1) The words to the Fight Song

2) The reason we use an Eagle is not because a pack of Eagles is a Flame. We use it because it looks cool.

3) Our main rival in football is VMI (I guess). Our main rivals in other sports are Radford, hereby termed as Effing Radford, and Longwood.

4) You wear red to games. You do not wear blue, you do not wear white. You wear red.

5) Sports in college are different than high school. You go to the game. You stay the entire game. You have fun.

In all serious-ness, it would be a good thing to do during orientation. It's a way to inform the kids all at once and to make freshman seminar a little more fun.
6) you go to the game, and never sit down.

i like that idea

I'll teach a section of that class for free as well.

7. Be as loud and obnoxious as possible on away trips.

And SJ-you forgot High Point...my freshman and sophomore years, that was a big rivalry.

8. If you are in the band, get your freaking butt back in the stands for the 3rd quarter. The players don't get to visit with their parents after half-time.

Sitting down is ok, as long as you're not in the first 15-20 rows.

9) No coming down from the stands to pray for and lay hands on an injuried visiting player, no matter how "led" you feel.
(yes, I have witnessed that at LU)

I thought you were going to say, "No coming down from the stands and running onto the field with 5 seconds left" and I was going to say I was guilty of that.

I am changing my prediction: LU over "The Wood" by 15

SJ If you can't find a way to use that "research" I will lose what little respect I already have for you :D

Will miss the game (although I have a SWEET parking pass  ) Will be engaged with a certain team from VERY rural VA whose warm ups look like some thing from Ronald McDonald.

Ive said it once and I will say it until Im blue in the face...IF YOU HAVE A (insert string of censored words here) PROBLEM WITH THE FACT THAT THE BAND TAKES A BREAK DURING THE 3RD QUARTER, TAKE IT FREAKIN UP WITH DR KERR! I can be an intermediary as much as I can but I really think that these are things that shold be heard directly from the fans and alumni. I mean you should at least give some credit that the band tries to get back in the stands as soon as possible. Now I could talk to Dr Kerr about getting the band back in the stands and pass out water there.

YA HAPPY???

BJ, i love ya brother, but until the band stops doing this, they will catch grief, so don't take it personally man. you should get an official word from kerr about it and post it.

The real history behind our mascot and Flames -

History Of The Flames Nickname The Liberty University athletic teams were nicknamed the Flames in 1974. No other team claimed this unique distinction until the spring of 1982 when the student body of the University of Illinois at Chicago voted in the Flames through a write-in campaign. Their choice was based upon the fact that the Chicago fire started only three blocks from the campus.

The student body also made the choice for Liberty in 1974 when they chose the Flames over several other choices. The decision was based upon the school's motto, "Knowledge Aflame."

Liberty began in 1971 as Lynchburg Baptist College with green and gold as the school's colors. In 1976, the name was changed to Liberty Baptist and the colors to red, white and blue. In 1985, the college obtained university status and the name was changed to Liberty University. Throughout these changes, the Flames remained as the nickname for Liberty's athletic teams.

In 1980, the Eagle was designated as the new Flames mascot. An Eagle was selected because of the patriotic symbolism and connection with the school name - Liberty. It was designed with the Flames' nickname in mind. Thus, the flaming torch clutched in the Eagle's left talon was included with the original mascot renderings.

Longwood is considered a rival because our History is very deep with them. Back in the days, we were in the same conference and the series was very competitive. Then we went in different directions. It's only been in the last couple of years that Longwood has put more effort in their sports programs.

Still a Rival - Yes and No! Yes, because their close, but no, because a rival should be competitive and though they beat us last year - there really aren't that many sports that they would be able to compete with us.

Big South? Don't even go there. Go to their school, see their facilities and then post again. That would be a huge mistake. Just because they are a college, and field athletic teams, doesn't qualify them for a conference. The Big South can not just let any school in, they need to be particular about who they invite. Longwood's facilities are a joke. When you add a school like that - it brings the whole conference down. All the schools have to send their teams there and that is not going to help improve any BSC school's recruiting efforts - "Hey our conference is great - you will get to play in high school facilities" - this is the big time. Let them improve their facilities and then re-apply.

