Kinda interesting that we are talking about playing P5 schools when we give up 600+ yards to a FCS school and barely win the game. Kool Aid and popcorn for all. 8) 8)

LIke it or not - this thread has nothing to do with this year. More like what is our goal - be considered a P5 leave team or a G5 level team 10 years from now and what is the scheduling philosophy. Playing 4 P5 teams like we are scheduling makes no sense for either scenario - either play 2 more or 2 less depending on what you want to be.

I’ve been a HUGE proponent of joining a conference ever since the trigger was pulled to go FBS. But as SLY alluded to at this point in time there is going to be a lot of upheaval in 3-5 years. So for now, LU can sustain being Independent in the short term but after this next shake up they need to land in a Conference of some type. (I think there will be a paradigm shift in P5/G5)
As for Appy they’ve played LU in several sports since their little decree.

Don’t worry. He will take every opportunity to bash the current staff. “The why is blue” “but it would be bluer if LU had a new coaching staff”. He’s a one trick pony

If we want to stay G5 level, then I agree. If we want to move to P5 invite the quickest - I think joining a G5 conference is a big mistake. Independent status lets us schedule 6-7 P5 and establish ourselves as a major player and brand name when it comes to future P5 Conference Invite and if the invite never comes, we can make Independent work like with that same formula - strong enough schedule that when/if we have a great year we are ahead of all the G5 schools for Playoff or Big Bowls.

IMO the whole paradigm of G5/P5 will be gone during the next big shake up. I think College Football and Conferences will look very different. I just don’t see being Independent as a long term viable option for LU. Even ND had to partially settle for a Conference schedule. BYU would love to be in a good Conference
In short, the landscape will change dramatically and LU will need to find a home.

What I fear is a subdivision break between P5 and G5. There are a lot of FBS programs that are bloat on their conferences and cannot compete financially with them. A P6 with the American poaching the top program from the other G5 conferences and leaving the remaking four to wither seems like the compromise the P5 could agree to.

If that break occurs, Liberty will have to fight again to be a top tier football program.

Almost all of the G5 teams don't have to budget to compete as is. Who are they going to poach? American would be a glorified G5 conference. Real movement will happen once players start getting compensated.

Good article on this.

Once players start getting paid, Liberty will be a player because they have an unlimited budget.

Players should NEVER start getting paid. If you pay football players, you will have to pay every college athlete in every sport. Some schools are barely getting by now.
I never liked this Power 5 stuff when it became reality. Every conference should be on level playing field. Weak leadership within NCAA brought on 99% of all problems in college athletics.

You think Alabama and Charleston Southern have the ability to be on the same level?

Truth be known, no one is on same level as Alabama, but other schools should not be "locked out". Play the game, if you win you win, if you lose you lose.
Putting ACC, SEC, Big 10, Big 12, PAC12 and Notre Dame separate from all others was a mistake in my opinion. Bottom line in all this, is the weak leadership within NCAA.

This smacks of socialism, Ballcoach. College athletics, including the NCAA, is competitive. And in competition, there are always winners and losers, have’s and have nots. What you’re suggesting is impossible even in the greatest of circumstances.

Are you an athletic socialist?

In another thread he revealed his Liberal Socialist roots. Ask Postie

Yeah, this shouldn't be a shock go people anymore. Ballcoach is a closet liberal. Apparently a liberal socialist. I wonder what his old Army buddies think about this.

Speaking of G5 - Buffalo 7-1 and having a great season , playing now on ESPN Tues Night National TV, stadium capacity 25k ( reduced from 29k last year ) doubt they have 10k in the seats. Sad. LU must get to P5 level ASAP at all costs. UMass probably wont pop 10k next week either.

Yea 10k would be generous, it seriously looked like maybe maybe 2,000.

Just to stir the pot. The UCF example.

CJ Sweat wrote:The truth is...ANY of the 1 loss teams, and several of the 2 loss teams would be undefeated with UCF’s schedule. If you want in with the big boy programs, schedule like a big boy program.

I hate that scheduling arguement. It takes 2 to tango and they do schedule P5s every year. Since most are scheduled 6 years in advance there is no way of knowing if those will end up bring strong.

I agree that UCF isnt a top 5 team but I really enjoy how angry people get about UCF fans pointing out how broken the system is. I especially enjoy how angry ESPN analysts get. You aren't suppose to feed the trolls but it seems ESPN just can't help themselves.

UCF is still the defending national champions ;)

I still think the best way is a 12 team playoff. All 10 conferences and two at large. Top 4 seeds get a bye. Exactly like the NFL. It would take a month to shake out, 5 weeks if you put an additional bye before the champ game like the NFL does.

Your conference champs always get the opportunity to upset a big dog. A conference runner up can still play their way to a natty.
