...on the front page of Saturday's paper, and neither of them involve sports. One states that the Liberty Village will house married & graduate students in the fall; the other article confirms that 138 acres have been sold for the Crossroads Colonnade, an "open-air shopping center...similar to Short Pump Town Center Near Richmond."

They've been talking about both these projects for a while. I'm surprised they're going to try to have Liberty Village ready for the fall though, wow.

i hope they don't put more of the same crappy stores that keep popping up around Lynchburg, and hopefully a minimal number of eateries, there's way too many now as it is.

not necessarily bad, but it's getting a bit excessive. Lynchburg needs more places for people to do sutff at other than shop and eat, like more sources of entertainment or whatever.

And, yet, the people of Lynchburg keep going to new places to shop and eat. If you want to make a fortune in Lynchburg, open up a brand new restaurant on Wards Road, wait a year and shut it down. Then, move down the strip and repeat.

I completely agree....the new places to eat are nice because its cool to have a lot of choices...but entertainment places are needed...A good music club, etc...etc....but I still say more places to eat is never a bad thing...but you're right it would be nice to have the other stuff as well

10,000 LU students, 3000 LC students (I think, could be wrong), plus people in Lynchburg, Forest, and other surrounding areas.

"Too many places to eat" is impossible.

about 2500 LC students, which includes the grad students and commuters of course. if there are going to be more eateries in this thing, which I would assume there would be, there should be some more healthy options because the world doesn't need more obesity food.

Man, you should start a commercial development company. Obviously these guys don't know how to make any money. They don't build stuff if there's no market for it. Or else nobody would go there and it would fail. I think they've probably done a little bit more actual research than your casual opinion based on observation.

I never said these guys don't know how to make money. I simply said what Lynchburg needs. I mean I have lived here for 23 years, I believe I do have some sort of sense of what the town needs.

But you have absolutely no sense about how those things you think the town needs come about, apparently. Entertainment doesn't bring in tax dollars. Retail does. If there are no tax dollars, the city doesn't grow. If the city doesn't grow, you will never see entertainment options expand. Entertainers of any quality don't waste their time on small ponds.

Then again, you hate on everything, it seems. Maybe you just need to get out of Lynchburg for a while.

there is something called an entertainment tax, which i do believe goes to the city.

The entertainment businesses you suggest that Lynchburg needs don't generate anywhere near the revenue per square foot of restaurants. So taking your personal interests out of the equation, you'll have to forgive folks trying to make a living for choosing to open another dining establishment instead of a place for college age kids to hang out.

agreed sly. i think the planning is just fine and the more eateries the better. this new mall will attract some top line retailers and i think will become a "regional" mall. what type of entertainments options are you looking for??? my only problem is the road situation. wards should have been widened to accomodate the traffic. it is just too congested.

me personally, I don't really want any entertainment options. i've managed to live without them just fine now. i just know i have heard people b****ing all the time for as long as I can remember about how there isn't anything to do in Lynchburg. what top line retailers do you think it will attract? and the road situation is very horrible over there. i don't even consider going over there past 5pm during the week.

What they need to do on Wards is put in an access road between Wards Crossing West and Wal-Mart. And on the other side they just need to link the parking lots...that would help things some I'd imagine.

As far as eateries, we do have a plethora, but more are always welcome. I will agree though, the town does need some type of club for college students to hang out at. Though personally, I'm hoping for Caribou Coffee to come into the mall.

You say we have a ton of places to eat, but they're really all the same. TGI Fridays, Applebee's, O'Charley's, they're the same. Logan's and Texas Roadhouse, pretty much the same.

We now have a "pizza place" (Ledo), just waiting on the southwestern (Moe's), and a few others. We need something that's the Cook-Out type with burgers, hot dogs, and other "cookout/ballpark" type foods.

If this new mall is anything similar to the Short Pump Town Center (about 20 minutes from me), then entertainment will already be factored into the equation. There are concerts in the courtyard area every Friday night http://www.shortpumpmall.com/info/summe ... ooking.cfm Granted...they are just local artists...but it also presents a great place for local artists to be heard by a whole lot of folks who would not hear them any other way, because those folks do not go to those clubs where those local artists play on a regular basis. My wife and I went out there and saw a group called Kings of Swing. Mostly a big band sort of sound and anything else that features lots of horns. We hung out there for about 25 minutes and then we split up to go to our favorite places: Hers -Dillards and Carte & Barrel. Mine - Apple & Bose[/url]

Well other than the concert thing, that place doesn't really sound that much different than the Lynchburg mall to me, although it does have more shops but a lot of them sound like they would sell the same thing, just with a different name on it.

EDIT: actually it sounds like a mixture of river ridge and valley view malls.

There's more to it than that. I know we can have some very oppresive heat and humidity in VA, but my wife and I really enjoy going there in the late fall / early winter. We find it to be an amazing display to sit on one of the many benches around and just gaze up into the sky and look at the stars...and there have been a few times when we've seen a shooting star....again, amazing. Not something you normally see at a mall.

The married housing thing is great for my family. We will be taking our sabatical year during the 08-09 school year and we were trying to figure out what we were going to do for housing. I will be working on my masters of education at LU and my wife will finish her masters for Regent University. With family housing our school will pay for it for the year. That frees up about $8,000 for us for the year! I can't wait to spend the year closer to LU and to join you guys. I hope this thing works out.

I don't think you've ever been to high-end retail mall. Valley View and River Ridge are both trash 80's malls that should be torn down.

scorchy, valley view has been upgraded, renovated and many higher end stores have signed on. though it is an indoor mall, it is still very functional and popular though the parking situation there is ridiculous. this new mall in the burg will certainly be much better though. now river ridge..that is a joke. no major renovations done in years and the selection of stores and eateries are abysmal
