We have plenty of other guys who can rebound missed FTs.

He's a big dude and its something he does very well. No one was going to push him under the basket. It's a no brainer. It even says so on page 17 of the Upward book.

This. Who are we going to put in for Coronado who is a better FT shooter? That would be Gielo. Does Gielo get pushed around? That would be a yes.

PH is right in that Coronado is our best rebounder and having the big body helps him to get those 50-50s in the paint. If we had a big that not only could rebound but was a superb free throw shooter then I could see a move being made but with the score as close as it was, I can see Coach Layer playing toward the rebounding side than the free throw shooting side in that situation

I don't understand the question. All I can say is that I questioned the thinking immediately. It worked out in the end, so what the heck do I know?

My point was lets say Layer hadn't had him in for the FT and whoever was in there got pushed aside and Radford got the rebound. Wouldn't people then be asking why our best rebounder was on the bench at a time when we desperately needed a rebound? At t hat point worrying about a persons FT % is secondary to someone's ability to get a rebound

I guess what's done is done, but in that situation we have plenty of other bigs who are more than capable of getting a rebound of a missed FT. If JVP and Smith were in there closest to the hoop and one them failed to get the rebound, it would suck but I would think that it is a completely normal strategy to keep Coronado out of the game when he has a chance to get fouled, as it is unlikely for the other bigs to not get a rebound like that. Just as it was unlikely for JR to hit either of those FTs.

without getting a rebound there is no possibility of getting a free throw thus making the rebound the most important aspect of the play..it was a good decision Coronado is a beast on the boards

Its true...consider this: Radford was down 2 at that point...they are also one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the conference (as was I believe mentioned already). There are two scenarios that work in their favor at that point: 1) He makes the free throw making it a one point game 2) He misses the free throw and they get the rebound and a possession to tie or take the lead. Only one option can fully benefit LU at this juncture: Get the rebound should he miss. Coach Layer decided to play for that one option. If the Radford player makes the free throw it puts the onus (sp?) on Coach Layer as to whether to make an offense for defense substitution for COronado or to leave him in for the ensuing trip down the court for Liberty

Coranado is under 50% for the year, but he has actually shot his FT a bit better lately. He is 9 for 16 in BSC play. That´s 56% If your option is Vander Pol, he is shooting 57% over the same period. Like I said, the only big we have who is really a good FT shooter is Gielo, and right now I would not want to count on him to get that rebound.
