Nicols seems to be righting the ship
I agree. They seem to be building a solid program. If they stay on their current track, they will be included in the top 4 with LU, CCU, and SBU most years. Which is great, the more the merrier.

I don't see it as much with Presby fans as I do with VMI fans. VMI fans tend to think they can beat anyone in football, and rarely do. Secondly, when they get killed, they pull the military card out on you.

I mean, my goodness, they lost to Delaware State. At Home. Nothing could be more embarassing.

Irritating to say the least. Real soldiers don't brag about their service.

False. CSUcks' loss to DIII Wesley on homecoming is way worse.

Wesley isn't just a D3 school, they're pretty good, and probably could beat DSU. Anyways you raise a fair point my friend.

Not cool man.
Truth is a defense. John Kerry goes bragging about shooting himself. Meanwhile my cousin doesn't really talk about his actions in the military openly.

C'mon guys. We're losing our focus.
That, or maybe those jokes are simply stale and not all that funny.
like the Jim Bakker and Tammy Faye cracks that made no sense considering SLY was trying to start a legitimate discussion on your board KILTS?

or the comments @ Asa when he made a second attempt? 8)

oh well. He tried.
My comments about Asa were not smack - just my opinion of the situation. Apparently, most LU folks feel the same way.

how original.

Seriously though, Liberty is the "flames." Why the Eagle then? Is "flames" a mention of the holy spirit? Does the Eagle come from imagery in Isaiah?

The two are not interconnected in the origins. The Flames come from our school's motto of "Knowledge Aflame" and it is officially our nickname. The eagle is just used as our mascot. When athletics hired some of the guys on this board to upgrade our logo they chose to combine the two.

Back when some of us Old Hags were in school in the late '80s, there was an effort made by the school to change the nickname to Eagles. But the student body overwhelmingly voted it down. We were the first sports team to have the nickname with the Atlanta/Calgary Flames and Illinois-Chicago adopting it later on down the line.

That's not the story I was told. Or anyone in my graduating class as far as I know. We were told a "flame" is a flock of eagles. Long story short, way back in the day Jerry Falwell saw an Eagle flying over the football field during a game or something like that and Jerry liked the Eagle as a mascot but not as the nickname because too many teams had that nickname and Jerry wanted LU to be different so he came up with "Flame" because it is also a flock of eagles. Don't criticize me on this story this is only what myself and a bunch of other students were told when we got on campus and I've never looked into it to see if it was true or not.

That story has since been discredited NUMEROUS times over (about a flame being a flock of eagles)

The flock of eagles story is something that freshmen are often told. It's not true, but many people on campus keep it going as sort of an inside joke.

Of course, there are plenty of people who believe it, too.

Liberty has won the last two meetings in Lynchburg by a combined score of 103-33 (48-14 in 2007 and 55-19 in 2009) and only allowed 30 points or more in a conference home game one time (34 to VMI in 2007)

A group (not flock, flock is specific to other types of birds, and also to sheep and a couple other ground animals) of eagles is called a Convocation or Congregation. (That's why we called it the "Vines Convocation Center!")

So there is definitely some semi-christian imagery there, but nothing to do with Flames.

I'm not sure how often eagles are in groups tho... they seem like solo fliers, to me.

Beej, what is our all time record versus D1 opponents who are not yet eligible for conference championships because they just moved up from D2?

Course the point is that when PC has come to Lynchburg of late...it has not been pretty...last time the Blue Hose left Lynchburg with a win...1985
