I live 45 mins from Rutgers stadium and 2 1/2 hours from Penn State. I don't ever go to any of their games because every chance I can I drive 7 hours to LU to watch the Flames. The reason is very simple-I SUPPORT THE MESSAGE AND MISSION OF LU. Like it or not, football is the venue with the highest visibility. It provides an excellent opportunity for the rest of the country to pay attention (maybe for the first time) to Liberty University and what it's all about. Success on the athletic field or other campus activities should always point people to Christ. When viewers tune in to ESPN3 and see the student section not filled and embarrassingly empty by the end of the game it doesn't give the impression that we all would like. We want people to be curious about LU and give them a reason to look deeper into the mission of the university. This is a call to everyone who can to support all the activities of LU. Let's fill both sides of the stands for next week's game. Drop by my tailgate (field across from hockey rink-NJ plates). I'd love to meet some of you.

Excellent post Dalegarz1.

Many fans are too lazy to come to games. I think TV hurts attendance somewhat, in that games are televised. TV is for those unable to make it to Williams Stadium. As for students, there is no excuse for them not to be there. I believe we have 15,000 on campus. 14,999 of them should be at games. Only exception are those who work on saturdays.
Attendance at Monmouth game was pitiful. Being Homecoming, makes it more pitiful.

There are multiple factors going into why attendance is down. I'd rank the biggest reasons:

1) We aren't very good.
2) Most teams we play are even worse.
3) TV makes is super convenient to stay home and watch from the couch if the weather isn't 100% perfect.
4) Jerry has alienated a lot of alumni who now don't want to invest the time/money to come back.

Jerry isn't as popular with the students as he once was. That's my observation from my few hours on campus. Also the band doesn't take the whole 3rd quarter off!

I'm with you! Haven't miss a home in 8 years. I drive up from NC and usually bring 7 people with me. LU's just getting started.

Here's another thing we have to take into account:

Enrollment exploded somewhere around 02-04. If I'm not mistaken, the 04 freshman class was as big as the rest of the school combined. With that being the case, it means the largest group of alumni we have are under the age of 34ish. That means our largest group of alumni are currently in the grips of young kids. For most, it's not worth it to go to a game with kids under 5-6 years old. Add that to home games being televised and the incentive to drive multiple hours with young kids is much less than having the game on tv in your own house.

I had a 10 year stretch where I didn't miss a home game (until I think the Presbyterian game in 2013). If I make it back to Lynchburg I plan to be at every home game and hopefully have a chance to go to a road game or two as well.

Exactly. If my kids were older I'd make the trip more often. The only reason I went this week was because this is my last year in DC and I had to do the trip solo.

I partially agree with the first 3 points. Regarding point 4, actually there was a record number of alumni (8000) at the game per LU Alumni website .

I like this. The students need to read this and the team, good or bad, deserves our support and the support of the student body. These are still young men who also need to see that message materialize in the support. What must our athletes fell when they see the student body abandoning them in droves to the point there are 150 left on the student side with 10 minutes left in the game? I know what I would be feeling.

If we had 8000 alumni at the game this weekend then we are screwed moving forward with attendance. There's no way that number is accurate. That would mean there was only 1000-1500 non-alum or students at the game.

As for the students - you guys know my background. I was front row on the 50 leading the student section for four years. I did everything I could to get more students to games and get more people to care. I'm a gigantic advocate of students getting involved in athletics.

With that said, you have to look at the current climate both on campus and in general.

There are a few things we'll always fight against in terms of student engagement. The fact that we televise games makes it easier to hang out in the dorm and catch the game while also watching their favorite childhood team.

Our students also aren't fans of the teams. They're college kids in a small college town looking for something to do. Tailgating with friends is fun. Getting on the video board is fun. Watching a game is fun for a while. But the second the game gets boring, they go looking for the next fun thing to do.

Because our student section is 100% general admission, students have to get into the stadium 60-90 minutes before the game to get decent seats. That means to tailgate, get a good seat, and watch the entire game, you're investing 6-7 hours of your Saturday. Most students at any school aren't going to do that.

Now, turning to the current climate on campus:

When I was in school, we were chanting Jerry's name, being invited to his box, and he was a gigantic celebrity. Over the past year, we've heard reports of Jerry being booed at a football game and at graduation. On top of that, Nasser isn't highly thought of. While not everyone loved Johnny Moore, he wasn't outright disliked by a large group of students. When the students don't support or trust the leaders they see most often, they're less likely to support the athletic department or coaches when they come in and push students to come to a game.

On top of that, there are more ways than ever for students to vet the messages they're getting. It's easier for them to find out how good we actually are vs what the hype is telling them. If this generation smells BS, they turn on you.

Turning to the current climate of college students:

More students are having to work through school just to get by. The biggest day to work is Saturday.

The attention span of students is shorter than ever. Like I mentioned above, most 18-22 year olds aren't going to commit and entire day to something, especially if there's something else (hockey games, Scaremare, movies, other football games on tv, etc) competing for it.

Schools across the country have students leaving early. When Saban is pleading for students to stay, you know it's a national issue.

That would mean 100% of the Baptist side was alumni and their family. With our attendance yesterday, if we had 8000 alumni (and their family), that means we didn't have any visiting fans, unaffiliated city residents, or family and friends of players. I just don't buy that.

And on top of all that liberty has created so much for their students to do which is awesome but doesn't help football at all.

I was just blown away this weekend with how much more there is to do just on campus now.

I'm not sure how they count attendance but the gate I went through were having issues with their ticket scanners as well.

I also don't think all the alumni who were on campus were at the game.

I could totally buy that there were 8000 people signed up the LU Alumni for homecoming weekend. With no cost for registering for Homecoming weekend, there's no penalty if someone signs up and doesn't actually come. For example, I literally just signed up for Homecoming before I typed this post. They can now add four people to their Homecoming numbers even though I signed up from Tennessee at 5PM on Sunday of Homecoming weekend.

Trying to picture Jonathan as an undergrad in 2016 with his shirt off and painted up in white like a "Jerry's Joker." No, I'm just not seeing it. :nonono
