First the good news ... it appears the details are being worked out to have every home game carried live on the Liberty Channel (and consequently WDRL) this fall. This is a tremendous step forward for the program that is long overdue. It will also be a great recruiting tool for the staff.

As for the bad news, Dennis Carter has been tabbed for the broadcast team. I'm not kidding. Get ready for more mangled names and nonchalance generally reserved for Division III games. I guess I'll have to get two media players running simultaneously to run Jerry Edwards audio with the volume turned down on the video stream. Would it be that hard to get someone who actually gives up a rip about Liberty to be paid by the school to call the games?

Gosh...I feel bad for all of you guys that have to listen to that crap....I have never heard your work Sly, but don't you know enough people around here to help head up a Liberty sports department for tv???

Well DC was on the call for the greatest win in my 5 years at Liberty (LU vs VMI 2003)

That is nice that they are getting on TV though. I won't be able to TIVO it since I won't be a Lynchburger anymore by football season. I would love to do some sideline reporting for the games but I know no one considers me a football guy. I cut my TV teeth doing high school football in Fairfax County. I called games for such outstanding VT Hokies as Mike Ihmo and Eddie Royal. This is great for recruiting and for what should be the best season in LU football history! No pressure coach Rocoo

That was completely unnecessary. You do not want to go down this road, Foxy. I'm not kidding. :boxing

You are probably right. But let's just say I am very frustrated with his efforts (or lack thereof) in hoops. I think we can do much better. Incidentally where is Mike Tilley these days?

No matter how you stack it, its fantastic that we are putting this together. Having these dates lined up in advance, I'll bet we are able to pitch these games to some other networks and out-of-market local stations to carry as well.

I like Dennis. He might not be the "next level" but he is decent. I always felt that Jerry and Kim were the best football combo since I've been here. I don't care for the cheerleader types. I want someone who loves LU but appreciates good play by both teams and is honest about the situation. l

that is awesome that the games will be carried. it should help with recruiting i would figure and to get the LU name out into the roanoke and new river valleys where we have not had much coverage is a plus. i would have liked to see someone other than DC, but it is a start.

That's great news! We shouldn't let who the announcer is going to be get us down. This is a HUGE step in the right direction. Kids don't care much who's announcing, just that they're being seen on tv.

I just gotta get something to take it from the tv to the computer so I can make highlights for videos in the fall.

Nonchalance doesn't bother me in a play-by-play guy. In fact, I prefer it. All I want from play-by-play is first and ten and say it again. Let the color guy go cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs.

Carter is no Al Michaels and I'm sure he'd be the first to admit that. However, he's at least as good as Jerry Edwards and certainly as good as anybody else in this area. Secondly, Carter is an institution in Central Virginia and having his name recognition on a broadcast helps to bring in viewers -- or, at least, make them stop channel-surfing for a while -- who wouldn't ordinarily watch LU sports. Also, to say that Carter doesn't give a rip about Liberty is just ridiculous. The amount of airtime that he gave to football in the Karcher years was vastly disproportionate to the level of viewer interest, I'm sure. Considering how excurciatingly finite his time is on the nightly news -- even less when the anchors forget how to read (yes, I'm looking at you, Donna Harris; thank you for stuttering off to the Virgin Islands) -- I think that that says a lot more about how he regards LU sports than how he pronounces Giedrius Knysas.

Im ok with you defending all those points except one.......your crazy if you think more than 3 people are going to stop and watch Liberty Football because they recognize Dennis Carter.......that is so crazy i can't even believe you said it.

Sly, it's not that I don't believe you, but where the heck did you find this out? It's not posted on any of the school sites.

Covering a live event, yes they will. Not all, but significantly more than someone that nobody recognizes. High school coaches in this area love DC. They'll stop and watch. High school athletes who've seen Carter at their events will stop and watch -- assuming 'Road Rules' isn't airing on another channel at the same time, of course. Having Carter connected also gives a little boost to recruiting local kids b/c people who don't know anything about Liberty, still know him.

Who is Dennis' color commentator? I am assuming it is Ray Jones. Ray coaches football at LCA and he knows the game. I think they will be fine. They may need a 3rd guy in the booth though  Anybody know anyone?....Ok, ITS MEEEEEE!!!!
