It depends on what your ultimate goal in advertising may be. If you are building brand identity and looking to generate buzz then a billboard can have great dividends if used effectively. While you are correct that it is not a pioint of purchase tool, something like LU football isn't goping anywhere and longterm benefits are substantial (as opposed to one time events like concerts).

True, I assume the LU marketing department is trying to generate buzz for the football team since it is supposed to be a top 25 team this year? I would think the billboards would be more effective if they surveyed the casual fan (meaning not the students or faculty/staff of LU) for a few games to determine what their driving habits are and where they drive, so they can properly place the billboards where the casual fan would most likely see them. Or survey them at every game and then bring out the billboards for the 2008 season if they live up to the preseason expectations. The hardcore fans (LU students, faculty staff, parents/family) are going to be there rather they go 11-0 or 0-11, so they would need to be sure the billboards reached the casual fan and not the hardcore fans.

In my opinion, I would think billboards for the men's basketball team would be more effective at this point since they just hired a new coach - it seems to me that a great deal of the fans are glad Dunton is out and really excited for McKay.

Either way, hopefully the design of the billboard looks better than the graphic on the liberty website for the flames basketball camp ;)

I doubt if you really care what the billboard for LU looks like, not that it will matter to you.

Well I sure as heck don't want it to to make the city look uglier.

I doubt a LU billboard is going to make the Burg uglier. And what do you think of the LU monogram?

I don't mind it, but I don't really see why they needed to make it so big. I sure won't have a b**** and moan session over it like a lot of people do by any means.

Dang right we're trying to sell our program! :) We've gotten more exposure since Bentley arrived than we've ever had. PC is just one of those schools that's a great little secret. We have great academics, a pretty campus, successful alumni and exciting sports teams. Problem is, with only 8,000 living alumni spread out all over the world, we're not known very well outside a few little enclaves throughout the Southeast.

Selling the football program actually helps us in two ways. First, in establishing a broader recruiting base we make ourselves more competitive in DI play. We've been getting the shaft in recruiting over the last 15 years because we compete with Furman and Wofford for the same athletes. So if you were a recruit trying to choose between three quality institutions, you'll write off PC automatically if it means you can get a great education and play DI ball. Gregg Nibert, our basketball coach, has said that smart, talented potential recruits have repeatedly told him that they love PC but want to play at the DI level. Now we're beginning to close the recruiting gap between us and the schools with whom we compete.

In addition, more things are going on around campus than just sports. We're constructing the first part of a $25 million science faciltiy, completely renovating the campus center, endowing new professors, and adding more scholarships. Our capital campaign has eclipsed the $100 million mark and is only getting bigger. Not too bad for a liberal arts school of only 1,200. So if people can hear about us through sports or see our name on the ESPN ticker and get their curiosity piqued, then they can learn more about us and see all the great things that are happening in Clinton. We've always had a great reputation, but starting now, more people will get to hear about it.

You will still fight the same battles with the two schools you mentioned...only it will be this:

Why should I go to PC and compete in one of the worst D-I/I-AA conferences in the country when I can go to Wofford or Furman and play in a REAL I-AA conference and still get a good education.

What WILL help you is when you compete against those great academic powers  like Limestone, Newberry, Catwaba, and the like.

Clintonites and old people are the only ones who pronounce it that way.

The thing that PC's going to run in for the next four years is, "Well, we're D-I, but we can't promise you a chance at post-season play until 2011." (I think it's 2011)

You take one step at a time. I'm glad to see PC investing in their programs. Its something some current Big South schools could take a cue from.

I'm going to probably get raked over the coals for this: The PC uniforms, not so great, but their Varsity Letter logo has a nice classic look to it...now, to me, LU's current letter logo seems a more appropriate script font for academic materials, but I am less of a fan of it as an Athletic Varsity Letter logo. Just my .02 to stoke an argument to give people something to post about during this lull on the mountain.

Any word on a helmet graphic facelift for LU's coming season?

OK, I know that this thread has been inactive for a while, but I'm at work and bored. OK. Time for a history lesson. One explanation in the link above of just why we're called the Blue Hose is completely wrong. There is no such thing as a Scotch-Irish tribe called the Hose who painted themselves blue. That would be the Picts, who adorned their bodies with a blue paint before going into battle. They're known as Picts because the Romans called these Celtic tribespeople "Pictes," from which we get the word picture. The Picts ran into battle completely stark naked save for their blue body paint and gold torques worn around their necks and arms, screaming like banshees. All this said and done, the Celts were defeated by the Romans in southern Britain in the 200's AD. During the time of William Wallace (1300's), the Scots had long ceased adorning themselves with Woad paint. Unfortunately, they didn't wear kilts, either. :( The term Scots-Irish didn't even originate until the 17th century when the English monarchs sent Scottish settlers to colonize Ireland and fill the area with people who were more sympathetic to the interests of the Crown. Thus, that whole suggestion is, as the English, Scottish, and Irish say, bollocks.

Essentially, we're socks. One sock, two socks, Red Socks, Blue Socks...er, Hose. 8)
