MALZAHN FIRED BY AUBURN, FREEZE A LEADING CANDIDATE ACCORDING TO MULTIPLE REPORTS
By: Jon Manson

Auburn head football coach Gus Malzahn was fired, the school announced Sunday. The decision comes less than 24 hours after the Tigers finished the regular season with a 6-4 record after beating Mississippi State, 24-10, on Saturday. Malzahn finished with a record of 68-34 in his 8 seasons at Auburn. He is owed $21.7 million.

According to multiple media reports immediately following the job coming open, Liberty head coach Hugh Freeze is not only a candidate, but perhaps the leading candidate. According to Outkick, Freeze “is the leading candidate to replace Gus Malzahn at Auburn.” Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports reports that Freeze “is expected to be the top candidate” at Auburn.

Hugh Freeze is 17-6 in his two seasons at Liberty, including a program best 8-0 mark to begin the 2020 season before the Flames finished the regular season at 9-1. The Flames have also been ranked in both major college football polls for the first time in school history this season. Liberty is currently No. 21 in the Coaches Top 25 Poll and No. 22 in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll.

My phone has been ringing constantly for the pass 17 hours, people wanting me to weigh in on Auburn job.

My "sources" tell me that Coach Freeze will not be taking Auburn job.

I thought you were too busy with softball and the Bowl situation and promised not to comment on this? Typical Liberal, can’t believe a word they say

If the rumors of SEC black balling coach are true, then we’ll truly have HF as long as we want. SEC I believe is the only conference that could lure him away. You can win a national championship in other conferences obviously but I think his biggest desire is SEC. So if that’s off the table then we may have nothing to worry about.

I think Hugh freeze is great, what he's done at liberty is incredible, to be ranked this early into FBS entry is unthinkable. He's going to be in demand. That said I don't think Auburn will hire him, he's basically Gus Malzahn 2.0 and I mean that in a good way. They are both offensive geniuses and high tempo, both great recruiters, etc. I don't think you fire a coach and hire someone else who is a spitting image of the coach you just fired. You usually go from offensive minded to defensive minded, or from someone who is mellow and stable to someone who is high energy, or experienced to young up and coming. You usually go opposite of what you had because what you had wasn't getting it done

Supposedly Sankey gave South Carolina the green light to hire Freeze if it got to that point.

The Fighting Illini fired Lovie Smith.
HF would never leave Liberty for the football wasteland in Champaign, IL
Not sure what it will take to turn around Illinois football. It's just bad. No tradition.

Would be great to see Lovie come to LU in some position ie. assistant coach. Solid Christian, fantastic person.

Ummm not to be that guy but we all may want to brace ourselves. Hopefully rumors are just that, rumors. Liberty is notorious for rumors and I don't claim to have any real #sources. Just water cooler talk.

Football Scoop has given the latest buzz on the Auburn situation and it is sounding like Mario Cristobal is the clear frontrunner at this stage:
Football Scoop wrote:Multiple industry sources told FootballScoop.com that Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal is firmly at or near the top of the Tigers’ wish-list. Cristobal’s a Miami, Florida, native who played at ‘The U’ and later coached there, as well as on Nick Saban’s Alabama staff. He’s highly regarded for his organizational skills, program development and recruiting. He’s helped Oregon raid California in its recruiting efforts since he joined the Ducks’ staff in 2017 and ascended to the head coach role after the 2017 season.

However, sources indicated Oregon likewise had engaged Cristobal in discussions to keep him in Eugene, Oregon, and to not only revamp Cristobal’s deal but also to make other commitments, including assistant coaches’ salary pool. The thinking out West is that Crisotbal is likely to remain in Eugene. However, the folks out West might not understand just how much Auburn is willing to invest to win.

Coach Freeze is mentioned among the usual suspects of candidates (Sark, Napier, Kiffin, Steele) we all keep hearing about the past day or so.

Totally Random Mention to ppst above: The Voice of the Illini was a friend of mine back in our LU days together.

Being a diehard Flame and Bama fan, IF Freeze were to go to the Barnyard that is Auburn I would hate it! Will Freeze win at Auburn? Yes. How quick? Next year quick. How soon will he beat Bama? Within 2 years. Why do I believe that? It took him 3 years to beat Saban and then he did it again a year later at Ole Miss. Auburn is a light years better program than Ole Miss was when Freeze took over. Oh, they should've beat Bama his last year there too. All in all, he is 2-3 against Nick Saban. As much as I hate to say it, Auburn is one of the 3 jobs I thought he would leave for and as much I would hate for him to go to that crap school, I would not be upset if he went there because I understand the draw of Auburn strictly from a coaching profession standpoint.

Fraudcoach’s sources say he’s staying. Which would normally lead on to believe he is gone.
If this was 2 years from now, I would say let’s plan a big Thank You send off party. But this year? I dunno. But if he doesn’t take the Auburn job if offered it’s going to be several years before he can again.

If HF doesn't take Auburn (if offered, of course) then this is likely what he's waiting on even if it means hanging out here another year or two.

Cristobal is the clear leader in the clubhouse. This is following the exact path as south carolina and others.

Media speculates freeze to sec
Job opens
Media put freeze at top of list
Hes mentioned briefly but not a finalist

Almost seems like there may be an agreement among AD’s to keep him out. Assuming sankey is no longer blocking. Interesting stuff.

Id love to be a recruit right now and ask that question. I believe hchf would be honest. I think we will see how good his answer is wednesday by how many sign. If it appears publically hes still flirting with auburn even if not true it would have a big impact.

Selfishly i hope they keep him blocked forevee :D

Yep. The jobs I think are best (not in any order, except for Bama) - Bama, LSU, A&M, UGA, UF, UT

The only one of those likely to be open soon - UT

UT has a lot to offer. They have had lean years, but the infrastructure and history is there.

edit: I'd probably have Auburn just after that grouping. the only knock on Auburn is that you will always the second most important team in your own state.
