Do you mind sharing your idea on this matter? I always wanted to learn the limitations of scholarships between the sports teams of the division 1 level.

We have a redshirt JR this year who will certainly graduate. We also have a FR who was not expected to need a scholarship when he was recruited, but was given one for this year due to a "change in circumstances".

Barber was offered a scholarship prior to signing his LOI.

That's normally how it works

The timing was more than a bit strange in that Jay signed his NLI a week before his father's resignation was announced. I have a feeling the parties concerned knew what was coming. How else do you justify giving a scholarship to a player who did not need it because his tuition would have been paid as the child of an employee while another player who had a scholarship offer going back to the summer after his FR year of HS (Newton) was going to have to settle for a preferred walk on spot until another schollie opened up when Reid transferred.

Yeah I thought that if a player was on a team with any scholarship (even if a non-athletic scholarship) still counted toward the total. Am I wrong?

That is true for football due to the "Bear Bryant rule" It does not generally apply to other sports if the scholarship is available to all qualified students and has nothing to do with their athletic prowess. Dominique Jones and both of Layer's sons got free tuition as employee's children and did not count against our basketball scholarship limit. Jay would have been in the same catagory. Scotty James, who's mother is a professor at Liberty is still counting for us (Pending a proposed rule change) because he was a scholarship player at Bradley before transferring.

No correlation. The changes that were made were not known. It was a surprise.

If JB didn't know a change was coming, I would be totally surprised. I knew about it and knew who was going to replace him. before it was announced. (I didn't get my info from one source, it was putting some info together from several places and putting two and two together). LU was vetting McCaw for at least a year before the change was made. JB was working without a contract for some time before the change was made, I can't imagine him having a good feeling about the future.
As far as scholarships, unless something has changed recently, they are awarded for only a year at a time. Most all schools will honor them for 4 years. Some AD's insist that coaches cannot take a scholarship away once it is rewarded. I know that Winthrop had this rule several years ago. I suspect if one of these big name players become available, there will be a way made available for them to come aboard. We usually lose a couple of players every year anyway.

Interesting Rivals article on Kyler Edward's recruitment. The closest thing to a Liberty mention is his statement that he is "still open to everyone who is currently involved" in recruiting him. Looks like SMU and Houston have the edge right now. All the unofficial visits he did recently were done on a family vacation.

https://basketballrecruiting.rivals.com ... ith-visits

IMHO our hopes to sign Kyler depend entirely on whether we can get him on campus. I doubt his father would pressure him too much on the actual decision, but I can see where he might push hard for him to make an official visit before making his decision in early September.

Interesting map showing some of the places our coaches have been this month.

Dallas and Charlotte are no-brainers. The other locations may be AAU event sites. Lawrence and Orlando are "intriguing".

Interesting that someone mention the event occurring at Louisville this weekend. Too bad that none of our coaches will attend. The other places like Orlando and Lawrence are interesting. McKay and the gang are going all out on the recruiting field :D

It's not even a school, let alone a good one. It's a basketball factory financed by a Vegas auto dealer.

In reading my statement above, I want to elaborate a bit, because it sounds pretty harsh. I am FAR from the first person to refer to Findlay Prep by the term "basketball factory", and it is somewhat a matter of semantics, but it is not totally fair. The statement that Findlay Prep is not a school however, is 100% accurate. Nonetheless, by all reports, the players get good HS instruction, and they claim a 100% qualifying rate for their Seniors, which is certainly impressive.

The way they achieve this is pretty unusual. When Findlay Prep was started 13 or so years ago, the players attended classes at the nearby Henderson International School. A few years ago, the school had a financial crisis due to the depressed Vegas economy, and had to shut down their HS and focus on preschool-grade 8. An agreement was reached for Findlay Prep founder Cliff Findlay (an auto dealership mogul, former UNLV basketball player and current booster) to continue paying the $17,000 annual tuition for the players in return for the school providing instruction and ultimately diplomas for them. They are the only students there above the 8th grade. Findlay Prep also brings in specialists from Princeton Review to do SAT prep work with the players.

Cliff Findlay categorically denies the rampant speculation that he founded the Findlay Prep Pilots to be a feeder program for his beloved Runnin Rebels (he has a seat right next to the AD for every home game). He says he did it to honor his parents and provide young men with educational opportunities. Several Findlay Prep alumni have played for UNLV, but not so many that it could not be explained by geographic proximity. The NCAA is obviously watching carefully, and both the UNLV and Findley Prep coaches look to be doing their best to avoid impropriety.

He is a good player and in a way I don't blame McKay and the coaches for giving out this offer. In my opinion, I sort of seeing Kyler staying close to home. I know his dad is an alumni and all, but Kyler looks like a kid who would want to near to family and friends. In the end I hope Kyler makes the best decision and it would be nice to have either of these guys.

Bumping this thread for a couple of "housekeeping" items.

1) Trey Jemison. the 6'11" 4 star we offered early and then backed off of to go after Blake Preston, has committed to Clemson. For the record, that change was apparently motivated by the fact that Jemison made it pretty clear he wanted to play at the high major level. If the interest had been there on his part, he would have been a great fit at LU (as will Preston).

2) With the departure of Jay Barber, it appears we will now have a scholarship available for this class. It will be interesting to see what direction we go with that. No open offers right now.

Apparently Josh has had a growth spurt and is now 6'3" with long arms. His older brother Hudson, who is now playing for dad at UNCC grew several inches after his JR year of HS and is now 6'7".
