I'll have to take your word for it. But how can we pat him on the back in that yet at the same time criticize the way he rules with an iron fist and alienating those who don't fall in line? Maybe that's an effective way to get a lot of money, fast. Maybe the ends don't justify the means.

thepostman wrote: June 2nd, 2020, 1:39 pm I partly agree with that and often think Sr isn't given enough credit for the wise decisions he made, especially towards the end of his life.

BUT, Jr was also working behind the scenes assisting in laying the foundation for our financial boom.
Sr's life insurance was a rounding error in today's budget. Even back then, it was not substantial enough to secure the future of the university. Just help it out of some immediate short-term needs. Macel got $5M of it and rightly so.
Sr. was an absolute genius, (literally). Without his vision, there would be no LU. He was more of a marketing guy not so much an execution person. Yes, Jr. was very helpful in putting out major financial and business fires, that was not Sr's strong suit.
Jr. should receive credit for putting the university on a sound financial footing. He should also receive credit for creating a spiritual wasteland, that is now the leadership void at LU. Sr. would be spinning in his grave at the present situation.

I definitely don't think the ends justify the means in this case.

Jon, we often see things similarly, but I would be wary of giving him too much credit. He was not the developer of the online cash cow, though he did pressure over it. The groundwork was laid before Jr was on the scene. I'd wager that any business person on this forum could do a dang good job using billions of dollars that students have borrowed and paid tuition with. What he had done that most might not be as successful at is develop the sports programs. That imho, is why a replacement would be difficult.

I think there are two competing things here:

1) Credit - I would say even if others could have had similar success, he should still get credit since he was the one to actually do it. I think that part is undeniable.

2) Impressiveness - I buy your argument that it might not be impressive because of the resources and groundwork laid. In my mind, I still find it impressive because of the sheer scope of it all. This is the part I’m good disagreeing on.

The Virginia governor has a questionable history with racism (his college blackface picture is prof). He has publically said he's in favor of aborting a baby's life even after it is born. Bloomburg bankrolled him into office with a mandate to go after your 2nd amendment. He publicly takes shots at Liberty every chance he gets. I can understand why Jerry wants to push back against his checkered past. Unfortunately Jr's timing was bad this time. But other than bad timing, the push back was justified.

Those are kinda pivotal qualifiers

I feel like I am a broken freaking record. This absolutely ZERO to do with feelings about the governor. It has to do with a string of actions and words that put the school in which he leads in a negative light. This isn't ONE thing but at some point there has to be a breaking point. Will this be it? Probably not because he Jerry has enough people around that believe this is about attacking a democratic governor. Sure, that may be the media's reasoning but it isn't mine, that is for sure. I think Virginia's Governor is terrible and I can understand why so many of you feel so strongly about him.

Thinking there will be a “breaking point” is going to lead you to a lot of frustration

Unfortunately, all the criticism will only lead to Jr. doubling and tripling down, since he apparently has no rational thought apart from what Trump would do in similar situations.

I say that as someone who will gladly vote for Trump in November.

How many signatures will it take on the petition to have any impact or does it even matter at all? It's now approaching 30,000 names. I am not an alumnus but have seen many friends who are that have signed it, so I know that actual Liberty alumni are signing it and not just random people.

I, who used to defend Falwell, even signed it. It comes down to the fact that LU could do so much better without him continually tarring our good name. What will it take to get him to go though? Is this a hostage situation? Does he just do what he wants with impunity?

It is a waste of time. I agree but I'm sure for different reasons. It won't change a thing no matter how many sign it. It will take several high profile alum to join together to even have a chance but even that may not change anything.

The textbook definition of a job made harder by the boss. I guess if one feels it’s been made impossible instead of just hard, resigning would be the only option.

No longer possible to stay and fix from within? Makes you wonder just how bad is it.

Personally, I don't see the resignation of a diversity officer a bad thing. It is usually a :BS job, especially in the corporate world. I am 100% for racial equality, opportunity, etc. I worked at a Fortune 500 company and promoted more minorities into management positions than anyone else in the huge company. But it was done 100% based on merit and not due to race, etc. On the other hand, I was forced to hire some minority candidates, that were clearly less qualified than other white candidates, due to race alone . Right now, I have a family member who is being denied an opportunity for a big promotion, 100%, because he is a white male.
I have always heard the "diversity is our strength" :BS for the last 20+ years. I have lots of examples where it is not, in my own personal experience. It sounds good I guess, but .............................. Your mileage may vary. To me, racial preference in any form, is racism. I miss the days when you actually had to earn a trophy, based on merit.
For the record, I do not defend Jr's comment at all. It was out of line, petulant and was harmful to the university.
