces between Green Hall and Williams Stadium so that Liberty's employees would no longer have to park on TRBC property (TRBC owns all the parking lots in front of Green Hall north of Cafe North). In discussions with Charles Spence, Maggie Cossman (our in-house engineer) and Neal Askew one day, it hit me that the site next to David's Place would be the perfect spot for a new baseball stadium. By building it there, we can start construction at the end of football season and work through baseball season. Maggie started sketching it in and it fit--barely. The employee parking spaces that would have been built there will instead be built on the field next to LaHaye Ice Center where LCA's football team practices and that field will be replaced on the golf driving range. EDIT: NOTE THAT OVER 300 OF THE 600 NEW SPACES WILL BE COMPLETED BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS. (LU is building a new driving range at the end of CMR on Sunnymeade.) So, the decision was made the day before construction was to begin on that part of the new parking lot. We have three architectural firms bidding for the design work. The stadium will seat about 3000. David's Place will likely be renovated to create a baseball operations center. Worthington Stadium will become our new softball stadium with some renovations there as well. The soccer, football and baseball stadiums will share many of the same parking lots and other amenities such as concessions and restrooms if the designers can make that work. I wasn't crazy about the idea of such a huge asphalt lot between Williams and the law school anyhow. I don't think I'm leaving out any details but it appears the cost of this new stadium won't be much more than what it would have cost to bring Worthington up to FBS-school standards. Sorry for breaking the rules, Sly, but I felt bad for creating so much suspense, then leaving these guys hanging. I hope you'll forgive me.

These imaginary rules were put in place back when some of us immature posters were releasing coaching news and other breaking news before our Athletic Department could...after quite a few years of maturing and paniced phone calls I realized we realized it was not in our best interest

What will the stadium be called? Still Worthington or can we start a FF contest for the new name? :D
We will name it after the first FF member to donate $3 million or more!

Sly has a love-hate relationship with Dennis Carter, so I think Sly would be fine with our Chancellor breaking the news on Flame Fans. And I have to say, this makes a TON of sense: new stadium for the guys, and the girls inherit Worthington Stadium for softball (minus the new scoreboard).

The only other thing that hasn't been answered is what will become of the space where the current girls' softball fields are?

Too early to say, Jim. Student Activities will likely take it over for intramurals but, when the new residential quad is built, there will be plenty of green space between the dorms so the properties on the perimeter may become parking. Ask me again in a year or two.

Maybe softball can finally have some night games as well since they will be playing at Worthington Stadium starting in 2013

jbock, 09, alabama, byduke, flamehunter, BJ, flamerbob, HMO and others, I appreciate all of your support and commitment to Liberty as well! I appreciate the dedication of all the FF members to Liberty. Having grown up at Liberty, I have to pinch myself every now and then because all that has happened here the last few years sometimes does just not seem real. I love to read this board whenever I get time because it is a reminder that there are so many others who recognize and appreciate the amazing things that God is doing at Liberty.
Jkill617 wrote:Very Impressive! So is the amphitheater still going up aswell?
Good question but the amphitheater is not high on the priority list. When the ravine between the stadium and the law school was filled in, an amphitheater-shaped hillside was created on the lower side of the fill section purely by accident. You can see it from the upperside of the new tennis courts. The idea of an amphitheater arose after we saw that we had already built one. All that is needed are rows of seats and a stage. The new academic and residential quads are first in line though.

There will be another story about the new baseball stadium on www.liberty.edu in the morning.

MR. CHANCELLOR:

1. I was reading thru, HOPING for something about a new driving range since I could never find the old one. Hope they let old geezers use it even though they may swear once in a while  due to an errant drive

Now when do we start on the 18 hole 36 hole course?

2. I'm personally giving you blanket permission to break any rules you want - just reciprocating for that whole thing I was going thru in the 80's
