Growing up in Northern California I knew a lot of folks that attended and graduated from Stanford. While they weren't dullards, they were never even close to the smartest people I've known.

I don´t doubt you for a second, but while your experience is first hand, it is also highly anecdotal. Stanford and Princeton are generally considered to be the 2 top academic institutions in the country.

Oh it totally is anecdotal. And growing up in that region also doesn't give me a lot to compare it to. Pretty much anyone who did their homework either went to Stanford, Berkeley, or UC Davis. The dullards went to a CSU.

Rice generally has the highest academic reputation of any of the schools listed in this thread save Princeton. It is interesting that the academic schools seem to be able to compete in baseball more than other sports.

Baseball normally comes down to 2 things: good pitching and timely hitting. If a team has these, they can flourish come tournament time.

Maybe in the Houston area...but Stanford, UVA and Vandy have reputations that are nationally known. I knew nothing of Rice's "academic reputation," until this thread. UVA's, Vandy's and Stanford's are well known throughout the US however.

Get over your Houston envy. Rice's reputation nationally is impeccable. UVa isn't in the same class even though it is a terrific school. Most folks here in Texas have no idea that UVa is any better than WVU. But in academic circles they know.

Each of those schools garner more attention nationally because they are huge and have generally more competitive athletic departments. I can tell you that almost everyone working in the higher education industry is well aware of Rice University's academic prowess.

Has there ever been an uglier looking baseball team than Vanderbilt. They have a good coach and good players, and play well. But their appearance is terrible, not to mention the ugliest uniforms since the San Diego Padres brown uniforms of years gone by.

What does it say that I grew up in Morgantown, attended literally 100's of events there (athletic and other), received a full scholarship to attend, and STILL I chose to leave the state and attain an education for which I am STILL paying? I'll tell you: it says can never, have never and will never defend the academic reputation of the flagship university of my home state.

I agree the pinstripes are ugly, solid black would be better in their case, no comment on the players.

Biggest problem I had with him was the goofy looking glasses, goggles or what ever they were.

Also, if he's a starter in pro ball, I believe he needs to refine his delivery, or he's going to see the TJ Doctor in a couple years or less.
