I think one thing that gets missed when comparing TV markets is UConn’s footprint in NYC. They’re probably the most popular basketball team in the city, maybe a close second to St. John’s, but they haven’t been relevant for a long time.
Syracuse on Line 1.

Don’t care about geography unless it affects. Syracuse marketed itself as NYC’s College Team for years, and it worked. They’re no more #3 than UCONN is #2.

Syracuse has 55k alumni in the city.
UCan’t has 25k

That’s just a start.

Other than Penn State, college football north of the Mason Dixon Line does not move the needle very much. This was proven when Syracuse played at Liberty, and the game wasn't a sellout , and Syracuse brought only a few fans to Lynchburg.

The fact you just compared Syracuse to Penn State just underscores your lack of credibility
Ohio State. Notre Dame and Michigan move the needle. Especially in terms of $$$ and NFL players

Syracuse brought a decent number of fans to the Burg, and they've always had the loud vocal minority at the Wake games I've been to. The lack of a sellout at the Bill vs. the #24 Orangemen was on Liberty fans not SU. Just as we didn't pack out for Tech & if not for the Mormons, we wouldn't of packed out for BYU. Our turnout was somewhat disappointing vs. all 3 teams. Fortunately, we're a growing fanbase and we're slowly getting better. So I think we'd have better crowds for our next P5 home games. Of course, the midweek games scare me in regards of local & regional fanbase, as they're counterproductive.

Syracuse is definitely one of the better brands in the NE. They haven't been comparable to Penn State since Pasqaloni was the HC and it'll be a while, if ever, til they regain their old status.

That was Daryl Gross' brainchild that never really worked, despite the number of SU Alumni. IMO he really hurt the brand, firing Pasquloni and hiring Gregg Robinson, robbing the local fan base of home games vs. Notre Dame & USC in football & homegames in MBB, and changing the nickname to just "The Orange." IMO, they all hurt the brand and local fanbase.

So you think trying to tap the NYC market was a mistake, too?

Or, are you saying it would’ve worked better had the other things not hurt the brand so much?

PH mentioned some. I would add BYU, Oregon and a Washington to the list of teams above the mason dixon that move the needle.

They may not move your needle. But you’d need three Cialis to move your needle, so….

Fixed it for you. All you had to do was be slightly more specific to make it true. The midwest loves cfb AND the NFL but the north east can't really be bothered by anything that isn't the NFL. The two regions really don't have much in common.

Nothing hurts worse than losing and I put the blame on football on Gross. G-Rob was awful. but putting your marquee games in the Meadowlands really hurt as well. Home MBB games at MSG probably didn't hurt as much, but they still didn't help. So yes, it hurt the local and regional fanbase that buys tickets and attends games, but especially cause it didn't work.

Not saying that it will be above board, but Pitino will have St. Johns buzzing on Broadway in no time flat. But college sports in NYC might as well be competitive crocheting. Very few at all care even at the schools they are attending.

Army can go to any G5 league they like at any time. I highly doubt they would choose CUSA.

As for UConn & UMass, those would only be for football. And neither of those schools has much to offer. Yes, I am aware of this brief Jim Mora Jr. blip on the radar.

I am still a bit miffed that we brought in Kennesaw. Nine would have been fine. There is zero value in two more. CUSA already has a new media deal in place.

Would Delaware be a fantastic addition? Absolutely. But they have shown little interest in joining a G5 league even as the CAA crumbles around them. Nobody else really moves the needle.

As for the potential of CUSA 4.0 members to be plucked away any time soon:

  • FIU - As long as they have that huge enrollment and location in Miami, they will remain a possibility for a league like the AAC even with their totally inept athletic department.
  • Jacksonville State - They will forever be mentioned as a Sun Belt candidate. But there are way too many teams from Alabama in that league already. So they will be here for awhile.
  • Kennesaw State - They fit the Sun Belt profile and could possibly be a replacement if Georgia State gets an AAC invitation.
  • Liberty - The only leagues where there is any reasonable possibility of moving up are the AAC and a new eastern extension of the MWC. Neither is likely in the short term.
  • Louisiana Tech - They would be a likely candidate for the Sun Belt if that league had defections in spite of the longtime hard feelings. Otherwise they would be a long shot to return to the MWC.
  • MTSU - They seem to be in an AAC or Bust mode. As long as they sit in the Nashville market, they will remain a candidate there.
  • NM State - They are perhaps the most likely to be sticking around CUSA of all the schools. The only other league geographically that works is the MWC. And they already have UNM and wouldn't need two schools in El Paso market.
  • Sam Houston State - If the Mountain West loses a couple of schools and wants to reload, they could come in play.
  • UTEP - They are firmly on the Mountain west's radar and would likely be one of their top candidates to reach back into Texas along with Texas State ... or Sam.
  • WKU - They remain on the radar of the Sun Belt and the MAC.

A little food for thought had LU stayed Independent and partnered with SCRIPPS vs CUSA. Which scenario gets LU a P5 offer first ? ( I am neutral and can argue either way- am actually a big fan of ESPN+) but still loathe G5 even if there is a “path” to occasional playoff berth. I think the model is broken and SCRIPPS has the perfect solution and reach ( near term ) for the broken ( overplayed long term contract Cable and unproven - but wave of the future )Streaming models. Neither side has opted for “partnership model” - less guaranty $ vs “shared wealth if it exceeds minimal baseline”. Apple offered that to PAC 12 and they couldn’t stomach...imagine LU loading up as an early adapter for Big 5 sports across all of SCRIPPS platforms and using LU programming vs needing SCRIPPS to step on production costs...fast forward a few minute on video for interview with CEO.

CUSA was previously on stadium and people complained about it. Isn't that essentially the same business model or is this different somehow? I think part of the problem stemmed from Stadium selling the rights for several CUSA games to Facebook.

Minute 14 and change - graph of ESPN + subscribers went from 1 million in 2018 to 25 million in 2023. So where is the ad revenue ? Back to my original complaint/question - ESPN + has really dropped the ball on local/national advertising - (LU for example has a fade away with “ commercial in progress” with an occasional Local Jeep commercial with Bigfoot or Foster Farm Fuels - but mostly dead air. Same thing happened on OU ( 1 game they had on ESPN + and fans lost their mind when they didn’t realize until last minute they had to subscribe to ESPN + ). Epic eyeball grab in 5 years with a complete fail on securing local national ad space / revenue.
