rtb72 wrote: May 7th, 2020, 9:12 pm C-USA would be a good place. Is it what we DREAM for....nope. But I think many are under the assumption that there are conferences beating down the door for LU. I love LU.....but we aren't that good yet. We don't have the ability to look at a large pool of conferences and "pick the best of several". What are we really waiting on...ACC....folks, you are dreaming. We can say we are P5 or whatever, we can "think" we deserve some big P5 conferene, SEC, ACC, etc, you name it. Reality is we should get ourselves established in a conference we can compete in, in a conference we can compete in, in a conference we can compete in..............................and do our work there from the ground floor. We need to get a grip on what LU is and what we are capable of right now, versus what we HOPE/THINK we are and are capable of. In time maybe/hopefully....

Oh, and one more thing.....GO Herd! :D
I'm not sure the majority of us are delusional enough to think we shouldn't settle for anything less than an ACC invite. I hope liberty can prove that we don't need conferences beating down our door for us to be successful. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the AAC is seen as probably our best case scenario in the near future but we aren't at that level yet.

C-usa or independent/asun I think we can and will be successful in all sports for the foreseeable future. Hopefully that translates eventually to an invite from a quality conference. As I've said before there's no predicting what cfb will look like 10-15 years from now.
The ASUN has already made overtures that LU is not welcome
I figured we would wear out our welcome somewhat quickly but are they looking to kick us out in the near future? It was obviously never the ideal fit.

I don't believe anyone is intereste din kicking us out. But our budget by itself could probably cover the rest of the league. I think you can understand their frustrations trying to compete.

hahaha...I figured the first part of my original post would get more reaction than the latter...but I guess that "Go Herd" didn't sit well with some. No worries. Gotta put some love to the herd since i got my post grad there. My heart is at LU though.

I’m so happy you’ve come to terms with The State of West Virginia’s Other College’s place in the World. It must be so liberating :D We in Morgantown only look with benevolence on our brethren to the South

Finally, another Marshall alumnus on our board! What years were you in Huntington? I was in grad school at Marshall from 1983-1985, and taught there for 3 semesters in Corbly Hall, right next to Old Main. That was maybe the 2 best years of my life.

I went back later in life. Wanted a new skills set for my retirement. Needless to say....I was a bit more senior than most.

What you fail to see is that we will have problems scheduling (and beating) enough "teams worth playing." I am thrilled with some of the teams we have scheduled... but it is a game or two each year.

C-USA membership would certainly increase the overall quality of our schedule, even if it means missing out on 1 or 2 big games a year. What really would matter is if we can continue to pull the ACC teams to play us as often while still being in the C-USA.

When you say it'll "increase the overall quality of our schedule" are you referring to SOS or are those opponents more appealing to you as a fan?

For me it's more appealing as a fan. I find playing/beating ODU, Marshall, Charlotte, WKU, FAU, FIU, etc more appealing than Buffalo, New Mexico State, and UConn.

I don’t see why LU couldn’t. In fact I think it would make it easier. Being in a Conference at this point gives LU legitimacy that it doesn’t have as an Independent.

I read this somewhere (it might have been on here) but it seems there's a divide between how independent is viewed.

For Liberty, BYU, and probably UConn, we view our independent status as strong, flexible, able to support ourselves, etc.

To the rest of the country, they view our independence as homeless, unappealing, and less than.

I broached the subject. Outside of ND, BYU and maybe ARMY Independent is seen as where the homeless vagrants of college football go. Look at the other Independents, no one is clamoring for them or they’ve been booted. LU even had to threaten a law suit just to gain FBS status. Being in a Conference would add instant credibility to LU’s program. However, at this point I’m certainly not an advocate to jump at the first Conference invite. But if C-USA calls LU should jump!

To be fair Notre Dame is also viewed that way. A lot of cfb fans hate independents because too much identity is wrapped up in conferences nowadays. Why does it matter what the rest of the country thinks? If we join c-usa, Sunbelt, or Mac we would still be looked down on either way for being in such a weak conference.

The best part of a possible CUSA invite would be the opprtunity to get out of the ASUN. Nothing hurts our credibility like being in the ASUN.

Credible to whom? All non Football sports have a path to NAtional Title. Realistically, are recruits in Hoops Baseball Softball focused more on the conference schedule at G5 level or the Program, coach and facilities? I highly doubt any of our non FB head coaches are thinking “ if only we were in Conference USA or Sunbelt I could recruit so much better.”

The issue of credibility was brought up in this discussion, and clearly I'm speaking of the athletic department as a whole. I'm not knocking the ASUN, they are who they are and I'm grateful that they took us in considering the fall out we had with the Big South. But we've obviously moved ahead of the ASUN and the Big South within the last 5-10 years, and it's time to move to a higher level of competition.

True, but if no other conference ever takes us in - we can be the Gonzaga of all those sports in theory and if we do it - then perception of our athletic is well - Gonzaga like - they don’t get much ridicule that I have seen. Yes they had to prove it a few years to get the seeding they deserved. The main factor is , does it effect the quality of recruits in these sports and i just don’t think it does. 85 % of revenue and perception is tied to Football regardless . Making conference decisions based on anything other than football at this level is fatalistic.
Are we back?

I thought it was done too
