What a great race! The Lord's hand was upon this team.

To finish the last race and make it into the playoffs under such pressure is incredible. To get your first Cup win at Daytona under those circumstances is amazing. To get your first Cup win under those circumstances in a car with Liberty University as the main sponsor this week, given the recent chaos, is a miracle! Praise God!

This is tremendous advertising for LU, which desperately needed a PR win as well. Must win by William Byron. Almost, a must win for LU.

I hope Liberty's leaders realize the value of a Nascar sponsorship and will continue it for years to come. William is just 22 years old. Amazing! If he stays healthy, he should see many more wins to come.

What an incredible night! God's timing is perfect!

Excellent post Kiwon.

2nd biggest win in LU history. Cure Bowl still 1st. It was even better with Liberty being primary sponsor this week.

Fifty miles to go and running low on faith and gasoline
It'd been a long hard year
Jesus take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this on my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
Save me from this road I'm on
Oh, Jesus take the wheel

Oh, take it, take it from me

That song popped in my head as I watched the last 20 laps. If you missed it it's worth watching. You'll know what I mean.

This vid doesn't show it up close, but one of the wrecks he couldn't have gotten through on his own. He's pretty good but not that good. I think he just let go of the wheel

Still pumped about William Byron's first win.

If you've been following him this year, you know that he had his worst performance a week ago Saturday finishing 28th and dropped out of the playoff points top grouping. His team did some soul searching and they responded the next day with a solid 4th place finish, his first top five finish all year. They were down and they answered the bell impressively and got enough points to put him right at the playoff points cut-off line and gave himself a shot to run well at Daytona and into the playoffs.

At Daytona, he finished the first stage in the top ten, but outside the top ten at the second stage. That left the third and final stage to make or break his season. Toward the end, he was running near the lead but made the call to come in and get four new tires. It was a gamble to give up track position but the hope was that his new tires would be a difference maker versus the other cars on older tires.

The tires helped, but the real difference maker was his driving ability. He somehow avoided being swept up in a massive wreck with 8 laps to go, and then with 3 laps left, he showed his grit to squeeze between the two cars directly in front of him that had just made contact with each other. As he said, "At that point, I wasn't lifting." Man, either he was going to get clear or he was going to be involved in one gigantic wreck. That's guts.

On the restart, he outdueled a real pro in Martin Truex, Jr. and earned......I mean, earned, his first victory.

He's a class act and always showed great respect for his teammate, Jimmie Johnson, who is retiring and twice his age. Besides having the LU logo on the winning car, having Liberty's branding on the driver's uniform of a solid young man like William Byron is inspiring.

I've heard Liberty's commitment for nascar is $6-8 million a year. I'm not a nascar fan and wonder if this is a good investment for the school. I know Jr was close to the owners and sounds like he got a few kick backs. Just wonder if this is something Liberty will continue to invest in?

I hope Liberty continues the sponsorship. It is excellent PR and advertising, even if NASCAR viewers have declined.

I think it is in the grand scheme of things. Although to be a true World Leading University they should look at F1! :D
Mercedes is dominating. Ferrari is struggling. But I’m positive McLaren and Williams and possibly Racing Point would be eager to have another sponsor! Think GLOBAL. Study

Yes for national recognition but also would be good investment for the school of engineering when it's built. Students can invest and research with car parts which can coordinate with other projects. Rise in mechanical engineering anyone?

Purple you got the global part right. You might be the only F1 fan in America.

I went to German Grand Prix once. There was one pass the entire race, and that was for 6th or 7th place, if I remember correctly. Happened on lap 1.

This is the first year I’ve really gotten into it. We’ve watched the Monte Carlo race the last several years. The Netflix Docuseries turned me on to it. Qualifying is really ingenious. How they have competition 1-10 gives every race something fun to watch. The audience is certainly larger. I’m pretty hooked on it now

I have worked with the F1 teams from the sponsor side for about a decade. For awhile I was really into the action particularly during the shortlived IMS stops especially in the latter Schumacher years when he was dueling Hamilton before retirement. I have been angling for a sponsor pass to the races in Austin the past few years and haven't been able to score any yet at COTA in Austin. I was flying through Austin during race week a couple of years ago and the lines of private jets from Europe at the airport were incredible.

I have always enjoyed open wheel and miss the glory days of CART before Tony George destroyed the sport through his greed. AJ Foyt lives near me on his massive horse ranch and his garage for his IndyCar team is nearby as well. A full Brickyard is the most awe-inspiring spectacle in sports.

As for William, I'd love to see him go on a nice run during the playoffs to make our sponsorships bring their full value. Last night was incredible.

On our European Vacation next year we are overnight in Monte Carlo. I’m definitely hitting the Casino...cause James Bond. But the highlight will be the Grand Prix Historique. I guess being from Indiana gravitating to F1 isn’t a stretch. And AJ Foyt is a LEGEND in Indiana

Serious rabbit trail here ... I had a chance to have lunch with AJ a few years ago with some other media types. For years my grandmother used to tell me about the duels between AJ and her brother Hector Honore's Bardahl Special sprint car referred to at the time as the Black Deuce.

Image

This car is in the Guiness Book of World Records as the winningest race car in history. Normally I would only have time to interview AJ before or after a race. But since we had some social time at this lunch I mentioned my Great Uncle Hector to him. He swung his head around quickly and proceeded to go on a rant about what a pain in the neck Uncle Hectror was to race against. He regaled me with story after story of the old dirt track duels they had. I felt vindicated for my late grandmother who I had previously suspected had overblown the rivalry. I walked away from that lunch feeling like a part of racing royalty.

The race probably ended too late to get into the paper with a full story.

True, but they could have ran it in today's paper.
