I'm not saying the guy won't be a great QB here or I really care what he wore to prom. I have bad pictures too, but I do look at who people associate themselves with. Call me old school, but if I saw some of his tweets and pictures on one of my sons twitter feeds - they wouldn't have access to it anymore. LU is a different environment and the best QB's in our history handled themselves with a LOT of class and were above reproach. He’s very small and most elite QB’s come to college ready, knowing that the game is bigger – I just thought this guy was polished enough to start from day one and I don’t see his frame handling a pounding 12 times in his first year.

My opinion. We are still allowed to have those, right? I hope he proves me wrong…

Opinions are like a******s, everybody has one Proto...just be glad you're in a country where you can exercise it on a message board and not somehow disappear without a trace soon thereafter.

Personally Id probably have a chat with the kid about it and to be careful who he hangs out with once he gets to campus that's pretty much it.

To respond to what someone said earlier, I don't want him to put on a ton this quickly but you have to believe he will look different after working out this summer with Gillespie. How different is something Im sure he will talk to him about if he hasn't already since signing day

Did I reference those? Would Dres Breeze work better for you?
Lots of lanky QB's work out.
Heck, I love the 70's retro look thing he had going on. I wonder if it was the Prom theme. I have no issues with what's on his Twitter. If you posted some of the things my friends said back in the day.....
I guess I'm not as prudish as some folks

That is a name that came to mind for me too, but there are certainly others. Give me a choice between a wirey QB with plus arm talent and mobility and another with a big strong prototypical NFL body who is average at both and I'll take the little guy who can sling it every time. For the record, Calvert does appear to be a legit 6'3", which is a good thing as well, and more than you can say for Manziel.

Manziel? That's funny. He had an absolutely incredible offensive line, Mike Evans, Ryan Swope and a really good coach. On top of that, Kevin Sumlin didn't want to start him. He's possibly the most overrated player in college football history and every NFL team, besides the most dysfunctional Cleveland Browns, passed on draft day.

The comparison was to physical build. Not offensive linemen

Manziel was pretty freaking good in college. I don't think his game was overrated in college, he made some pretty amazing plays on a regular basis in college. The reason most teams passed on him was because his game/play style wasn't going to translate to the pro's whom were bigger, faster and more disciplined. On top of that, his character issues pointed to a likely self-destruction. A college team that pays maybe $24k/yr on scholarships has no problem taking that risk. A pro team that spends a draft pick, plus millions on a player is more than likely not going to take that risk. Of course there are the usual suspects that are willing to take those risks because they ache for playmakers/game changers that could alter the course of their franchise (Browns, Cowboys, etc.).

If we're honest, most of us are probably envious of Buck, because we weren't the starting quarterback for our high school team and didn't get to drive a Corvette to our high school prom (esp. the second part).

SOME, of yalls posts are flat out RIDICULOUS. This KID is still a KID, and I can just about bet a dollar to a donut that RIGHT NOW TODAY he can sling the ball better than Masha, and by no means am I saying he is better or should be the starter but as a pure QB throwing, I don't think its close. Other attributes and most likely being in the system 3 years is what will be the deciding factor, there and if you want to really be honest Swanson should be the #2.

This kid will be under center this year, either by injury or getting some clean up preparations for just in case Masha gets hurt at some point this year. The media will love his accent, he will come off like Colin Kaepernik(ish) IMO with his playing style. He will win the fans over with his style of play, the media will like him and he will do fine in this system. Bashing him because of how he "retweets" what someone else says but how he may be feeling is STUPID and just as CHILDISH as saying, I wouldn't let my kid follow him on twitter because of it. People need to GROW up and LOOSEN up their pants and breath a little stop being so uptight about every blinking thing in this world.

This is a message board and this is what we do. We debate things. We have differences of opinions. Call me a bad dad, but my children would not be following him on Twitter - period (If they were even on it). But they could have followed the past 10 or so QB's for us. I'm not trying to beat on the kids talent - he looks like a real get when you watch him play, his level of competition, etc..., but that's not my concern. My concern was - he doesn't look the part to me right now and I thought he would come in ready... Don't give me the Manziel comparisons. He's not that good, nor will he have the offensive weapons Manziel had. I just have seen to many hyped players come to Liberty in multiple sports that we all thought were going to be the next great thing and they sizzled out quickly, not because lack of talent, but for reason's off the field/court or because the atmosphere was such a shock to them.

