If roundball is your blood, this is the place to discuss the Flames as they move into the Ritchie McKay era for the 2nd time.

From today's Lynchburg N&A:
But the wingspan may be very attractive to new Flames basketball coach Ritchie McKay. Redd played basketball at Virginia in 2004. Redd is on course to graduate in December and he would still have a season of basketball eligibility. "I love basketball," Redd said. "It just depends on how everything goes. Hopefully it will work out and I'll be able to play ball."

It sounds like he would like to play some hoops his senior year, but this is going to come down to how it will effect his NFL prospects. If he were a tight end, I think the pros would like to see what he could do on the court, because of the success of Gonzales and Gates. As a LB I'm not so sure.

There was rumor of him playing this past year so I don't know if he is or not.

Well, at 280lbs, there's only one position that he could play, and that would be center.

I'd imagine, that he'd really add depth, toughness, and physicality to that position.

There have been other football players that played hoops to play other positions recently as well. Matt Trannon at Michigan St was a wide out I believe (he may have been a tight end though). Jason Peppers played DE and was a great power forward for UNC a few years back. Even at Linebacker, pro scouts love good athletes that can hoop. That means they can run and jump and are pretty agile. If it is good for Liberty basketball, I hope he plays.

Why is center the only position he could play? He's not some fat, immobile guy out there. Dude can flat out move and 6'6" isn't all that tall to be a center.

Maybe Lib can answer this, but how tall is the crossbar on a goalpost? I've heard that Redd at practice has "dunked" a football over the crossbar! All, I know if that's higher than 10'.

The crossbar is 10 feet off the ground. (Rule 1, Article 5.a)

Goalposts are 10' off the ground. However, if a player is jumping on grass turf with cleats or with full pads on, it is more significant than dunking a basketball. There should be no surprise that a 6'6" athlete (regardless of weight) can dunk a basketball.

Not to say that this guy doesn't have great athletic ability, but it's not really anything special to be able to dunk on the goalpost because it's not like basketball where your forearm has to be above the rim and then you throw it down...with the goalpost you just get your arm that high then almost through the ball over.

But, the goalpost is significantly thicker than a basketball rim. You have to get up that much higher.

Thanks Lib, et. al. Still an impressive enough definition of his athletic ability. And I agree with Lib. Just because he's 280 does NOT mean has HAS to play center. Would you take a charge from a driving small forward who weighs 280 pounds?!

I'm willing to bet most others in the Big South wouldn't either. GET OUT OF THE WAY!!!

If Redd even plays, he'll definetly be a post player. Let's just leave it at that :)

I wonder if SCAR could dunk over a football goal post? He may have to put on a pre-game exhibition. Better yet, that could be a pre-game tailgating activity--everyone who can dunk over a goalpost gets a free cup of sweet cider.

The only dunking going on there will be the doughnuts INTO the cider

Between Redd and Ace, we'd certaintly have some beef down low. If teams would want to throw it in the post, it's not going to be an easy bucket.

I certainly would not go inside knowing that he has 5 fouls to give me.

I dunked a basketball one time, but it wasn't too hard considering I was using a trampoline. :D

I always thought the goal posts were only 9 feet off the ground. Yes I can dunk a football over a goal post (I think?) but it is significantly thicker than a rim as Lib suggests. And yes this stuff does in deed matter 8). Jason Peppers? What was I thinking. I think I was thinking of Jason Capel and Julius Peppers. Thanks for catching that one Lib...No way Redd could play the 3 in the big south unless he is the quickest 280 pounder you ever saw. 3's in the big south are very fast and he would have a hard time guarding any of them off the dribble. Same reason Baker doesn't play much at the 3. Redd would be a great power forward at his size I think.
