Am I alone in thinking that next years squad could win more big games than last seasons team? The guys coming in plus Taj, MJ and Gaynor are worth being very excited about.

I always check this site before I head to work (between 7:00 and 7:30), so it was purely coincidence...didn't have time to respond though...

I'll predict this...Winthrop won't be as good this next year as they were last year (ie. be nationally ranked at the end of the year). But I think the team can definitely still win the Big South and be very good again this next season. If Gaynor wasn't going to be back, I'd be a little more worried, but having a very good, experienced point guard that knows how to win will make this transition out of the 'Marshall Era' much easier than you guys expect. Also, I think Taj McCullough will have a huge year...But there are some unknowns, I'll concede that, and alot will depend on how well new/redshirt guys like Byron Faison, Rainer Blickle, and Andy Buechert are able to step in and contribute. I'm definitely excited about next year's team, though the claim by that original WU poster that this year's team will win more big games than last year's team is definitely a bit premature.

Pretty much echoes my opinion. Will be very tough to win that many games/be nationally ranked/win a tournament game, but I don't think the cupboard is bare by any means. I expect the team to win the conference again, and make some noise against the big boys as well.

I think that was the point of the chuckles. Nobody thinks WU is going to drop to the cellar of the Big South anytime soon. But last year's squad was special with T-Mart & Bradshaw culminated their sparkling careers together for the Eagles. With or without GM, I expected the Eagles to drop back to the pack a bit. Now whether or not somebody will step up & challenge is yet to be determined. Although a landscaper we all know & love would probably have a suggestion for who that might be.

I'd say VMI is probably the most well-known school in the Big South, but not because of sports. Liberty comes in second, but also not because of sports. In terms of sports, I'd say Winthrop is the most well-known school in the Big South, hands down.

I don't know if I agree with the 'hands down' part, but I don't see why I'd call it 'loony'...Having front-page stories in Sporting News and the USAToday Sports Section in the past year are pretty high-profile for the athletic program. Accomplishments such as Coastal's golf performance and LU's track performance are better than any Winthrop team has ever done in a national tourney setting, but beyond the niche crowd that follows those sports, it isn't very well known to the average sports fan. So while I won't say Winthrop's accomplishments have been necessarily better than anyone else's in the conference as a whole, I don't think saying that WU is the most well-known school in the Big South based on sports right now is out of line.

As much as I hate Winthrop I'd have to agree with WEF. We have Ritchie McKay as the poster boy of collegeinsider.com, but they've been in the tourney how many times in the past 10 years and have been past the first round?

Most people who don't go to Liberty don't even realize that we have a football team (hopefully that's changing with our recent success and success to come), so while Big South is not really known for it's football and nobody really cares about track and quiz bowl, Winthrop is the face of the Big South.

But you gotta love Jeff Barber: "It's our turn to be the Winthrop of this conference."

YES : I am aware its the FCS, not the FBS; but for the millions of football fans out there- I will stand firm on the fact that LU and CCU are FAR AND AWAY more commonly known than HPU, WU, RadfUrd or any other college that only competes in SOME of the major NCAA sports.

(then again, you're a hoops guy- so I'm pretty sure you and I will have to agree to disagree.)

Bottom line:

• hoops guys laugh at FCS football
  FB guys get thru hoops season to get to Spring FB

The thread on the Winthrop board is who is more well known for sports in the conference and I think WU is by far and away. We're not talking about strength of the league, although you'll find football is actually on the same plane as basketball strength wise when you factor in that they're not even competing at the top level. If you add in the BCS schools, the rankings would match up.

But that isn't really even relevant. The thread on the WU board was about who is more well known for sports. Nothing compares to getting press in March Madness, and doing it repeatedly. The disparity of press and who pays attention to March Madness exceeds any other sport in the league combined. I-AA football isn't in the national spotlight, it would take winning the national championship for a couple of years like APP to match the press WU has generated from March Madness.

As for Big South schools, WU is pretty commonly known throughout the country for basketball. It comes from covers of the sporting news, USA Today sports section, and hundreds of other national articles, tv spots, etc. While there are other programs of excellence in other sports in the Big South, they just don't generate much attention on the national level--i.e. golf at CCU, cross country and LU with your amazing runner.
