Watauga County voted for gay marriage yesterday. I doubt that happens in Lynchburg.

Another reason we shouldnt be included in the Appy State Letter.

One would think the long term potential of Liberty would be much greater than Appalachian State as well. I think these conference commissioners are forgetting that we're only 40 years old. If they had the foresight to see the next 40 years they would take us in a the blink of an eye. We already broadcast our games nationwide on our own TV network for crying out loud. The thought process that your market is "only as big as your local city" is lost on me. I can name 10 big-time universities in small towns that are a part of a major conference because they have nationwide appeal. Technically the Lynchburg/Roanoke/Danville market is bigger than Madison, WI but the Badgers obviously have a national following.

Can someone explain to me why your LOCAL media market matters so much? Why are these commissioners not looking nationwide, or schools that have nationwide potential?

Take Rutgers for example, #1 media market in the country yet the Big-Ten didn't take them and the ACC didn't take them because outside of New Jersey NO ONE cares about Rutgers, and RU is probably the 4th or 5th college team in the Big Apple behind 'Cuse, PSU, UCONN, etc. Syracuse is 84th in the media rankings, but has twice as many Syracuse graduates living in NYC than Rutgers graduates and even PSU has more graduates in the Big Apple than Rutgers. It was an easy pick for the ACC to bring them in over Rutgers and the Big-Ten was smart to leave them out - the Big-Ten already owns the NYC media market with Penn in there.

Likewise South Bend, Indiana is the 97th ranked media market yet any conference in the country would love to have ND in there.

Again can someone explain to me why your local town matters in media rankings? Shouldn't the more important question be where do your alumni live?

Advertising is sold based on media markets. Money is driving realignment. Liberty has the highest ceiling of the schools that would be potential FCS to FBS transitions, but the potential nationwide appeal is not part of the equation that is used when determining markets for media. Markets are based on a school's local proximity. Our nationwide appeal has not been realized and is only potential at this point.

Our time will come.

WTF does gay marriage have to do with this?

Going with the airport thing, yes teams can fly into Lynchburg but it has to be either a chartered flight or they're going through Charlotte on US Airways. Access is limited.

Finally, I agree with SumItUp, our time will come.

But that doesn't mean they don't care about the school, nor have an interest in what goes on around here. Many of these 'online' students come here precisely because we have an established residential program. Just look at the number of 'online' students that show up this Saturday. These people come from all over the United States just to visit the school and attend graduation. You can't tell me they don't care...
They're showing up because they want to walk at their graduation ceremony. To many, walking across a stage and receiving their degree is a huge deal. Thousands of people fly to Arizona to receive their online degrees from University of Phoenix, but that doesn't mean they're huge fans of that school either.

They don't fly to University of Phoenix in Arizona... if anything they go to their local satellite campus as the University of Phoenix has quite a few of those around the country. This is totally different to what we will witness here in Lynchburg this Saturday.

See this: http://www.phoenix.edu/campus-locations.html

If you don't believe me about this then go talk to any person that works up in Online - they will tell you that the "brick and mortar" factor is a huge selling point for us.

I wonder how hard LU has tried to bring LUO students into the fold? As a 3-year LUO student (07-10), I never received one email or letter from the Flames Club, let alone any other entity within the Athletics Department. Even if only 2-5% could be reaped, that's a LOT more than if zero effort or invitation is made.
This changed this past year... all online students should have received a multitude of e-mails about joining the Student Flames Club. There were a few who joined.

They hold several graduations at different locations throughout the year...

If you search "Graduation Commencement" on their website and keep scrolling through all the pages... you'll see my point.

I think because of how much more common it is becoming for typical, traditional universities to use online classes it won't be long until that stigma kind of fades. Unfortunately the for profit, nationally accredited online colleges have kind of given it a stigma that has taken a while to fight against.

This is why I don't think it will be used to get us into an fbs conference right now. It may be beneficial in a few years but not right now. Just another reason I am less convinced then ever we are moving up anytime soon.

Sorry, but that is a little off base. Since when do teams fly commercially? I've never heard folks at Tech list lack of air service as a big detriment and we have much better service than they do.

According to a poster on the JMU board at the CAAZONE, Richmond AD made some comments on ESPN radio: "Hardy Working" with Greg Burton, that ODU will announce next Monday they are joining CUSA.

http://boards.caazone.com/showthread.ph ... D-Comments
On ODU moving to CUSA: “Old Dominion I understand is most likely to accept a bid to Conference USA, I think that’s immanent from everything I’ve heard, that they’re making an announcement on Monday. I haven’t heard that from any ODU folks, but that’s what I understand is right around the corner.”

You mean something like this?

This actually is only alumni donors for a certain time period. I had our IT department whip it up back when I was with donor services. Something like this could easily be done with total alumni though. That file would take FOREVER to compile because of the amount of data but it can be done pretty quickly and I'd be shocked if it isnt/hasnt already been requested.

I think he's saying that to get the data required would take a while due to the amount of data necessary, but that once the data is compiled that making the actual file wouldnt take that long

Meaning that computers cant keep up with the amount of data that needs to be processed (and the bandwidth) so compiling a file with millions of different pieces of info sometimes can take a full day to process. Writing the code to pull the data isnt that bad. Does that make sense?