Do I hope he becomes the greatest QB in our history - oh yeah - I will be the loudest one at the game chanting "BUCK-SHOT, BUCK-SHOT". Just not that naive to see his twitter account and be celebrating it... It threw some yellow flags up for me...

I thought you were banging on him because not all his friends were clean wholesome Old Time Gospel hour types and he went 70's chic to his prom
Which is it? No one says he is Johnny Football. But you brought up his stature so it was countered with the most obvious example, and a couple others, of QBs with sligh builds who were successful Johnny Football being the most obvious. RG3 wasn't exactly stout either. You can make the kid strong. You can make him tall. I believe he's 6'3". That's pretty average.
Or is it the group of kids on his Twitter feed? I'm sure his team has a rather diverse group of people like any team. To judge a kid based on that is flat out dumb.

And, let me PROMISE you this much, if you THINK you are going to be able to stop your kids from following a certain type on twitter, snap, IG or whatever then YOU are not only FOOLING yourself your making your kids do it anyways. I have two of the best kids in the world, IMO one that coincidentally goes to LU and did I stop him from following things just because I didn't like it, no and I knew I couldn't or it wouldn't be in best interest long term, did I MONITOR, yes, and he has come out pretty dang good, for my lil princess who is not 15, only thing I can tell you is good luck, and unless your gonna put a burka on her and shield her from the entire world it wont do you any good. Monitor yes, ban nah cuz it aint gonna work, unless you wont allow them to have phones, cpu's tablets or the like, lol

Both. But I am mainly questioning his maturity. He's isn't a kid anymore - he's 17 years old. People are going to dig into social sites now that he will be in the public eye. I have always advised anyone that is not making money off of social, but has a chance to lose something, get off. You would be amazed on how much social sites mean in the hiring practice in this day and age - I'm sure many of you that own companies on this board already know this.

With what happened at Baylor its more evident that its the University's responsibility to make sure the kids they are giving scholarships to, and who represent them on such a major stage, are living right.

BTW, none of my concerns are character issues. Because he is still a kid, I will give him the benefit of the doubt and see how he handles the college experience.
#510238
17 is still a kid. Unless we are back in the Pioneer days. He still lives at home etc.
you are spot on about social media. I've had companies check mine. I don't see anything in his that make me gasp. But again I'm not as prudish as some

I understand that. I'm really not that much of a prude. My kids, I have 4 by the way, 14 to 4, aren't locked in a room. I'm not one of those parents that won't let their kids go to movies above a G Rating. My kids have iPads and iphones (no service until they get a job that pays for it) and I have even brought them to MMA events (Stupid example, but just trying to say - I'm not some over protective father that shelters his kids). BUT - I do also monitor my kids activity online - I get every text, every email, notified when they download every app. And if one person on their text thread curses or puts up an inappropriate comment/picture - you know what happens? - my kids will tell me and block them themselves. Why? because they fortunately don't like it, and they know that if I find out - they will lose it for a really long time. Then hopefully, when they move out at 17-18, they will know more, and realize that who they hang around matters. Then all I can do is pray for them. But I have a pretty good feeling, like yours, my oldest boys will be just fine - they already seem to be driven to be successful in life and know what the consequences of bad decisions can lead to.

My 13 year old is driven wants to play college lacrosse, and you better believe as his father(agent) I will do my best to keep his online profile as clean as possible.

I really hope Stephen and the whole Calvert family do not see this thread/board. This is an embarrassment. Beej, you should really be ashamed of posts like "Opinions are like a******s, everybody has one Proto..."
Not only is it way out of line, but you completely butchered the saying.

Anyway, we are all fans on this thing, so let's act like it and not say/do anything that would embarrass ourselves or our school.

As it pertains to Buckshot - He is 17/18 years old. He is going to be a freshman - as in he isn't yet. He has plenty of time to put on weight if he needs to, but I do not see that being a problem or concern for any of our freshman. Everyone who comes in puts on muscle/weight. Example: Brandon Apon graduated HS at 6'4" 195. Start of his R-Fr year he was 6'4" 255. Buckshot will be just fine. So will Rud. I am more intrigued by the competition that will play out between these two over the next 2 years than if they can put on weight. And I am certainly not going to be comparing them to 30 yr old grown men as Postie pointed out.
