waht do you do at a yield sign if a car is coming and has the right of way? do you just keep going and pray to God that they don't hit you?

agreed. I bet every single one of you wound up on 460 trying to get to Wards when you first got here. People have actually told me that Lycnhburg was voted something like "best road system" or some junk. That has got to be one of those stupid rumors that LU has so many of. No acceleration lanes, all cloverleaves, no direct route across town, 29S somehow magically turns into 501N, etc. It is impossible to give someone directions who has never been here. They always seem to contain the phrase "now I know this sounds dumb, but" or "I know this doesn't seem like it makes sense, but"
wound up on 460, and everytime my dad comes to town he does it. i've started driving them around b/c they always make wrong turns.
also, i've never heard of a no acceleration lane until i got here. i almost totalled my truck the first time i was on one. i was like... "what is a no acceleration I'M GONNA DIE AGGGGGHHHHHH!"

Yep. I get frustrated by this as well. There are some places that have no acceleration lanes & some that have a little. Since speed is relative, it is much easier to merge with traffic when you are going close to the same speed.

If you are trying to exit & someone is trying to come on, you should merge BEHIND them while they increase their speed to merge with traffic. People around here can't get that in their heads.

Also, when turning, you always turn into the nearest lane!!! My driver's ed instructor drilled that into us. I can't tell you how many times someone as almost smoked me when I was turning right & they were trying to make a left turn onto the same street in the same direction. They look at me funny, & I always hold up TWO fingers & say "There are TWO lanes".

if there isnt an acceleration lane you dont really have the time or space to speed up. and if there is a no acceleration lane you aren't technically supposed to speed up.

what pisses me off more than anything is in residential areas where heir isnt a yellow line down the middle of the street and people stop at the intersection and they are sitting directly in the middle of the street. i was trying to turn on to my street one time and some freaking moron was sitting in the middle of the road, preventing anyone else from turning in to the street. we were holding up traffic and this jacka$$ wouldn't turn to get out of the way. we were motioning them to go but they kept motioning for us to go, so we just ahd to keep sitting until they decided to turn. they looked at me like i was one of the biggest jerks on the face of the earth. similar things like this are always happening when i'm on the road. on one road I take to go home from work, there is a somewhat sharp turn, but shouldn't be difficult at all even in a hummer, yet these people ahve to nearly get their whole car on my side of the road. i've probably had about 10 instances in which I probably would have been dead or severely injured if they would have hit me.

I have heard this town called "the land time forget" due to taxes, housing costs, salaries.....and above all i think the road system looks like it was sketched while riding a rollercoaster( lets not make the roads wider, lets make huge looping exits....GENIUS). Driving a slow 4 cyl car ( since of course i gave the wife the nice ride) and trying to merge is tempting death at least a few times a week. I have upgraded now, but being from the north the patience you have to have to drive in this town truly is amazing.

i know the Lynchburg road system isn't exactly decent, but I'm just glad I don't ahve to deal with Northern VA traffic. one of my friends was leaving there to come down here to LC at the beginning of the school year and it took him over 3 hours just to get out of the Northern VA area!

I remember when I came here as a Coastal student it took us 30 minutes to find 29S so that we could go home.

I laugh at anyone who complains one bit about the traffic or roads around here. Our friend from LC is right...NOVA is a nightmare. Heck, Asheville is similar sized and traffic is way worse, there, with two major interstates merging in town.

I don't ever complain about traffic congestion as much as the way people drive and the way the roads are.

this thread further leads credence to the use of LANDMARKS for directions as opposed to street names.

Confession: I drive at the speed limit on purpose. I think people who are in a hurry are entertaining.

One morning, coming home on Candler's Mountain Road, towards the Wards Road intersection, I was in front of Chickfila and a lady came flying up behind me at around 50 or 60 mph. It's a 35, so of course, I was doing 35. I don't know if she just wasn't paying attention or what, but in order to not hit me she had to swerve into the oncoming lane and run both of the red lights in front of Little Caesar's. That's the kind of person that keeps me driving like my old country grandfather.

The sad part is she probably didn't have a fast car, but was hauling like that in a minivan with 2 kids.....that i see all the time, plus the people who are color blind and will run a red light way after you should be...

I just flat out hate people that merge onto your road and literally have to cut you off, then drive 10 miles below the speed limit. Mean while, there is no one for a mile behind you, what is that about? They could have just waited for you to go.

My friend from VA was with me when someone did that, I honked my horn twice, rolled down my window and yelled "Dude, you could have caused a friggin accident. What the heck?"

And he was like, "Dude, is that road rage?"

No, that's just how we roll in the Northeast. However, if that had been in Philly where I spend most of my weekends home, It would have included some expletives and some "yo".

Also, I am usually on time, so I have no need to drive all the fast. The problem is, I leave early and then get stuck behind a moron driving 25 in a 40 and I then need to drive fast to get to wherever I was going on time.

Also, funny story. My first week on campus here back in 2004, this random red truck that looks like a piece of crap pulls up next to me at that light down by Little Caesars and Chickfila. The guy inside, who I swear was an extra from deliverance, starts making these weird faces at me and starts reving his engine, like he wants to race. Light turns green, I'm gone. About 2 minutes later, I'm sitting at the light by the river ridge mall, and he finally catches up to me, gets into the turn lane into the river ridge mall, honking his horn and doing some sort of rebel yell. He had bumper stickers "the south will rise again" and one that even compared lincoln to Hitler, it was rather humerous.

A 1999 Ford Taurus from NJ beat an old Chevy from VA. The North stands victorious still!

I can't disagree with ONE thing in this post. (NJboy- you didn't flash your piece did you? that'd been rolling Philly style)

So I'm quoting it for ATRAINs benefit.

See, to me, these are conflicting viewpoints. If you yield to NJLibertyboy, you make Libertine mad. If you go ahead and merge but aren't fast enough, you've made NJLibertyboy mad. Madness on the highway!

Y'all misunderstand me. I'm not talking about Yields going onto the highway. I'm talking about Lynchburgers stoping at Yield signs on neighborhood surface streets when the only other moving vehicle within a square mile is directly behind them and, no doubt, in a hurry.

You can't do that in Lynchburg. That's the irony—driving the "right" way might just get you into an accident in this town.
