It will be interesting to watch, no doubt. Obviously Masha is the favorite to be the starter, but both Calvert and Yearick will push him. If you haven't listened to our podcast from a week ago, listen to it. Rud Yearick was the first person we talked to, and he is very mature for a rising senior in high school. Both Duke and myself were very impressed by the way he handled himself.

I think the only scenario where we don´t have a pretty much open competition for the QB position in 2016 is one that involves something bad(Woodrum getting hurt and missing significant time) and something good (Masha stepping in, doing a great job and showing he could handle running the entire offense.) If that were to happen I think we could say the job would be his to lose. Otherwise, all bets are off.

Oh yeah, there is one more........................ FBS transfer, but I think even there you would need to at least make it look like there was competition.

I'll have an update as usual in Friday's news & notes post on all of our commits, but Calvert injured his shoulder. He missed last week's game and will miss tonight's game. The only timetable I've seen is that he will be out "2 weeks." So, it doesn't like its anything serious.

For those who have already written Calvert´s name in the lineup at starting QB next year, you may want to slow down a bit. Check his twitter account:

Unlike a lot of our committs in various sports, it almost seems he is going out of his way NOT to talk about his having committed to Liberty. He tweets a nice pic with Daly and Wimbo on a home visit but doesn´t even mention they are from LU or that he has verballed to play here. Multiple retweets about a recent offer he received from Bethune Cookman of all places, and in an earlier interview he gave the opportunity to play immediatly as his primary reason for committing. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the school or the program if you ask me. Glad to see our staff is following up, because right now I see this as a pretty soft verbal. Hope I´m wrong because he has outstanding arm talent and good mobility, and comes across as tough and confident as well.

sheesh, talk about over analyzing something. Is he supposed to bend over now because he has an offer from LU, come on now you know better than that. LIke he also sub tweeted about wanting an offer from UF. All the kid did along with most others is "lock" himself into something and waits to see if bigger comes along. I can promise you that him as well as almost any other kid that commits to an FCS receives a P5 offer will really think long and hard one way or the other. Remember going to a P5 doesn't guarantee you anything either as you can see some come right on back when things haven't worked out the way they want or thought. This kid has a real chance to come in and play here, true he will have to compete but has a good shot.

In a perfect world either Calvert or Yearick comes in and commands enough of the offense that we can take Masha and make him our version of Braxton Miller in becoming a WR and we go from there, unless the offense is really going to become a QB mobile friendly offense, something that can give teams fits as it gave us, at times through out the year.

I hear what you are saying forbidden, but it is a fact that a lot of the kids who commit here have the Liberty logo and pictures of the Bill or the Vines all over their twitter and the words ¨Liberty Commit¨right under their name on the account. The reasons they give for coming are things like the mission of the school, academics, facilities and coaches. Those are what I would call hard commits, You obviously need to follow up strong with them as well, but it just seems to me that for a place he has supposedly decided he wants to spend the next 4 years, Buckshot comes across as somewhat indifferent about LU. Maybe that´s just his style.

Yearick is graduating early and will be enrolled in January and participate in Spring drills, Sure, he could still change his mind, but I get a whole different vibe there.

I can´t see us moving Masha full time to WR. Even if we sign both of the Freshmen, that would only give us 3 scholarship QBs, which normally is bare minimum.

I could see us treating him similar to how we managed Zach Terrell's career back in the day. He's too good of an athlete to have on the sideline. Whether it is at QB or RB or WR, we need to get him the ball more frequently.

Buck's indifference on Twitter is less of a concern to me than the fact that he has tremendous buzz in Sunshine State recruiting circles. The fact that the U does not have a coach right now helps us. But if their new staff decides he is a priority or if the Gators add a late offer then we would have ample reason for concern.

Yea, good friend of the Terrell's and all that moving and versatility can be more of a detriment to the player in the long run than settling at one spot and getting your full potential.

Actually 2 things working in our favor where the Canes are concerned. They don´t have a coach and they DO have a very good Sophomore QB in Brad Kaaya, who will likely be under center for them for 2 more years or until he goes to the NFL. If Buckshot wants to play as a Freshman, that´s probably not the place. Gainesville could be another matter, although being a Miami fan he might not want to go there.

As I said in another thread, I doubt Miami makes a play for him. They have the aforementioned Kaaya who is a sophomore, as well as one Vincent Testaverde (U fans know the name), as well as two freshman QBs who will be sophomores in 2016 in Evan Shirreffs and Malik Rosier. Even if Calvert did go there, he would have to be absolutely the second coming of...I don't know...LU parent Jim Kelly...to pass all those guys play right away, much less his second year.
#501579
I'm sure. Bucs fans know it as well...I'm basing that on the fact that the first group who would recognize testaverdre would be fans of "the U" he had a very serviceable NFL career for a mediocre team down in Tampa
#501612
No doubt sly. My point is unless he is the second coming of Jim Kelly or Bernie Kosar or the aforementioned VT, He probably won't pass the established starter and three other QBs down there
