Ok, the last few game threads have turned into debates more or less about our Lady Flames, so I figured I'd just start one where we can all voice our opinions about the state of this program (but no personal attacks).
Ok, so we started the season off strong...we beat 5 teams (though GMU was quite the scare) including UVA on the road. Then we play JMU. JMU is quite a step up from a lot of the competition we saw last year OOC. They are a contender to win a very strong CAA this year. They are not exactly Loyola-MD. We lose, which I didn't pick us to lose this game, but whatever. Then we return home to face VT. I think we all picked this game to be a W by the time game time rolled around, seeing as how VT lost at home to both Radford and W&M (W&M incidently has also lost on the road to High Point). We get a double-digit lead right before the half, but in the waning seconds of the first half VT gets on a run to gain some momentum. We end up losing 55-52. A disappointment, but remember VT is in the extremely powerful ACC. Then up to GW...we have a solid lead at halftime but lose a close one. GW is ranked in the top 20...Feenstra and Co. didn't knock off a top 20 team until upsetting No. 17 Kansas State their senior year (and still lost at home to VT that year) and K-State was without their star player. Up there, we were without KP. We beat Va. Union, and then its off to Cancun where we lose two to UT-Arlington and Pitt. UTA is, again, above the level of our normal OOC competition. Last year, we had the likes of William & Mary (though they are better this year it seems), Loyola MD., and other middle-of-the-pack-in-one-bid-conference teams. UTA, JMU are contenders for the Southland and CAA, respectively, and Marist is definitely a contender for the MAAC when we face them. Pitt is from the Big East, and while we did have a lead at halftime and for most of the second half, there is a reason why they are ranked and they proved it against us.
So, final analysis. Are we a good team? Yes. Do we have issues? Yes-like turnovers and closing games out. Do we have issues beyond our control? Yes-KP's injury. What will it take to fix these issues? Better play from our guards-we know Faschnact and Watkins are both capable of scoring in double digits, better ball handling. Do we have the talent to fix these issues? Yes. The coaching staff? Yes. Is it going to take time? Yes it will. This is a good team, facing some better teams than what we had last year. Bottom line...good team, a couple more losses due to better competition, still gonna dominate the Big South and earn 11th straight bid to NCAA tourney.
