Not too far off of 501 North, near Big Island (about a 30 minute drive from Lynchburg). One of the most beautiful locations around, with mountains everywhere, and the band mentioned is a bluegrass band of teenage kids.

Disappointed there's no beef being offered up. But I love the BBQ festivals down here in Texas so I'd be up for it if I was in Central Virginia.

Perhaps you guys could pick up a few tricks and maybe some sauce four tailgates.

I did not go last year, so I'm not entirely sure. However, I did go to the James River BBQ Festival downtown last year. They had a pretty nice variety, but you had to pay to get in and pay to eat. Kinda pricey.

I'm going with a big group of friends tomorrow. I'll definitely report back after the trip.

I hate that they've scheduled this when I'm working. It would be a great excuse to drive out to Sedalia.

I usually take a back way, through Forest.

The closest we have to East NC BBQ in the greater Lynchburg area is the Silver Pig Restaurant in Madison Heights. :pig :tailgate :pig

We've beaten this dead horse. :beatinghorse

Suffice it to say there is a difference of opinions on what quantifies the best.

Yeah, I've been there. They serve Western North Carolina style. Slight difference. You've gotta go to Wilbur's, Parker's, or Bill's. Smithfield's can hold you over in case you can't get to the good guys.

However, during one of the July 4 festivals at LU, a guy was selling "Eastern North Carolina Style" bbq. I gave it a shot, & it was perfect. He said he learned from Bill's in Wilson. I still can't find that guy to this day. Finally, someone in VA that knows how to do it & I can't track him down.

Can someone give me a short answer as to what's the difference between western vs. eastern NC barbeque?

http://www.northcarolina.com/stories/bbq.html

Excerpt:
"A word here about the sauce. There are two different styles of North Carolina Barbecue, Eastern and Western. In both cases the sauce is a vinegar-based concoction, heavily seasoned; the largest difference is that the Western, or Lexington style of barbecue adds a small amount of tomato-base to the sauce, and also roasts pork shoulders in preference to the whole hog. That's it. That's the difference. Yet these tiny differences have caused near blood feuds between proponents of the two different styles. In both cases the vinegar base is augmented by a variety of secret herbs and spices – some favorites are salt, pepper, red pepper, cayenne pepper, onion powder, garlic, nutmeg, molasses, whiskey, and brown sugar. The specific potion is often a closely held secret, or varies depending on the ingredients at hand, but the sauce is thin, unlike most commercial tomato-based barbecue sauces. No roaster in their right mind would put that sweet, ketchupy stuff on a perfectly good pig."

Yep. That's pretty much it.

Hit up Allen & Son's in Pittsboro, NC if you're ever in the area. It's my hometown Q shack, and still one of my favorites.

I thought I'd revive this thread a year later, since it's now time for the 3rd Annual BBQ Festival at Sedalia (off of 501 North, near Big Island). I've never been, but Fumble went last year and had high praise for the food. For $12 (in advance) or $15 (at the door) you can sample BBQ all afternoon on Saturday, beginning at 12:00 noon.

I spent about 2 hours eating BBQ pork and listening to a live country music band at Sedalia yesterday. For $15, I got all the BBQ that I could eat, served in individual 2 ounce plastic cups: that didn't sound like much until I realized that there were 18 vendors. If each vendor served 2 ounces of BBQ, then 18 vendors would serve over 2 POUNDS of BBQ.

Only 2 vendors had really bad BBQ--one was actually beef brisket that tasted like dog food, and the other was white soupy looking pork like what Food Lion sells. All the rest were "pulled pork" served with a variety of vinegar-based sauces.

If anyone is still in town next summer, I certainly recommend Sedalia's BBQ festival.

Some of those BBQ :pig vendors had some pretty creative names:

Butt Smokers
Bunk's Bar, Grill, & Laudromat
Swine & Company
The Pig's Ear
The Real Squeal
