I hate it when folks dilute a championship. It bothered me when San Antonio won their first championship in the strike shortened season and it bothers me about the Steelers now. I don't even like the Steelers but to say their championship is tainted is just wrong. They won the game. The officiating was horrible and it was mostly against Seattle (No conspiracy here just bad breaks). The Steelers outplayed the Seahawks, scored more points and are the Champs. We should let it go and congratulate the Steelers. If anyone had a gripe about the officiating this playoff season it was the Steelers in that Indianapolis game. They almost got robbed of a chance to win the championship. But if the Colts had won that game and went on to win the Superbowl, I wouldn't try to diminish their championship. Officiating is part of the game and sometimes you end up on the bad end of a bad call or two. To give you a quick basketball story about Liberty (is this too off topic? I don't want to get this puppy closed down like the old mill in Pittsburgh  ). #25 Eastern Michigan led by Earl Boykins played us in Hawaii and with 2 seconds left they broke a tie on a basket that looked to be the game winner. We draw up the Laetner play but instead of Laetner (Aluma) catching the ball, he lets it go behind him where Larry Jackson is waiting to catch for a quick foul line jumper to tie. Well Aluma catches the ball about 23 feet from the basket, turns, fires and makes a game winning 3 pointer.....Wait, the clock showed 0:00 and the horn sounded before the shot is released. You might ask why did it take so long for a catch and shoot. We know you can do that in 1 second so 2 seconds is more than enough time right? Well the clock keeper started the clock while the ball was in the air before anyone had touched it and it cost us the game vs a top 25 opponent. RedDog should remember that one well and Jones too (although he was not there but was on staff at the time). My point is that sports are not perfect, they are governed by men and men make mistakes. Pittsburgh was the better team on Sunday and deserve to be world champs...Another side story was when we got to Hawaii I had an actual Seinfeld moment with the rentals. There were no vehicles on the whole island to be rented even though I had reservations. "They know how to TAKE the reservation, they just don't know how to HOLD the reservation...."

I got in touch of him by e-mail. He's overwhelemed at work right now but promises to get back on here as soon as he can catch his breath.

As for the tainted aspect, I had no rooting interest in either team. But it didn't seem like the Steelers deserved the victory. Its in the record books and all. But even Steelers fans had to feel funny about winning that way. I really wish the NFL would've owned up to the mistakes and intead of dismissing them this week.

As for Holmgren's rally "cry", it was lame to state his feeling public whether well-founded or not.

I'm surprised folks in North Carolina have even heard the BCS exists. Its not like they've had any reason to notice.

I agree that asterisks are even more lame than zebras taking the outcome of the biggest game on the planet away from the players.

As Sly's dad, let me say I loved the Steelers' win .. and I don't have a problem with it! I rather enjoyed the Steelers junk yard dog style. Was it a poorly played game?? You bet .. and while the refs had their problems, IMHO, they did not affect the outcome of the game. Stand your ground Agent2Be.

Now .. anyone want to talk about the glory days of the Steelers, back in the 70s when they competed against the Cowboys???

Besides .. Sly's county is the Houston Texans ... anyone remember how they did this past season. Their greatest accomplishment .. first in line at this year's draft!!

NFL concerned with perception of officiating
NEW YORK (AP) - The NFL is satisfied with its officiating but concerned that high-profile errors in the playoffs and Super Bowl left a bad impression.

So beginning next week at league meetings in Orlando, Fla., it will tweak a few rules, dealing mostly with player safety, offensive holding and false starts.

"Because of the magnitude of the games, there's an indictment of the system," Atlanta general manager Rich McKay, co-chairman of the league's competition committee, said Wednesday during a conference call.

The main topic will be the first steps in choosing a successor to Paul Tagliabue. The commissioner will appoint a committee Monday to begin the process.

McKay, a leading candidate, dodged several questions on that subject. Instead, he spent most of his time discussing officiating, as did his committee during meetings the past month in Indianapolis and Naples, Fla.

In the 256 games during the past regular season, there were 850 false-start calls. To cut that number, the committee is ready to recommend that minor flinches by wide receivers be ignored if they have no effect on the play.

The committee also is considering recommending to officials that they make sure there was holding on a play before throwing a flag.

"We want to make sure they actually see the foul," McKay said.

One such play occurred in the Super Bowl. Seattle right tackle Sean Locklear was called for holding on a pass completion early in the fourth quarter that would have put the Seahawks at the Pittsburgh 1-yard line, poised to go in for the tying touchdown. After the penalty, Seattle quarterback Matt Hasselbeck threw an interception and the Steelers eventually scored to take a 14-point lead.

The committee also wants to change the rule on hits by defenders below the knee on quarterbacks. McKay said defensive players will be told they must make an effort to avoid hitting QBs in the legs to avoid serious injuries, like the hit on Cincinnati's Carson Palmer against the Steelers in the playoffs.

Another recommendation expands the rule put in place last year against "horse collar" tackles. That violation mandated flags only when a defensive player coming from behind got his hands inside the shoulder pads of a player with the ball. If it is expanded, it would extend that to tackles inside the shirt.

The committee also is considering an annual proposal from the Kansas City Chiefs to expand the playoffs from 12 to 14 teams. He said there was more interest in it this year, although he stopped short of saying the committee would recommend it.

In addition to McKay, the committee includes coach Jeff Fisher of Tennessee, the co-chairman; general managers Ozzie Newsome of Baltimore; Bill Polian of Indianapolis; and executives John Mara of the New York Giants and Mark Richardson of Carolina. Coach Marvin Lewis of Cincinnati is a nonvoting member.
