I think shuck just did. If we're going to put a defibrillator every 50 feet or so, why stop there? We could have one giant box full of vials of epinephrine, insulin, adrenaline and anti-venom. While we're at it, we should pad all the walls (assuming they're asbestos-free) and station a lifeguard on every other corridor in case of incidents at the water fountain.
why not just a mini hospital every 50 feet? lol

Yes you can, you have health insurance don't you?

Leave it to Shuck to have a positive outlook on life. IF you have a heart attack at LC and equipment is not nearby because of the cost, swallow hard and be thankful you have health insurance.

My opinion on them: Have one in every building (i.e. one in the TE hall, one in the science hall, etc) and then in DeMoss, have two on each floor.

equipment is nearby. at anytime, an AED is within approximately a minute or less of your location, unless you're in the woods, then you are just screwed. plus we have LC EMS, LC security, athletic trainers, the head man of the Lynchburg Life Saving crew (he is the Chaplain for the college), and the hospital is just up the road.

oh, and me since i'm certified in cpr and first-aid. someone would probably be better off with nothing in that case though lol

I'd say a film school, but that's not likely to happen anytime soon. The one professor who seemed to be pushing for it was just recently let go.

I've been trying all day to figure out what we need. We have pretty much everything I think we could need.

The only thing I could think of is a pharmacy school.

Agriculture?

Veterinary Medicine?

I can't think of much more unless we start expanding our existing colleges with some new departments.

I think Blacksburg has that one covered.

Good call, Supe. That would blend nicely in the College of Medicine and Allied Health.

and there aren't a whole lot of pharmacy schools around. I think that the only ones in nc are chapel hill and Cambell, b/c i have some friends who have wanted to do pharmacy and i think those were there options. I think we could bring in a pretty decent number of students if we offered pharmacy

They pretty well have engineering covered, too, but we're getting into that. NCSU also has large agriculture and engineering programs, but that doesn't stop Tech from having the same programs just a few hours away.

Like JDub said, there's not that many schools that have the program. Also, Pharmacists make a bunch of money, meaning we get donations.

Rx school is a good ideal. Agriculture would be good also, looking at it from a missionary perspective, help give other countries the abilitiy to raise crops, bread, etc and at the same time giving them the Bread of Life. Also offer architecture.

of course it would.
Fumblerooskies wrote:Not enough...as evidenced this past school year when one of our law prof's passed away. I think each LUPD vehicle carries one...and there is one at each athletic facility and on site for practices and games. They are definitely NOT in evidence on walls throughout campus like you would think, though.

(BTW...where is Medic? He's usually standing tall on a thread like this)
I'm back: skip a few days and look what I miss
and you're right- they need to be IN the buildings- there aren't enough cops to go around.

shukcb04 wrote:dont you think you are being a bit unrealistic? those things cost anywhere from 1500-3000+ EACH. it would cost a school as small as LC well into the hundreds of thousands to be able to have that many. and if they were on the walls of the halls, that could be quite dangerous if some hooligan wanted to play a joke and got one and used it on someone, that could very easily result in a death.
Dear SHUCKS:
1. cost has come down- only 1400 to 1800 ea, and less if you're buying in quantity. Also less if you are a non-profit or educational institution. Also, hundreds are donated annually by corporations- several years ago, every PD in my area that wanted some got them .

2. ask Prof Jean's family what price would've been too much. For that matter, ask ANY 18 yr old's family. Have you ever delivered a death notification to a grieving family? Try reassuring them that everything possible was done- then admitting you wanted to save a few bucks on life saving defibrillation technology.

3. you're talking out your posterior when it comes to the "hooligan" comments. I'm assuming you got your prehospital advanced life support training by watching E.R. AED's don't just fire arbitrarily. They are ALL semi-automatic, meaning they will not discharge without prompting the user to MANUALLY trigger the device- and that ONLY after a SHOCKABLE rhythm has been detected. The alogorithms programmed into the machines will NOT allow a NORMAL SINUS heart rhythm to be shocked.

Never let the facts get in the way of making your point, I guess.

LU is playing Russian Roulette every day they fail to put an ALS ambulance in service on a campus of 12k (+)

the least they could do is put AED's in each building.

not enough tragedy yet to motivate anyone, I guess.

Criminal Science
Med school..only two others in the state (although two of the best in the country U.Va. and MCV). If we could ever get our hands on the old RR mall or the shopping center across from TRBC we could build a hospital there.
Vet school..only one other in the state of Va. at V.Tech. The next closest Vet school is NC State
and DEFINATELY a Physical Therapy School..we only have two other in the state of VA. at Shenandoah and ODU

actually, Lynchburg College approved last Friday to add a Doctor of Physical Therapy program, so that makes three now. The charter class is slated for the Fall of 2010, and assuming they achieve their accreditation goal, it will be an accredited program as soon as the program starts.

i don't see us starting a med school any time soon unless a very significant amount of money is donated specifically for that purpose. it would cost so much money and require so much space that it just isn't practical right now.

i'd like to see some money poured into the accounting program. it is weak right now and could turn out some serious potential donors down the road. also add a forensic accounting major. there aren't that many of them i don't think, and it could be a unique draw without costing too much extra money to the school

i like the criminal science idea also
