I guess we now have some confirmation on RMc's first verbal for the coming year and he comes from Armon's alma mater. So my guess if jmdickens has an opinion of this kid.

This is the guy most of us have been hearing about for awhile now. But I couldn't find anything online until now.

As predicted McKay really likes his guards. He sounds pretty well rounded. He is pretty short though.

He's still taller than Medic.

He's supposed to be the real deal. He's been on McKay's radar for awhile--and verbaled awhile ago.

if he's playing in the rusty larue summer league, i'll ask some of my buddies about him down there who play in it. that league typically has some pretty good talent, normally full of a bunch of D1 players so he'd at least be playing against some reasonably good talent.

Scar, since you are the resident expert in Flames basketball, have we ever had a basketball player in the 5'8" to 5'9" range? I've been following the team since '85, and I can't ever recall a Flame who was that...vertically challenged.

I had a teammate named Fred Morgan that was special! He wore #20 before me. At 5-8 he was by far our shortest player and he is most known for the 1st Miracle on the mountain. He hit a buzzer beater in Jan 1986 that most old timers remember as one of the greatest shots in LU Hoops history. A fall away jumper from 3 with no time left to lift us over then #3 in the Nation Mt St Mary's. A year later a soph from Philly wearing the same number due to Morgan's dismissal from school for academic reasons, got a chance to repeat history. That was the Scarborough Scorches Mt Headline that you may have heard me talk about in other threads. Jim you must have early stages of altheimers man. You don't remember the big fire that created the bald spot on the mountain nor the Freddie Morgan Miracle shot? :P I also had another teammate during our division 1 years named Rodney Harden that was about 5-8. Rodney's dad was a Converse executive and his brother Roger played at Kentucky during our time. Then there was Nathan Miller who was better known as "Bats" and he was here with Hildo and company. He was around 5-9. All 3 players were dismissed from school for various reasons unrelated to height  Jeff Riber was about 4-6 too right? :P

Scar, I knew you would come through for me. I remember Freddie Morgan, but never knew exactly how tall he was. I was in the Multi-Purpose Building when he made that shot. Now that you mention his name, Rodney Harden was a guard that I recall as well. Let's just hope that our newest 5" niner lasts all 4 years.

Freddie couldn't palm a ball but he could still slam it. He was a fellow Buckeye from Ohio and that shot is part of LU sports lore for us Old Hags.

Except for Miller, who didn't play much for LU and ended up transferring to a D2 school, all of the above mentioned mighty mites played in the pre-D1 era. I'm trying to think of players under 6' who have made a significant contribution since we moved up, and I'm drawing a blank. Could it be that Bannister (5'10") will be the first?

Actually Old Flame, Morgan is the only one that did not play division 1. The other 2 were division 1 prospects and I would say Morgan was probably better than both of them.

I was off a couple of years on Harden I guess SCAR. I agree that Freddie Morgan was the best of the bunch. The bottom line is it has been a long time since we have had a player under 6', and IMHO that was by design and players who could have made us better were passed over because RD and Hanky just didn't think little guys could play D1 ball. I'm not saying that we want a roster, or even a backcourt full of them, but a small PG with quickness, skill, leadership and court awareness can certainly make a contribution.

And we all know that our recent 6'6" point guard experiment failed (twice).

There are several who doubt whether BJ Jenkins is actually 6-0 tall. Some say that he is 5-9 to 5-10, at the most.

BJ's not 6 feet tall. There's no chance of it.

He's still good.

I certainly have an appreciation for gutsy little guys like Morgan, however, I fail to see the significance of the Mt. St. Mary's games of the past, especially to the point where we are still talking about them today.

Also, If we are gonna talk about smaller guards, then let's not fail to leave out the greatest of them all: Karl Hess, who was around 5-9.

JFK's death, the 1980 miracle on ice and Freddie Morgan's shot to beat the #3 team in the country. If you were around, you remember where you were standing when they occurred.

Earlier McKay grabbed Johnny Stephene, and now this kid. You really can't win at any level of play without skill, play-making and leadership from the point gaurd position. It's refreshing to see that the new staff is proactive in this area. You really need to be able to go three deep at that position--ideally, 2 point gaurds and a combo. Over the last couple of seasons, we seem to have compiled rosters consisting of a few post players along with a bunch of 2 and 3 guards.

Don't forget Edward Marks.

I think that Marks was around 5-9. He was a decent point gaurd for Hank in the D1 era.

if bj isn't atleast 5'11 then larry must be 5'9 and that isn't true... BJ is 5'11 with no shoes on.

how could I forget Gumbo Marks? We recruited him and he played in RD's interim year I believe....Dox, surely you were around when Morgan hit the shot and the following year when we beat them in our place. The atmosphere was special. Forgive us Old Hags for never ever ever letting those days go. Thanks for backing me up on this one Baldspot 8)
