It’s filled with God pursuing justice, settling scores with folks who messed with him, or who messed with his people, and – believe it or not - Jesus is “Exhibit A.”

God does not pursue justice. He IS justice. What 'scores' does settle with people?

I didn’t assume that “getting even” had to imply mal intent;

Yes because when someone says "I'm gonna get even with you' it is so rarely malicious. :roll:

I decided to make a nuanced, theological point: “God would, and he did, get even.”

Nothing 'nuanced' theologically about it. It is wrong.

I don't think anyone would argue that Christians should not be strong and bold in their Faith. That is not the issue. The fundamental issue is what to do to those who wrong you? Apparently, it's ok to 'Get Even' and stoop to their level. Apparently our God is petty and seeks to get even with those who wronged Him. I guess the weekend at Calvary was just for looks.

Funny movie. And I'm not splitting hairs. I have given examples of why the concept of God getting even is wrong. I didn't even have to go through verbal gymnastics to do it. I'm still waiting to see where Scripture talks about God getting even. With all the sin in my life I certainly hope God doesn't get even with me. But apparently I'm the only one with sin in my life.

No, not hardly ..... you know where I'm coming from :wink:
Everyone's human, even the "leaders" at LU. But I believe they get it right about 90% of the time. Not perfect, but not bad?

I have no idea what that hand is doing!

Just because you disagree with one thing does not mean you disagree with all things. Trying to justify the ''new' theological concept that God gets even is one of those things that is something I can't agree with, because it flies in the face of everything Christ teaches and did.

For the wages of sin is death...

Romans 6:23

Countless scriptures talk about hell for those who sin, do not repent, and do not believe. I would think "If this, then that" is a form of getting everything even at the end, no? If you sin, then death is the other half? In order to get to that half it must be "even."

If sin, then death

or written another way

Sin = Death

Therefore death (hell) is getting even on judgement day with a life lived of sin and denial.

Lets say one day you go on a date with a girl, get engaged, married and have kids. Sixteen years later your child takes your car without permission. When they return you scold them, ground them, take the keys and tell them they can no longer drive your car. A month later they take your car again. This time you call the police, who find arrest and charge your child with DUI and underage drinking. You ground them until they are 18, take their liscense away, take their phone etc away. A month later you come home and find the car gone again. This time the police knock on your door and tell you they found your car wrapped around a tree and your child dead.
Did you just get even with your child?
The wages of these 'sins' are death. I'm sure the parents felt like they 'got even'. Maybe even said 'Serves them right'

Nobody can ever say that they were wrong or they made a mistake. You just have to dig deep and find a way to spin things into being kind of right.

nonononononononononono.

:banghead :banghead

Death is the wages that we earn when we sin. It is not God getting even -- it is us getting what we have earned. When you get a paycheck for the work you do in a week, is your employer "getting even" with you? Or is he giving you what you have earned?

Geez -- what are they teaching in theology classes at Liberty these days???

Technically....

Using the job example, you aren't paid each second for the work you do. Every month, two weeks, or every week you receive a paycheck. Your employer is indebted to you for the hours you work, and "gets even" with you by paying you every pay period. Your employer doesn't "square up" or "get even" unless they have paid you for all the work you'e done.

hell is not God getting even with us...Its us not accepting His gift and therefore we are not even with Him

I don't know why this debate is still going on.

It was silly for anybody to try to put a theological spin on something donald trump said. Its Donald Trump, nobody expected some great theological comments from him. That is what happens when you have a bad pastor running your PR dept.

I can now see why you use the lower case 'l' in your name

I'd say that Moore's opinion carries no more weight than mine. I can't believe he even got press coverage... as if he is a great theological expert. Trump was here as a business person... why Moore feels the need to wrap our Christianity or Theology around him is bewildering. I'm surprised that Moore hasn't addressed the pansy-fication of today's Christian men; I doubt if Jesus was considered to be a pansy, since carpenters tend to be a pretty tough sort. I guess that would be a bit to close to home at Liberty, though. :wink:

If you read the article and the bio of Johnnie at the end, you'd know exactly why he said something.
Johnnie Moore is a vice president, professor of religion, and campus pastor at the nearly 100,000-student Liberty University. He is the author of a forthcoming book on Jesus and grace entitled: Dirty God: Jesus in the Trenches. Keep up with him on Twitter (@JohnnieM) or at Facebook.com/JohnnieOnline.

Not too interested in reading about Johnnie. I've seen him enough to know that I wouldn't waste money on a book by him.

I think the point was that he made a statement because it would get him some publicity and in turn help him sell more books.

The cynicism is unbelievable. Surely we wouldn't say those things simply to sell a few more books or secure funding from a new donor. :twist or want to be called Shirley

No doubt- just didn't want to waste my time. I'm sure he'll sell tons- Liberty will probably make it a text book for the "Christian Living" course. That's good for 80-100,000.
