I did that last year and other people got offended because the team had all those interceptions and therefore equals to a great defensive team. But you are correct, the defense is about the same a last year. If this is what they are showing against an FCS Campbell, it is going to be a nail biting games the entire season.
Who on this board ever said the defense last year was great??? Please show me these posts.

I'll wait.

Agree.. nothing to speak highly of for the defense in this game (way too easy at times for Campbell to score). Hopefully, some fine-tuning will make a difference. It looks like most of the teams in C-USA got plastered today, which also doesn't help our cause.

Too far back from last December. I mentioned about last year’s defense was terrible. People kept bringing up all the interceptions and thus the team has great defense. I will need to go back and find it.

I don’t recall anyone saying the D was great. It’s an all or nothing scheme. Either get torched for TDs or get a few INT’s.

Same issue, very little push by D Line - keep our corners in man and stressed every play. We do show much more speed at 2nd level. 3 big plays - 2 were weird where receiver almost went down and spun out - our guys were flying to him - That’s football. Not sure what happened on the busted run play. Other than that - I thought D looked decent and at least knew where they were supposed to be - tackled pretty well for game 1. other than the personal foul stuff - not going to harp. Last drive was a fiasco of penalties vs back ups.

Nobody said our defense was great last year. Maybe people pushed back on your assessment that they were terrible but that doesn't equate greatness.

This defense, so far, has the same weaknesses as last year's.

But neither side of the ball showed much effort this week. That, combined with the penalties, Is going to make for a tough week for these guys. Rightfully so.

Schematically I think we were vanilla on both sides of the ball. There were very few deep balls thrown and defensively we showed the same look for a majority of the game. I suspect we will see a very different team next week. An away conference game against an opponent whose players have been taunting our QB during the off season, combined with a week of practice with Coach Chadwell demanding a higher level of performance on several fronts, in my opinion, will result in a top tier convincing victory.

Announced attendance for this game was 21,573. The louisiana tech game last year was the only one that had a higher attendance and this game was about 100 fans less than our first home game against a P5 (syracuse). That's crazy to think about but this is more proof attendance tends to lag a season behind results.

I don't think that game told us a whole lot about our team except it's a work in progress early on. The next two games will offer a glimpse into the rest of the season imho. I had just a few observations from the game:

1) The play calling for Salter was too run heavy. He's a special player, but we can't have him taking shots the way he was all game and expect to have him healthy in December when we really need him. I was also surprised that throughout the majority of the first half, all of our pass plays were quick throws to the perimeter. Those are the sort of plays you call when you have a young/inexperienced QB that you're trying to settle down. The Salter --> Canion throw looked a tad bit reminiscent to the Salter --> CJ connection. Still too early, but hopefully we see that continue to blossom.

2) The defense rotated A LOT of guys through. Schematically, it did look very vanilla, but we were vanilla all last season as well. I'm hoping that changes some. I was disappointed in the DLine not getting a sack, but they had a dual threat QB and he did well getting the ball out of his hands quick. I think we're going to see that a lot this year. The key will be for us to put pressure on teams earlier in the game and force them to throw the ball down the field more, which will hopefully allow our guys to tee off a bit more. Time will tell though.

3) The student side was great and has been for a few years now. The old folks side (where I'm at) has been showing more signs of life too. My only gripe is with the cheerleaders getting the students to start chants or do the wave when we have the ball on Offense. I know we're a bit young as a football school, but someone needs to tell them to save their voices for when we're on defense.

I read our season ticket sales were "2nd" highest ever this season. I figure midweek games didn't help.

We need higher attendance.

I agree. Every home game should be a sell-out, regardless of opponent.

I predict the East Carolina game will set a new attendance record at LU, if weather is good.

Midweek does affect attendance, especially out of towners who would normally travel to 2-3 games per year.

I’m hopeful the ECU game is a big attendance. But I’m scared their program being on a downswing will limit their fans’ travel.

I'm hoping that too. Because after ECU, there are no home Saturday games until Nov. 23 vs Western Kentucky (which, I think is after students are on Thanksgiving break).

So, for those of us that live far away, this is kind of the obvious "I better get to this one because it doesn't look feasible to go to anything after that" game. I've had it circled ever since the schedule came out.

Actually I believe the students are still on campus for WKU. The Flames are down here in Texas over Thanksgiving break.

The ECU & WKU games are undoubtedly the marquee games for potential big attendance numbers.
