I gave about 746 suggestions. But sure. Go ahead and have “Conversations”. Give money to Advocacy Groups. Raise Awareness. Do your 1 off things. I mean, golly, kneeling for the anthem was wildly successful. Putting SJW Sayings on your jerseys brought people together. Slogans on the floor? Kum-Freakin-Bye-Ya
Heaven forbid you actually use the platform to actually accomplish something. Maybe I’m just old and like to see crap actually get done instead of just talked about.

But they already do so much and yet it hasn't really changed a thing. That is the point!

I know you and I won't see eye to eye on this but it is frustrating because I know how much work a lot of these athletes do. In fact, NBA players are some of the most socially active pro athletes. They put their time and their money where their mouth is. They hope that they can continue to put pressure on ownership to be part of the solution. These ownership groups can get governments to fund their arenas so clearly the ownership groups know how to get things done in government. That is part of the reason this walk out happened . To get their attention apart from social media slogans.

I am sure part of this discussion is being lost because of the poltics behind it. I get that.

Totally agree that individuals do often do a lot in their community. We aren’t debating that I’m not taking anything away from those individual efforts. I’m talking about this Group Effort We agree that those get more attention than one dude putting a coat of paint on a building. (It’s an exaggeration. Lighten up :D ). . What they did last night was an exercise in futility and it could have been so much more. Instead they farted it away. But we are supposed to applaud them for their ‘courage”

As an aside I just turned on the tv and the first thing I heard was the talking head saying “several players were concerned about the impact to their pocketbooks if they boycotted the rest of the season”. Yeah....they seem dedicated

Well, I mean they are individuals so they are free to have different opinions. I would imagine there is a lot of opinions there which is why the players meeting was so heated last night. Grown men, especially athletes, tend to have huge egos and think their way is best ( look at us and we are just normal people).

I would have loved to be a fly on that wall to hear that heated discussion last night.

they are protesting without really disparaging the flag, they aren't burning anything down (not sure if any have condemned that behavior). like i said, if they understand the monetary implications have at it. no skin off my back.

I'd say good came from it:

2. In every city where the league franchise owns and controls the arena property, team governors will continue to work with local election officials to convert the facility into a voting location for the 2020 general election to allow for a safe in-person voting option for communities vulnerable to COVID. If a deadline has passed, team governors will work with local elections officials to find another election-related use for the facility, including but not limited to voter registration and ballot receiving boards.

3. The league will work with the players and our network partners to create and include advertising spots in each NBA playoff game dedicated to promoting greater civic engagement in national and local elections and raising awareness around voter access and opportunity.”

Also some teams have been on the phone with their local police departments to find out ways they can help each other towards making real change. It'll take time before we know if there was in real progress but it is a start.

#2 and #3 are a bunch of nothing quite frankly.
I do like the fact that they are working with local Police Departments to see what can be done to help. That’s going to produce the most tangible results

Making it more accessible for people to vote is pretty important, especially with current restrictions in place. #3 was already happening. I follow the Magic the closest and they had a zoom call scheduled this afternoon. It will be interesting to see what comes from it.

Agreed Jon.

If they open up the Arena in Orlando, I'd demand to cast my vote in the WWE Thunderdome current set up there for TV tapings (through October 31st for now sooooo). I mean check this place out

I chose this picture because the ones with virtual fans creep me out.

Ok. Sorry I am now way off topic.

Games start again tomorrow.

Better access to voting is great. What that has to do with the boycott I have no idea. Scores of places could be provided as polling places. But maybe they want to make it an event? Come vote and get your picture taken with an NBA player.
It’s something but wouldn’t have stopped anything they walked out on.

“Discuss Policing in the community “. Hey look a “Conversation!!
But I like you want to see what comes from it. I’m skeptical. I predict a lot of sizzle with no steak

Without this player strike, the owners would not have agreed to open their arenas as voting locations. Arenas will allow more voting booths in a way that’s socially distanced so people feel comfortable coming to vote in person. It also allows people to spend less time at the polls which increases access even more.

None of that happens if they players didn’t strike.

If that’s all the happens, it’s worth the one night of not playing.

That would be a good thing. Very arguably the first good thing to come from all this posturing.

An exercise in futility? Boy did this statement age more poorly than a 40-year-old who has been abusing alcohol, tobacco, and hard drugs on a daily basis since they were a teenager.

Closing polling places that largely negatively impact minorities is a widely known voter suppression tactic.

Just curious, why and how were polling places closed to begin with? Why weren't they using the same places/precincts they always have. Where I live, we have the same polling places in precincts all other the county; they've been voting locations for several years.