Another Note - Sorry - I thought by breraking these up, it would keep me from writing the longest post in FlameFans History.

I said this last year before we lost to them - we better not overlook them. They are athletic, have nothing to lose, and are used to playing good schools in a hostile enviroment. They have played a tough schedule the last 5 years - this is only making them better.

lets go for 8,000 strong in the Vines on saturday, haha...kidding....i meant 9,000
9,000? That will never happen - YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY?

LU's students are a joke and an embarrassment!!!! Harsh - yes, but true. They are to busy going to movies 10 or drinking coffee at Starbucks to actually show some school spirit. Back when I was at LU, we had a fifth of the students and everyone came out to the games - one because there was nothing better to do and to support the Athletics program and our fellow students who played. Now there are 10,000 students on campus and we can't get 1000 students to show up without giving things away. I have heard arguments like, "I don't know the players - so I don't feel like I can relate with them." JOKE - Do students at Duke personally get to meet the players? I have heard that I have to much homework!! Another joke - if you cannot take a 2 hour break from your studies at LU, then you have time management issues:)

If we want to be a big time program, it's not all up to Barber and Dunton, a big part is atmosphere. The students create that atmosphere. Barber is doing a great job trying to develop LU athletics into a powerhouse - the least the students can do is go to the games. AND THE BEST PART - THEY'RE FREE!!!! After you graduate - you have to pay for everything.

Okay, Duke has more tradition than we do....they have more incentives to go to games than we do. What is wrong with some students being students without being in attendance at games. Why are they pathetic.

Students should help with the atmosphere, but should not be called terrible.

If a fifth of the students came to the games when you attended, then it couldn't have been that many people. 1/5 now would still be less than 2,000.

I think he was saying the total attendance was 1/5 of what there is now, and they still managed to fill up the stadiums better than we do now.

It is pretty sad because 85% of the students or more do not have a clue what is going on with LU sports. It might have gotten better since then, but it couldn't have gotten much better.

Duke developed tradition. Duke has no more incentives than we do, unless you consider sleeping in the cold for 24 hours to secure a ticket. Yes, they play against better competition, but the point is that LU games are competitive and there fun. I'm a Duke fan also, but I would guess that most those fans there were not big basketball fans - they just like supporting their school and creating an environment that is second to none. They would show up whether Duke was 32-0 ranked first or 5-21. They believe in school spirit down there.

I'm sorry for being harsh, but it is frustrating to see the potential for LU's athletics programs and then see the way that the students devalued it. Atmosphere is completely the students responsibility. Back in the my days, the students set the tone. And the games were decently attended, because the public not only wants to come see a good game, they want to come watch students get crazy for their team and watch Jerry surf the crowd.

I believe we had somewhere around 2400 students on campus when I graduated - 1995? Students went to the games. We had more people in the stands than we do now - that's the point!!

3 years ago - the students came out, but LU had to spend 6-10 grand to get them excited. We need to get the fire started again and bring back the Furnace. Make the Vines Center a place where you do not want to come.

The fans just do not know what to think...A freshman last year would have seen us win 1 football game and the basketball team win a total of 7. They are probably the majority at games because they have less committments than others, and it's probably just hard for them to come out and get their hopes up.

You just made my point!!! It's not about wins and loses - it's about school Pride. It's about supporting your team whether they win or lose. Do you think any team at LU is going to get better when Dunton or Green brings in a recruit to the ECU or VT game and they see 1,500 fans at the game?

Let's look at this from a diffrent perspective - I'm a father of two boys. If they join a team and their team loses every game during the rec season, should they quit playing becuase they can't win or should I stop going because they're not good. No I will support them through good times and bad times. These kids are working their butts off to win and shine a light in Liberty - the least we can do is support them. They gave up their personal lives at college to play for your school.
