Short of having a mole inside the locker room giving you stuff, there's not a whole lot you can do. Even then, how can you believe what you're hearing is true if you're only hearing it from one or two voices? What if those people have an agenda and aren't telling the truth? Gill has put huge walls up around that program. It was incredibly frustrating to get anything of substance out of there.
Sometimes it's wise to close practices.

Jackson State's Statement Concerning Recent Clarion Ledger Article

"The Jackson State University Division of Athletics appreciates the coverage that it receives from the Clarion Ledger. Jackson State has allowed more than adequate access to the Clarion Ledger over the years and we look forward to a continuation of this productive relationship as we move forward through the years.

Previous football coaches have had open and closed practices at various times throughout the seasons. In addition, each of the last two prior coaches decided if and when they wanted assistant coaches and/or players to be accessible to the media during the week of practice. The decision to have open or closed practice, as determined by the head coach, is not limited to the football program. All JSU head coaches have the right to make that decision and have traditionally made those calls.

The decision to close football practice and to not make assistant coaches and players available to the media throughout the week was not undertaken lightly and is done in respect to the JSU football program, the coaches, players and to local and regional media outlets.

JSU football practice has been closed since the first week of this season. We decided to not make assistant coaches and players available to the media for the last two weeks so that the team can adjust to and work with the new coach on putting a quality product on the field - without too many outside influences.

During recent interviews coach McCall has not avoided answering any questions about the football team and been very open and honest about the state of the team. Following his first game as interim head coach, McCall and the players that were requested by the beat writer in attendance, were made available after a 10 minute cooling off period. While serving as head coach, McCall will be the main voice of the Tigers football program.

Coach McCall will continue to make himself available to talk to media members. Thank you for your interest and support of JSU athletics."

I think these coaches are wildly overstating the influence that a quick player interview with the local media will have on the state of their program. It's paranoia. These players are adults. They should be able to handle talking to the press.

On top of that, Gill is paranoid from his time at Kansas and has closed off almost all access from the media.
This x's 1,000! I even had someone ask me this week why I was bashing Gill on FlameFans! Me. Bashing Gill. On this board. I asked if they'd read it and they said 'No, but we heard he was getting bashed. And since you e been critical in the past I just thought you were ripping Gill'
LPS (Liberty Paranoia Syndrome) If you're not down 100% with everything than you must be 'the enemy'

As for Gill keeping practices closed, I'm fine with that. Especially considering what happened at Kansas. But I'm not a reporter so I can see how that would be frustrating!

Bottom Line,,,,Why do players leave? Whay are they not motivated. Don't necessarily believe all you read, problems are deep within this team. Local Press should dig in, but they tend to accept what they are told. Might be sheep in wolves clothes running the program there. It starts at the top...Time to rebuild! If I were a incoming recruit I would start to think twice about who will be here,m and how straight the coaching staff had been to me.
well not hard to see why you are a former, lol

There are plenty of resources out there. Former players (plenty of these folks) former coaches and of course current players. Agreed you don't need to just take the word on one player or one coach but digging in you will begin to hear the same things. Too many promises made and commitments only to be waffled on by this staff.

We made the playoffs less than 365 days ago with Stamn as coordinator.

Yeah. The Great may want to get a new moniker. Because, not so much.....

Can you give us an example? If you are throwing around the accusations having proof helps. Not saying you are right or wrong. Just wanting specifics

I think coach Stamn stole the great's girlfriend and ran over his dog while driving off in his car strangling his pet gerbil or something...

Getting people to talk is one thing. Getting people to go on the record is another, and at least at my former paper, we don't run with anonymous sources.

You can hear all you want, but when everyone says, "but you didn't hear that from me ...", it's fairly useless.

Hate to tell you HCTG has had more kids WANT to come here than he has had want to leave. So to make those accusations is really mind blowing to me.

The number of folks exiting the program the past few years has actually been less than just about any time in my memory. That seems like a strange angle to take in regard to the staff. The team is not performing well right now so there likely are issues to be addressed behind closed doors.

As for media access, I agree that closing things down completely can be counter-productive. I understand the intent, but the execution of the plan often leads to negative results.

One of the things that led to excitement under Rocco were that practices were open. You'd have students and locals sitting in the stands watching practice occasionally just because they had the time and were allowed to.

Also the appearance of accessibility gives off a friendlier/more likable impression than closed off exclusiveness.

I was more commenting on The Great's unusual fixation with Coach Stamn and desire to basically see him canned so he must have done something to him to warrant said fixation.

Since I'm not actually the final authority on what is funny and what isn't (although apparently some want to make fun of me in saying that I am), I won't answer flamehunter's request for a "ruling"

The appellate court of message board approval, heard by your honorable judge Purple Haize has ruled, JOKE NOT FUNNY. BJ is hereby sentenced to trying his best to stay on topic and buying everyone on message board a drink at first round playoff site.

LOL, I make myself laugh

I don't know stamn I have follow gill in his head coaching career starting a buffalo I have seen stamn work and it sucks and I put to and to together. If they want to win fire stamn if they want to make the playoffs with a bid fire stamn if they want to lose every other game keep stamn if they do not want to make the playoffs keep stamn if gill wants to lose his job keep stamn I rest my case

Anyway...

Someone else may have touched on this, but we are talking about the same OC who directs an offense that scored less than 20 points 11 times in the 42 games he has been OC (with 2 lf those instances against FBS opponents) AND is coaching a young man who despite his issues (as documented on here), is about to break a career record that has stood for over 30 years barring injury.

Well, apparently you haven't followed it as much as you say you have, because you say you don't know stamn but you know HCTG, then you would know they both worked together at several places. Stamn was an OL, TE and ST coach before becoming OC here. So how can you even start to blame Stamn for what happened before he was an OC here, fulltime. Your "case" has many holes in it and if you want to even begin to bring your case to the forefront it should hopefully be better than what you have done so far. CASE DISMISSED
