You're Mr. Turner Gill for life aren't you?
Yeah. But I’m also a realist. And doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like to see a tweak here or there
Do you really think LU will make a head coaching change??? Seems very, very unlikely.
This year or next?

I would be fall out of my chair shocked if they make a change. Winning saturday and the extra week for nsu game took the percentage to me down to 1 percent or less.

Those of us who follow the program closeley know why it would make sense but i would say 60 percent of the fan base think hes doing a great job from what i read and see.

Also nationally we would get smashed for firing a 6 and 6 transitioning coach and then hiring freeze

Hes spoken way too confidentally publically and IM and JR have continuosly pumped the narrative of how far above expectations we were this year. I think once he was retained last year he was given 18 and 19 to see through the transition period.

I do think there is a chance for some movment at dc. How much it helps who knows but i would guess singletary to dc and wimbo demoted but stays on staff. I know they are co now but from everything ive always heard its wimbos D. Theres also a couple easy replacement candidates on d if we wanted to go that route but i doubt it.

Anybody!

But, Gill will stay.
I would like to see a few changes underneath him but I sure do not expect the gumption is there to do it.
Why will Gill stay?
I believe Gill has the support of his bosses.
6-6 despite massive shortcomings this year.
Side note: Can't wait to see how that stacks up against next years schedule.
If we are seeking a bigger name coach who will come in to lose pretty solid for two or three years?
The Gill dynasty continues!

I think that will be the real thing to watch this off season. Gill has historically been very loyal so it will be interesting to see if he makes the changes that need to be made. Especially on the defensive end but there is a lot that can be said about the lack of progression Buckshot has shown. I would like to see a QB coach to help Dailey because it doesn't appear he is really getting the job done and it may do him some good just focusing on the OC duties. Just a thought.

We should finish 6-6, but there will be people talking 20 years from now, about how we should have gone 8-4 or 9-3.

IF there is one person who we could potentially keep on the defensive coaching staff than Singletary would be it. But that is a BIG IF.

I think like many of you, DEFENSIVE STAFF CHANGES MUST BE MADE. Maybe we should start a new topic, aka Our Next Defensive Coordinator. ha.

Now that the year is over, (I am going to take for granted we beat NSU), lets look at the results. We had 4 wins this year against FBS schools and 2 wins against very, very weak FCS schools. The combined records of the 4 FBS schools we beat is 19-29 (Troy had 9 of those 19 wins).
Let's say that the administration doesn't fire Gill after this year. (If I were Gill, I would resign without an extension, going into the final year of my contract). Doubt he will do that, because I don't see anyone knocking down his door for another opportunity.
OK, we have one more year with Gill under contract. We are not going to get any better with the current coaching staff. I don't think anyone here really thinks TG is the guy to take us forward with our schedule in the next few years. You can't take 7 years of mediocrity and expect a sudden change. He is not going to all of a sudden get a charismatic or magnetic personality or stop making stupid calls, or losing to teams we should easily beat. To be fair, he has also won a couple of games, we should have lost as well.
All that being said, why waste another year with the status quo? Let's get a staff that can recruit the talent that we really need to compete at a respectable level of FBS football. I think the chances of making a change after this year are 50/50, maybe higher.
Hopefully the admin will make the correct decision and not throw away/waste the next few years. These early years are critical to our future FBS growth. Thoughts?

I don't necessarily disagree but I see the administration making a change this year as slim to none. What makes you think a head coaching change is greater than 50%?

I think the rescheduling of the NSU game for December 1 makes it next to impossible for us to make a change. If we truly used “good recruiting class” as a reason for keeping him last year then you can’t fire him 18 days before the signing period begins. As much as I disagree with it, we’ve got at least one more year of this circus.

So here is something I am interested in hearing yall's opinions on:

If the plan has been to move on from Gill after the 2019 season then does he recommend a significant change to the defensive staff or not?

What good does it do to make changes to a staff if your going to let them all go the following year?

By the way, I am not advocating one bit to keep the defensive staff if in fact Gill knows or it has been hinted that he won't be back after 2019.

The better question is who signs on for one year? If the defensive staff doesn't dramatically improve, they're all gone when a new coach comes in anyway.

Because Gill wants to stay here so he theoretically would want to do all I can to make that happen. Similar to how athletes tend to have their best years during their contract years.

But historically Gill has been very loyal so who knows what will happen.

The one problem with not extending Gill this year is a “lame duck” status. It will really have an effect on recruiting.
“Coach, I really like what you have to say and I would love for our son to play for you. What assurance do we have you will be there after next year?”
“Ummm”

That's what encourages me and terrifies me at the same time.

The good: I don't think we'd send him into a lame duck year, meaning this would the year to make a move.

The bad: I don't think we'd send him into a lame duck year, so we'll extend him this winter.

The early signing date was definitely a reason we kept him, not the only one however. The difference this year is a bit different IMHO. The admin didn't want to mess up the FIRST, FBS recruiting class, with a new coach coming in and having no time to meet with the recruits, prior to signing day. This year, those who have committed so far, don't really seem to be athletes that can't be replaced, before the Feb signing period, by a good coach. We still have more than our share of commits that have few if any FBS offers. There is nothing that says that we would lose all of the early recruits, because of a coaching change.
If I was a betting man, I don't see Ian making the decision to give TG an extension. If he doesn't get an extension, it will be worse on recruiting, than just letting him go. Not sure what the other part of the decision-making team will make. We all know Jr. isn't as sports savvy as IM and he likes TG, so it will be interesting.

It may actually promote more offers to commit with us who are still on the edge with committing to a school. As Flameshaw stated, if we receive a respectable coach with a more valuable resume, some athletes may wait until February if they are not planning to start school in the Spring. From what I've seen, a good amount of JUCO's and of course HS athletes that we've offered will start in the fall of 2019. Just a thought, I could be wrong on this matter.
