CONCORD, N.C. - Gardner-Webb was still a relative newcomer to Division I football in 2002, when it went 2-1 to win the inaugural Big South football championship. The other three teams in the conference - Charleston Southern, Liberty and Elon - combined to go 10-24. Forget being a player in I-AA football. The Big South was a blip, at best.
"I didn't know what to expect. I didn't know if the league would make it," Gardner-Webb coach Steve Patton said at Friday's conference media day. "I didn't know if some teams wanted to jump to the Southern or the (Ohio Valley)."
