I was sitting behind home plate at Dan Daniel that day and that was the weirdest sound I have ever heard from a bat. My friend with me (a RU guy) even said somethign as soon as the ball was hit). That crap goes on all the time anyway, shaving and rolling. Not saying that kids bat was shaved by any means, but it's naive to think that it doesn't happen. It's not bush league at all (what Toman did), but it's not going to change anything. There was no point arguing because the umpires have no idea what to look for and you can't tell off of an eye site test unless the guy shaving is a goober and didn't put the cap back on corectly. If you want to get a good example of what a difference it makes, go play slow pitch softball at some tournaments in salem and you can see the difference between the shavers and non-shavers. Those guys just hit absolute ropes that don't get more than 8-10 feet off the ground and still leave the park. HMO is dead on with the analogy of rolling a bat. Again, I agree rolling a bat is not dirty at all, it simply breaks it in. The big reason it's so bad is that it's dangerous because it thins the wall of the bat out which almost doubles the speed that the ball comes off the bat (think for a pitcher how scary that could be).
For one of the CCU guys
HOw did you guys come across Iglesias? Most of those guys that good just sign straight with MLB clubs. I'm guessing he was a top notch prospect, I just can't figure out how you guys got him there unless an MLB team drafted him and shafted him on money? I dont know anything about the kid's background, this is an honest question. You just dont see a ton of good foreign born players in college baseball because they defect and go straight to the minors.
-Also Gilmore is from my hometown, guy's a good coach, but man is he cocky. He has come back and done some camps around and he's just hard for me to really like, maybe i'm just biased. Either way, he's done a great job there.
Are we out of the Big South yet
