Brandon said the visit went well and he enjoyed spending time with Coach Wimberly on Thursday. Spent the day with Coach Wimberly at school and lunch and he stayed and watched his basketball practice and talked with his dad. They were going to have an in home visit but his mother could not get out of a meeting at work. Coach Wimberly and Coach Bookbinder will be back on Tuesday to watch his basketball game and they plan to spend time with his parents and family on Tuesday as well. Go Flames!

Coach Wimberly and Coach Bookbinder visited Brandon yesterday to watch his basketball game and to spend time with his family. The visit went great and Brandon said he enjoyed spending time with the coaches and was glad they came. They are great coaches that care about their players and their families and they care about me and my family and that is why he can't wait to be a Flame and get started with my future at Liberty. It meant a lot to him for them to visit him twice in the last two weeks and to watch his basketball game. He said he will take his Official visit to Liberty January 22-24. Sounds like a done deal to me!

Looks like this one is as rock solid a hard commit as Ive seen in the last 5 recruiting classes. Has anyone else been sniffing around Dirty 30?

BJ,

South Carolina was recruiting him but never offered but new staff sent him a message about evaluating him since he was on the list of 2016 recruits and they will be in touch. Clemson still keeps in contact and told him to be patient and Georgia Tech and Georgia Southern have been in contact every week and told him the same thing. The reason why I didn't mention any of this before is because none of those schools mention will allow him to play baseball and Liberty is so that is one negative for the other schools. I ask him if one of the Power 5 schools offered would he consider, he said if he cannot play baseball then he will not consider the school. If anything changes in the next few days or next week, I will send it out ASAP.

The Shrine Bowl was a good one. NC beat SC 54 to 39. Brandon had two tackles. He did not play any offense. They played him at OLB/Spur in the game. He said he had a great time and made a lot of friends that he will stay in touch with for a long time. He is excited about moving to the next stage of his life with college football at Liberty and looking forward to signing day in February!

Another Accolade for Brandon Tillmon

http://www.hssr.com/NewsArticle.aspx?id=1360

In basketball action last night, his basketball team beat the #6 team in the state 61-49 and Brandon had 25 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assist, 3 steals and was 6 for 8 from behind the 3-pt line. Averaging 17.4 pts a game. He could play basketball in college but he is already committed to play Football and Baseball.

Back in my day, all the top HS jocks played 3 sports, and usually the same few were the stars in all 3. Starting about 20 years ago or so, there was a push for kids to focus on the sport they were best at year round (especially basketball) to maximize the chance to earn a scholarship. Looks like Brandon is old school. 8)

Actually in many places emphasizing specialization more than hoops. That's why it is rare to have somebody strong in both sports unless they are a pitcher. In that case, playing another sport actually protects their arm from overuse.

Baseball coaches are no doubt trying hard to hold on to what they have, but the reality is they have for the most part been the odd man out when it comes to the elite HS athletes in the era of specialization. Most of them are choosing football and/or basketball or football/track for the speed burners or big guys. Then a lot of them drop all but one their Senior year.

My favorite multisport athlete was Dick Groat. He eventually settled for basketball and baseball at Duke. He was the national player of the year in baseball and the national player of the year in basketball as well in the same year  . Never done before or since. Played both sports professionally before settling for baseball (Pirates).

Spoken like a true Pittsburgher. Groat is now 85 and still doing color for Pitt basketball. (FYI, I lived in suburban Pittsburgh for 4 years and graduated from North Hills HS).

Very cool. Went to Munhall HS which hasn't existed for some time now. Munhall merged with Homestead HS and became Steel Valley (Steelers) HS a number of years ago.
