I believe we start off 1-3 and end up 6-5 or 7-4. As long as we make the playoffs, it will be a successful season in my opinion.

Agree, hopefully we will use more zone reads to take advantage of his speed.

If he didn't you know his son did.

Really happy to hear that about Buckshot forbidden, and not surprised I am hoping that even if Calvert is good enough to win the starting job, HCTG will utilized Masha a lot more than he did last year With Woodrum slowed by all the extra weight he put on, we really limited our offense by going with him exclusively When they did put Masha in for the occasional play, everyone in the stadium knew he was going to run and he still averaged 8 ypc Whether as a starter oroff the bench, he needs the opportunity to run the offense for entire series so he can present the threat of both running and passing

Soon as he signed, I said he'd have to absolutely blow the coaches away for it not to be Masha leading the offense in Blacksburg. Sounds like it's going to be a very interesting training camp

H_O, my guess is he is he is throwing on the side with the receivers and they are meshing quickly since there can't be official practices for another few weeks. That kind of a relationship will be a key factor heading into the start of camp.

No "on the side" about it, they would be out there on the field, doing a lot of the same drills they will do when practice starts, just without the coaches A knowlegable person who observed (let's say some guy named Wesley) would see plenty to evaluate his arm talent and demeanor

I don't know you guys as well as you know each other, so I wasn't aware that forbidden had a son on the team. Either way, great news to hear.

I guess my definition of "on the side" in this case would be different from how most would classify that olldflame...anyway if he is connecting on this level before official practice even kicks off (Check in is I believe in 3 weeks...WHAT???), that is going to make for a VERY intriguing battle between him and Masha...

Im projecting a bit by asking this, but can someone find out when was the last time we had a true freshman start the season opener for us?

Our conference schedule is pretty favorable for us. We have a bye week before Kennesaw St., which will give us time to prepare for their offense. We have GW, Monmouth, and Charleston Southern at home. At Presbyterian in our annual WTF game. I like our chances of winning the conference. Hopefully we will have a great crowd for Chuck South.

We probably have to go back even before Manson or postie or myself was on the mountain...I know Josh started in 2013, 2014 and 2015, I believe Bryan Hudson started in 2012 (although Woodrum became the starter after the Montana game)m Mike Brown was 2010 and 2011, Tommy Beecher was the starter in 2009, Brock Smith was the starter in 2006, 2007 and 2008, I believe Brock Farrel was the starter in 2005...and that's as far back as I can find stats

Brock Smith and Robbie Justino started games as true Freshmen, but not the opener Woodrum was redshirted his first year I think Flameshaw's answer is correct, but that 73 team did not play a college varsity schedule, and none of their stats appear in our record book, so as far as that is concerned if Calvert were to start against the Hokies it would be a first

Im not saying nothing more than when most kids come out of HS they CAN'T make all the throws, this kid can make them and with some mustard to boot. I have NO idea what the coaches plans are, and my kid WON'T tell me much (not like he really does). He told me I may be a mole. Its very rare for this to happen so, I still believe that Masha will win the job but IMO I think it would be hard to keep him (Calvert) off the field.

I was at first game Liberty played. All I remember about it was Dr. Falwell was on sidelines.

This post sounds a lot like when Mike Brown got here. The kid was so dang talented and could run away from the first team defense that we all couldn't believe Rocco wouldn't put him in, especially when Brock struggled. In the end it was better to redshirt him because 23 year old Mike was better than 18 year old Mike.

I doubt it happens, but I hope Masha is good enough and Calvert is good enough that we can at least attempt to hold him (Calvert) out until it's absolutely needed. There's no use throwing him out there in mop up duty against Tech.

If Calvert is clearly one of our 2 best QBs, the decision becomes do we try to save a year of eligibility for him down the road or get him as ready as possible to take the reins of the team if Masha gets hurt I know Stephen looks like he is chiseled out of steel these days, but it's actually flesh and bone, and especially with him no doubt running quite a bit, injuries can happen

That has been my feeling from the day he signed (I think even back to when he vc'd to us as well Jon...the only way he ends up starting for us year 1 (if not day 1) is if he is so unbelievably good that we can't keep him off the field.

Ill say this, if everyone is so concerned about HCTG having a decent record, then I can just about guarantee that he will be dressed, and available. His RS has him him for four more years, is there ANY guarantee that HCTG will be here. If this kid is good enough then like i said awhile back, Masha can't afford to get hurt, PERIOD. You could have a Drew Bledsoe/Tom Brady situation, and Masha gets moved to another position. Wins = job security, not saving for the future.
